@RocBoyzDealer hollow point ammo for a 357 deforms pretty good and will lose its trajectory and velocity pretty good. an ak would really not be a good choice. at close range it will go right thru them cleanly most of the time and whatever walls are behind. its a small sharp pointed projectile traveling over 2300fps, and while it may kill them in the long run by bleeding out, not much stopping power. where a 12 gauge is traveling at half that speed and hitting with much more force.

Whoever (DaEastSideOG?) says that you catch a murder charge for shooting an intruder is way under-knowledged about laws state to state. In Michigan there is a "no retreat" clause which means you are not obligated to try to run/flee in your own home first. I believe I could shoot someone in my house that is presenting a threat to me or my family and it would be legit.
I'd go with the 9mm pistol also. With modern hollowpoint ammo, it will not overpenetrate and have equal stopping power with that .45 cal. That said, it will hold more rounds than the .45, have less recoil, and thus gets its front sight back on target quicker.

I really would like to say thank you for helping me choose for my home defense. I was thinking about getting a 9mm and a shot gun. But i was not sure until i saw your video on this. The video you made did really help allot.
I am a single woman, would you recommend the 500 series or the JIC series for home defense? Is there a big difference besides the JIC being waterproof? As far as handguns I am really ignorant. I own a .25 because is lightweight but I'd prefer something with a bigger punch to it.
45 all the way and if you was really worried about penetration you would load your gun with fragmenting ammo in 45 this would be more then enough to stop a guy dead in their tracks
45 acp is better at stoppage and wont overpenetrate. Perfect for home defense. But that said a 45 thats not on center (spine), in a vital organ, or rupturing a major artery will not stop anyone dead in their tracks. Even in the heart they have a few seconds of life left. Its all about shot placement and that means what you are better at shooting, not about caliber. 9mm hp will expand just fine and might stop inside them if you go light load. Def shotgun ftw! Shoot often!
Cool vid. Disagree on the hand gun part, though. I use a .45 (FN FNP.45), and if you put a hollow point round in the center of someone's chest, it isn't going anywhere past. It'll just expand and pack a much bigger punch than a 9mm. Either way, it's mostly preference.
@MrReverendgreen 9mm-Higher Velocity + 110-140 gr. Bullet=more penetration and less energy transfer on target.
.45 ACP 185-230 gr. @ 900 FPS= Less penetration and greater energy transfer. Also the .45 defeats barriers much better than the .38 and 9mm due to heavy bullet weight.
i like your thoughts on the 9mm as it has a better change of not passing through the body. my only thing is the semi auto can jam up and then you are left high and dry. i have a colt trooper .357 that i use .38 in because i know it will work every time and the target round has a good chance of staying in the person.

You got it all wrong man.. A 9mm has more penetrative power due to its relatively smaller size and higher bullet velocities. Less air friction=higher velocity.. Higher velocity & less friction = more penetration.

@campusgolfchamp No doubt there are other factors contributing to a bullet's penetration abilities. One of which would be mass. However, between the 9mm and the 45, the 9mm tends to win the penetration contest.

The reason why a .45 is so devastating is because it travels slower and once it hits a person it slows down and expands and tumbles inside the body and fucks up everything it touches, and it most likely will stay inside them. A 9mm on the other hand could easily go straight through a person and still go through a thin wall afterward.

It depends on the type of cartridge used as well. if you are using JHP rounds your penetration will be different than FMJ rounds, regardless of caliber, and even then it depends on what you hit, like a torso shot vs. an arm or leg. Do you hit ribs femur, at an angle, sternum, spine? 9mm, .40 or .45 all have different penetration characteristics depending on the load. He should do a little research before he says one is better than another.

Especially if you use hardball ammo in a nine, it will go thru several walls. But, if you use a light weight, lower velocity, hollowpoint 9mm, it will tend to stay in. sorry your wrong. A 9mm travels 30% faster than a 45 and 20% faster than a 40sw. If you don't want to go through drywall after tissue penetration use turkey load on a shotgun. Anything else your going to go through a wall regardless. If you have people in your house you have to very very careful on the trajectory of your fire. Personally I'd go with 40sw Hollow. decent range and the HP will make it spin after tissue penetration reducing its speed and energy transfer.

Im sorry I assumed you had the ATI version because thats the only brand i have seen with that style top folder. Maybe we had different instructions as well. If you try to push the stock down flush to the heat sheild you will see where the area im talking about is. if you looking down your shotgun at your sights it is on the left right in front of the mountind bolt where that peice and the folding part meet. If that makes any damn sense at all. I just ordered the ATI tactical forend to match
Not to be a dick but if you read the instructions on that stock it tells you where to file down about .2mm or something like that so when its folded up it lays flush with your heatsheild or barrel.. Makes it look a little less goofy. I have a mossberg 500 special purpose with same stock. I love it

Great video but for one thing. You said that a 9mm has less chance of overpenetration that a .45 and that's wrong, assuming you were talking about a .45 ACP. The 9mm round is much faster and obviously smaller so it is easier to overpenetrate. The .45 ACP travels much slower and is larger thereby dumping more energy into the target and slowing down much faster. To confirm this, just Google Image search 9mm vs. 45 ballistic gel tests and you will see. Again, great video, small correction.
@lamberts01 if u research heavier bullets penetrate more than lighter bullets so 230 grains of 45 moving at 890 fps is just a slikley if not more likley to over pentrate as a smaller bullet goin 1150 fps alot of really light defensive loads accualy fragment upon inpact what u really dont want is a bullet that fails to mushroom out of any caliber thats why it is important to test ur ammo and know what it will do

Its not always bad to pull the trigger when you know it's not loaded. I dry fire practice often in my house. You just have to triple check its not empty. The two loudest noises you will ever hear is a click instead of a boom, or a boom instead of a click.

If you use specialized personal defense ammo or shot shells the chances are it will stay in them assuming that you hit them or if you miss not penetrate the walls. I would think you be using specialized ammo as using FMJ or ball would be, well ludicrous. Just my 02 cents and worth every penny you paid for it. Keep up the good work.
a .45 actually would have a much higher chance of staying in someones body than a 9mm does, the 9x19 cartridge is known for its over penetration due to the smaller bullet traveling at a higher velocity. a 9mm FMJ will rip through a humans body like butter, wich is part of the reason why its lacking in stopping power. high quality hollow points are a MUST if you use a 9mm for home defense.
i prefer the oldies over these new model guns, because they have been tested and proven reliable over the decades. my choice of a long gun would be a winchester model 1894 lever action (carbine sized pretty much). as a sidearm, i like a model 57 6 inch .41 magnum revolver. just my preference

LIKE OHMR431 SAID the velocity of the 9mm makes the round more likely to cause a through and through than a large slower caliber bullet and bad guys carry shotguns too but theirs are ready to go be careful be prepared
I love the video, but I have to disagree on something you said. If you shoot someone with a larger projectile, the chances of it going through them are really the same at the distances we are talking about. It all comes down to what you prefer, small and fast versus heavy and slow.

Actually a 9mm FMJ has a better chance of going through the body or wall. Larger the caliber, the slower the round, less penatration. I carry a .40 S&w hollow point for the reason of less penatration.
Okay so you were saying when an enemy would hear you hit the pump they would probably run. The thing is...when you are pumping don't you think it's kind of wasting precious seconds? Now for me right now money is no issue because I've been saving up and can keep saving up if needed. What tactical shotgun could you suggest for reliability, easy/fast reload, and light weight? @GT03235 depends on who you ask, and what criteria you go by. If you go by what has sold the most then yes the 870, but if you go by military trials, I think the mossberg/benelli would be the best.

You need real stopping power and since you can get a Springfield .45 ACP for less than $500 that is a clear decision! .45 and an attacker or robber is NOT getting up. I Have a 870 too and racking a shotgun can be a bad thing, it tells people you have very limited shots and tells them where you are!!
a .45acp has less penetrative qualities than a 9m....hence y it is a better round for pentrating body armour...the .45 travels slower and dumps its energy quicker (stops moving faster) which is why its ruthless to get shot with (more tumbling) ...the 9m will penetrate and clear....the .45 using the same kind of bullet will not penetrate as far.

Whoever (DaEastSideOG?) says that you catch a murder charge for shooting an intruder is way under-knowledged about laws state to state. In Michigan there is a "no retreat" clause which means you are not obligated to try to run/flee in your own home first. I believe I could shoot someone in my house that is presenting a threat to me or my family and it would be legit.

I'd go with the 9mm pistol also. With modern hollowpoint ammo, it will not overpenetrate and have equal stopping power with that .45 cal. That said, it will hold more rounds than the .45, have less recoil, and thus gets its front sight back on target quicker.
You fire until your target goes down, the more rounds you bring the better, IMHO.

Right away watching your video i don't like your stock, get rid of it and buy a Knoxx stock , it will really cut your your recoil down to almost nothing. And get rid of the 9mm and get a 45 acp. No No No just because you use a bigger bullet doesn't mean it will go thru them i shoot a 45 acp and my hollow point will not go thru you. 45 acp is better at stoppage and wont overpenetrate. Perfect for home defense. But that said a 45 thats not on center (spine), in a vital organ, or rupturing a major artery will not stop anyone dead in their tracks. Even in the heart they have a few seconds of life left. Its all about shot placement and that means what you are better at shooting, not about caliber. 9mm hp will expand just fine and might stop inside them if you go light load. Def shotgun ftw! Shoot often!

Cool vid. Disagree on the hand gun part, though. I use a .45 (FN FNP.45), and if you put a hollow point round in the center of someone's chest, it isn't going anywhere past. It'll just expand and pack a much bigger punch than a 9mm. Either way, it's mostly preference.

.45 ACP 185-230 gr. @ 900 FPS= Less penetration and greater energy transfer. Also the .45 defeats barriers much better than the .38 and 9mm due to heavy bullet weight.

i like your thoughts on the 9mm as it has a better change of not passing through the body. my only thing is the semi auto can jam up and then you are left high and dry. i have a colt trooper .357 that i use .38 in because i know it will work every time and the target round has a good chance of staying in the person.

You got it all wrong man.. A 9mm has more penetrative power due to its relatively smaller size and higher bullet velocities. Less air friction=higher velocity.. Higher velocity & less friction = more penetration.

The reason why a .45 is so devastating is because it travels slower and once it hits a person it slows down and expands and tumbles inside the body and fucks up everything it touches, and it most likely will stay inside them. A 9mm on the other hand could easily go straight through a person and still go through a thin wall afterward.

It depends on the type of cartridge used as well. if you are using JHP rounds your penetration will be different than FMJ rounds, regardless of caliber, and even then it depends on what you hit, like a torso shot vs. an arm or leg. Do you hit ribs femur, at an angle, sternum, spine? 9mm, .40 or .45 all have different penetration characteristics depending on the load. He should do a little research before he says one is better than another.

sorry your wrong. A 9mm travels 30% faster than a 45 and 20% faster than a 40sw. If you don't want to go through drywall after tissue penetration use turkey load on a shotgun. Anything else your going to go through a wall regardless. If you have people in your house you have to very very careful on the trajectory of your fire. Personally I'd go with 40sw Hollow. decent range and the HP will make it spin after tissue penetration reducing its speed and energy transfer.

Im sorry I assumed you had the ATI version because thats the only brand i have seen with that style top folder. Maybe we had different instructions as well. If you try to push the stock down flush to the heat sheild you will see where the area im talking about is. if you looking down your shotgun at your sights it is on the left right in front of the mountind bolt where that peice and the folding part meet. If that makes any damn sense at all. I just ordered the ATI tactical forend to match

Not to be a dick but if you read the instructions on that stock it tells you where to file down about .2mm or something like that so when its folded up it lays flush with your heatsheild or barrel.. Makes it look a little less goofy. I have a mossberg 500 special purpose with same stock. I love it

Great video but for one thing. You said that a 9mm has less chance of overpenetration that a .45 and that's wrong, assuming you were talking about a .45 ACP. The 9mm round is much faster and obviously smaller so it is easier to overpenetrate. The .45 ACP travels much slower and is larger thereby dumping more energy into the target and slowing down much faster. To confirm this, just Google Image search 9mm vs. 45 ballistic gel tests and you will see. Again, great video, small correction.

well i like the reminton 870, but i love the mossberg 500 and not to argue but your not right about the nine mil being the best home defense. dude talk about over penatration! the nine moves faster and most likely wont stay in the body, it over penatrates!!!!!! however the 40 and 45 are slower moving and will not over penatrate.! thats the reason 40s and 45s have more knock down power.b/c they dont go straight through they pretty much stay in the body and create an overwhelming shock!!!!!!!!!!

If you use specialized personal defense ammo or shot shells the chances are it will stay in them assuming that you hit them or if you miss not penetrate the walls. I would think you be using specialized ammo as using FMJ or ball would be, well ludicrous. Just my 02 cents and worth every penny you paid for it. Keep up the good work.

a .45 actually would have a much higher chance of staying in someones body than a 9mm does, the 9x19 cartridge is known for its over penetration due to the smaller bullet traveling at a higher velocity. a 9mm FMJ will rip through a humans body like butter, wich is part of the reason why its lacking in stopping power. high quality hollow points are a MUST if you use a 9mm for home defense.

i prefer the oldies over these new model guns, because they have been tested and proven reliable over the decades. my choice of a long gun would be a winchester model 1894 lever action (carbine sized pretty much). as a sidearm, i like a model 57 6 inch .41 magnum revolver. just my preference

I love the video, but I have to disagree on something you said. If you shoot someone with a larger projectile, the chances of it going through them are really the same at the distances we are talking about. It all comes down to what you prefer, small and fast versus heavy and slow.
I prefer if I had my choice, heavy and slow, but thats just my opinion.

I use a pre-ban Glock 17 that I bought new in 1993. Still perfect gun in my opinion. For home defense I use Federal Hydra-Shok 124 gr JHP.
If I shoot at an intruder they will be dead as I intend.

Great video! A good friend of mine was a Police Officer for 30 yrs. Pulled his side arm hundreds of times but never filed. He carried the same 1911 .45 his entire career. When offered one of the department's new Glock 22 .40's he declined; said the sound of that old 1911 hammer being pulled slowly back until locked worked every time. 99% of criminals are cowards.

@addecross - YES that is exactly what happens where I live in Arizona! The rest of the states in our great country also live under the threat of home invasion and burgulary. Arizona is compounded by the existance of 400,000 to 1,000,000 ilegal aliens, most Latino (also most very good people). The Phoenix Metro area has the highest Kidnapping rate in the USA second only in the world to Mexico City.!

Actually a 9mm FMJ has a better chance of going through the body or wall. Larger the caliber, the slower the round, less penatration. I carry a .40 S&w hollow point for the reason of less penatration.

Okay so you were saying when an enemy would hear you hit the pump they would probably run. The thing is...when you are pumping don't you think it's kind of wasting precious seconds? Now for me right now money is no issue because I've been saving up and can keep saving up if needed. What tactical shotgun could you suggest for reliability, easy/fast reload, and light weight? When I do end up getting a new shotgun I'm going to want it to be very very good.

@GT03235 depends on who you ask, and what criteria you go by. If you go by what has sold the most then yes the 870, but if you go by military trials, I think the mossberg/benelli would be the best.

@Robxkill If money is no object Benelli makes excellent semi auto 12 Ga tactical shotguns for example: M4 TACTICAL 12-GAUGE 2-3/4" AND 3 Price- $1799.00 Overall Length- 40" Weight- 7.8 pounds. If you want an age old proven system, the Mossberg 500 Tactical /Persuader would be a good choice for $350 - $500. If you want versatility, the Remington model 887 Nitro Mag Tactical will accept any 12 Ga round you can find for $498.

@Robxkill it doesnt waste seconds, i can rack a slide on a shotgun in less than half a second. and the fear factor indused to the attacker is well worth the time

@Robxkill Mossberg 590 is the only shotgun that has passed the testing that the Marines put it through. Not saying that the Remmy isn't great, it is. But what is good enough for the Marines is good enough for me.

I dont understand ive watched a few home defense videos now..and i cant get it..i live in Sweden..and noo1 have guns here "well i know its not legal here" but anyway..i mean it seems like all of you guys that live in a country where weapons are legal ..

I'd have to disagree with the 9mm, but otherwise this is a great video! a .45 shouldn't pass through a person's body It is a larger and slower round. Personally, I'm drawn to the .357 sig as it creates a more ftlbf than a 9mm and generally incapcitaties a person quicker than a .45, but reguardless of the pistol you use, Hollowpoint ammo is a must for home defense! (Not everyone can buy jhp legally but if you can Get it!). Noone can argue with a shotgun!!!!

Nice video but a 9mm is not good for Home defense in my state! People that break in are all hopped up on drugs and a 9mm would just make them laugh. You need real stopping power and since you can get a Springfield .45 ACP for less than $500 that is a clear decision! .45 and an attacker or robber is NOT getting up. I Have a 870 too and racking a shotgun can be a bad thing, it tells people you have very limited shots and tells them where you are!!

a .45acp has less penetrative qualities than a 9m....hence y it is a better round for pentrating body armour...the .45 travels slower and dumps its energy quicker (stops moving faster) which is why its ruthless to get shot with (more tumbling) ...the 9m will penetrate and clear....the .45 using the same kind of bullet will not penetrate as far.
