  • This guy is a fucking genius... According to him. It just hit him one day when he was doing stuff... And he drew it free handed... Please PLEASE patent this design

  • My brain hurts D: Has DARPA tried to recruit you yet? O_O

I would LOVE a full sized OCTO-TANK to conquest my local neighborhood with :3

I say you use titanium, power it with a nuclear core, and scale it up and give it real rockets. I'd buy one....

  • Jaimie!!!!Where can i get one of these!!!This is so brilliant!!!

  • Jaimie, I'd just like to say, as someone who's done architectural drafting on an amateur level as a hobby, if those schematics are drawn freehand, they are really impressive. I especially like the one at 1:00. (also the spider bot is pretty awesome) Just as you said the spider bot is the toy we all wish we could have as a kid, I kinda think you're a little bit of the person we all wished we could grow up to be when we were kids. Keep up the good work! :)

  • The mechanics is brilliant, pretty awesome to let only one engine drive the legs

  • jme rocks

  • Awesome design! I'm totally building 5 of these to patrol my yard as part of my future security system. Keep up the good work!

  • Could you please put more drawings of L2B and C1? May be 3 diedric views?

  • Did you patent this? =)

I'm going to try to recreate this in a sandbox game called garry's mod. I'm most likely going to fail miserably, but wish me luck! :D

  • good memories of J1

  • I was wondering what company you are selling this to or where I should look to find the manufactured version that will be sold :P Thanks!

  • Wow, it works different to how i imagined....

  • Yeah, Radio Shack has the same remote control toy:

look up HEXBUG Spider (which is also trademarked), on their website, seems to be the same design, what ever isn't the same can be easily improved.

  • Jamie did you learn to do this at school or did you just pick this stuff up cuz this is incredible man.

  • Wahh... I watched your videos, and thought that, maybe sometime, I'd make something similar... shame on me for thinking it was that simple :)Though it's nice to know, that even a toy has to have a serious side to it :)

Did you ever run your designs through "TFlex" or something similar?

  • @Romashk Nope. I uhh... dont' even know what Tflex is. I generally just use my brain space. :-)

  • @JMEMantzel Hmm... It's a program some engineers use to analyze their designs(structural integrity, motion, heat etc.) Seeing as you started doing some 3d modeling I was curious to know if you broached this subject...

  • Re: The HexBug Spider works just the same

Looks like the chinese are at it again. Why has the inventor NOT received any money from the manufacturers of the HexBug?

Oh well no one is safe, even if you get a Patent granted, a copy will always come out of China in no time!

    It's a dying shame!

  • I don't think I'll understand until I take one apart, so if ever I have the opportunity, I'll buy two.

  • Hot damn, thanks for posting. Very intresting.

  • my head is exploding jaimie, why would you want to kill 80% of your viewers!?

    noooooo Arrrghgghhahhhhhhhhhhhh *kasploosh*

  • @urchin34 wait, what? ohhh..... ha ha. For a second, I was trying to remember when I said I wanted to kill anyone. ha ha. Derr..... you mean because the brains exploding... :-P

  • Heh. I don't understand what this is saying. Looks like i'm not cut out to be an engineer..

  • It all makes sense now. It seems the J2s (for both A and B type legs) are a definite weak point though. What sort of mechanical gains are there with the main horizontal pieces (L2s) i.e. what is the ratio of the pivot distances?

Also it looks like L4B could be replaced with a double ended ball/socket for simplicity.

Awesome stuff! Thanks for posting the detailed description. ;)

  • @NoodleNog The L4's help keep the ends of the legs vertical. Thats why they're like they are. Ball and socket could be used, but would sacrifice a bit of stability.

The "J" pieces are actually pretty strong. They're so small that they have very little leverage against them. They've never broken on me.

Hmm.... proportions. I knew that would come up. ha ha. I'm planning on dimensioning the drawings when I get some time.

  • amazing how it changes direction

  • This is cool. It'd be nice with B.E.A.M technology mostly photo vore technology, look up: Photo vore robot, Mark Tilden or B.E.A.M robots. here on you tube, basically this robot can be made to follow light. (hence the latin Photo Vore; light eater)

  • This thing looks awesome! So smooth and fluid. The directional changes are particularly impressive.

  • I can't decide what is more impresive. The mechanism or those drawings. Amazing work!

  • Aha! As I thought! I never managed to see the C1 piece in your videos of the giant robot though. Was starting to doubt myself....

  • AAAH TOO MUCH INFO!

    You're awesome for posting this.

  • You should sell kits on your site. seriously.

  • Woooow, this is amazing! I was totally curious about the mech!

  • I wouldn't post those someone in China will copy them

  • @LivingHistorySchool too late. patent or not they will copy them.

  • looks complicated...

  • Awesome.

  • SO ZATS HOW IT VURKS!

do you have any idea on attaching ze RAY GUN!?

MY PLANS FOR VURLD DOMINATION ARE ALMOST COMPLETE! AHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAH!

  • Sir, you are a genius.

  • @JMEMantzel - have you considered KickStarter to help you with funding?

  • I am glad you have your patent drawings completed and (presumably) submitted. I think that this is such an ingenious walking mechanism with only two motors. Kudo to you. Since I saw it the first time, I have had an item on my to-do list that literally said "figure out jamius robot kinematics," so this will make it much easier. I couldn't figure it out from your previous images and videos.

  • wow

so this is how it works,

    supergreatmadscience job :)

ps can it be faster than this?

(ultra fast like real spiders? XD

ps2 it looks like useful project for nanotechnology, still humankind too young ;p hehe

  • I shall build one as a late Christmas gift.... to myself.

  • Ah! Now i understand everything!

  • Replies used to be nested, now they aren't. Stupid Youtube screw up again!

  • I really wanted to learn how it works and now... I am still clueless :)

probably just beyond me though so I'm not complaining... it's an amazing machine... it never has to turn around and that's deep.

  • when can we pre-order one?... when is the company saying it's going to be out?

  • Steal it, disassemble and eat it so you become more like jamie!

  • cooolt!

  • Very cool! How did you create the original working model?

Keep up the great work. I look forward to your posts to see what cool projects you take on. You embody the true ingenuity of man.

  • I can't wait to order a few of these for all the kids I know, and one for myself.

  • @JMEMantzel What if these fell in the wrong hands!!!!!

  • It makes more sense now, but I'm still struggling with it.

Really I would need one in my hands - or better yet - a giant one above me so I can slowly wind the mechanism and see what's happening

  • Very sophisticated invention, great! And also great that you've patented it, so that noone can just steal the idea and say it's his. Can't wait to see the final version of the toy/

  • YAY for patents!

  • I'm gonna buy one, pull it apart and put all the bits in one of my boxes of stuff. That way I gain all it's power :3

  • Yay OMG now I can try making it outa legos! thanks!

  • Bloody brilliant! I take it you created this in your mind then built it just for fun. Now I'm going to be up all night working this out in my head, I feel a headache coming on. Your drawings are excellent, sharp and clear. As good or better than most that are professionally crafted.

Look into Makerbot.com and reprap.org. Both are open source 3D printer systems with good user bases. Either one can be built using your own stuff.

  • Oh no, Jaimie's computer got hacked.

  • WOW, it's hard to understand unless i can see it all in person and watch it work.

  • Now, why the heck can't i make this video a reply to the 1st spider tank video. atgh. Youtube keeps changing things. ....might be my old browser.

  • @JMEMantzel The owner of that video must accept your video response to make it show.

  • neat

  • I'm keeping a close eye on 3d printing. When I feel it's right to make my first one I'd love to make this my first project.

  • @bugilt ohh... I'm planning on getting a 3D printer.... any recommandations? What have you been looking at? ....or what do you have.... or.... what......

  • @JMEMantzel Reprap, cupcake, fab@home, ect.... I haven't built one yet, but I like the RepRap. I've just been watching the development of each.

  • @JMEMantzel Check out a makerbot... they are pretty inexpensive..

  • @JMEMantzel the thing-o-matic 3d printer seems to be the best DIY 3d printer right now. Printed objects just need minor sanding to get a smooth texture. uPrint is the most affordable production printer, insane quality printing but starts at around $14K.

  • @JMEMantzel For a 3D printer, you might want to look into the RepRap project at reprap.org. It an open-source DIY project and as far as I have seen, the material costs are not very high. Also, they focus on making it able to reproduce itself and even have the files needed to reproduce its own components available for free...

Btw. I love your robot, keep up the good work!

  • @JMEMantzel We built a mendel reprap at my local hackerspace. Works mighty fine, and was good fun to put together. We got the printed parts posted to us from Adrian Boyer and co in the UK, who're the reprap bossmen. We bought all the bits and bobs locally. Nowdays you can buy all the bits and bobs from one website, but it ain't cheap once you factor in postage to Australia. :(

  • @JMEMantzel Hey, Jamie! Long-time fan and admirer here. Seeing your knack for DIY-projects, maybe you should look into the RepRap project. It's an open-source self-replicating 3d printer project with great potential to be improved and extended by anyone. Hope this helps, keep up the good work! :)

  • @oinasz Forgot the link: reprap.org/wiki/Main_Page

  • @JMEMantzel You have a few options that are "reasonable":

    RepRap

    Makerbot

    Fab@home

google for "onshoulders mendel" and separately for "makezine giant reprap" to get see some awesome real life applicaitons. I cannot wait to see what you create with one of these!

  • @JMEMantzel The "Makerbot" seems pretty interesting. Also other printers in the RepRap project. You do have to put them together yourself... but I'm sure you couild manage :D

  • amazing as always dude.

and not how i thought it was done.

    always good to be impressed

  • thats sweet bro.

  • WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!

  • So magic. Got it.

  • well if your chinese piraters had any doubts on how to steal your spider robot, hopefully this will help them perfect it...

Isn't this top secret stuff? lol

  • @WizzleThump Well.... these are the patent drawings.... so.....

  • @JMEMantzel I'm curious what would have come after "...so..."

  • @JMEMantzel Patents won't stop everybody, it's like a door lock, they just keep honest people honest. But as you probably know a big trick is figuring out all the minor manufacturing details, so that it runs right reliably, and only you have the original intuition and experience with this device to help your manufacturing guys do that. That and the spirit of awesomeness you can bring to the design and, I assume, some of the packaging/marketing stuff too?

  • You're amazing and an inspiration to aspiring inventors everywhere, please never stop :D

  • first to coment and awsaum hope it gose well!

  • @fireblaserman No one cares about your first comments.

  • @Ashanmaril

    'Specially if they can't spell.

  • @jamesx6x I know. "Awsaum"?

  • @Ashanmaril Inturnette peeul argh thugh bhesst.

  • @fireblaserman Wow. Way to double-post. Either way, use proper sentence structure, and learn to spell.

  • @Ashanmaril I care enough to hate them.

  • @TheGreatSteve Makes sense.
