Gear box is for adjusting wheels' torque-RPM for road condition providing constant power input in the most efficient for processes rate of an engine, regardless it is ICE, or steam, or electric-motor or muscles. It means, torque times RPM on engine site (or crank shaft) must be constant. Changing the arm violate this, so the "invention" is B.S. both physically and technically.
Dear "inventors", get fundamental education in science before bothering selves and others, with your "discoveries".
holy cow, you mean you came up with an idea for your self!!!!! wait maybe i should look it up first, after all all "your other ideas" have been inventions that are over 100 years old. oh what the hell i wont bother and just say nice job if you did really think it up your self
running a high tensil spring inside would cause it to become a tourk agustible system ie the more weight aplyed the more extension given les weight less extention
@jason4amd i think that idea would be good. but at the top of the peddle stroke you would be pressing down on the spring so it wouldn't start be extended untill u got past the first 90.
Don't spend time/money inventing stuff unless you really understand the thing you are trying to improve. This invention will alter the knee position. If you have your bike set up correctly, your knee will be in the ideal position, but if you shift gears with this invention, your knee position is no longer correct. Lots of people think all cyclists have to is "get on a bike and pedal like mad". Later, they wonder why their knees are hurting and they learn about cycling ergonomics.
@mengu1988 . Sounds like a hassle for my part, long distance biking with heavy stuff! I wouldnt want to stop and change my seat everytime. With the bad positions, my back and knees would bust!!
The amount of time required to "shift" gears, and the mechanism by which you do so is vastly inferior to even the lowest end of 3 speed crank and derailleur systems. It is also probably heavier, and does not allow for ease of use in "clipless" pedal systems. Bad invention.
only thing i want to know it when its on long length how does it lock so you can put all your weight on it? but then what stops it from changing from short length to long length when you put pressure on the pedals
We should be using jet paks by now, or at least be transmuted into beings of pure thought and energy, thus moving at will and without the encumbrance of our present meat sacks.
i saw all your "BIKE GEAR" inventions... im a downhill biker, jumper, xcountry biker, men ive been riding bike for more than 15 years now. and all i can say is,
QUIT the "BIKE" invention shit and try to invent something else... long length for torque, short length for speed= long days of sore muscles and short length of life..
The only improvement I can see is a mechanical apparatus that will permit a change in crank length from a handlebar mounted control. Never ceases to amaze me the things some people can visualize and actually build. Well done.
it doesnt matter about the size of the crank stupid ass its the matter of the size of the sprocket dipshit the smaller the sprocket the faster u pedal (speed) and the bigger the sprocket the more and harder you have to pedal (torque) just like on a mountain bike duh!!!!
@WICKEDREGRETSgaming dont get a hard dick bud. the equation for torque is radius multiplied by force. This invention increases radius thus increasing torque.
the fact that you have to change each side independantly makes this ass! imagine trying this while you are in the forest up and down trails, this would just Not wk, NOT SIMPLE AT ALL .
Its better to train your muscles at a particular pedal length that matches your body and riding style.Making your muscles work more efficiently and you & your bike go faster. I'm a physiotherapist and we studied this(varying torque arms and its effect on the body) in Kinesiology class. Its use would be best for rental bikes with people of varying sizes using the same bike. But hey dont stop, continue inventing.Go Pinoys!!!
Nice concept but shifting gears is different from changing the torque arm.changing the pedal arm length changes the way your leg power translates into torque. What is does is give you 2 cranksets or crank arms in one.1 for very fast spinning/low torque and the other slower spinning but greater torque but if you match this to a ten speed system it is still a ten speed system. and not twenty as you said.
really james, then what is the difference between a monocoque frames and multi piece frames. what is the major difference between the new shimano di2, ultegra sl ultegra and shimano dura ace 7900? Oh and here's the clincher, how do you adjust a derailleur, (hint: it involves limit screws). What exactly don't mechanics know? Remember assuming mechanics don't know anything makes an ass out of you and me. How many years of experience on bike work, not riding them and thinking you know how they work
I'm a bike mechanic and this is stupid. Great in concept, but if you've done any fit training, you can see that it's gonna kill your knees and that it is a waste of weight. I have an amazing Idea, get a ten speed or a single speed or any where in between, easier maintenance and you don't kill your knees. oh and the bikes name says it all TABAG (as in t-bag design). way to go sarah palin
Most bike mechanics I have met have been a dissapointment in their lack of mechanical know how. Not saying this is a good idea but I like the creativity this guy displays.

@mengu1988 "you also need to adjust your bike's seat height. otherwise you'll lose ideal pedalling position"
No Mengu, you're wrong. - All you need is to adjust the same mechanism on your legs. simple.

good job you invented longer bike pedals

Erm, the cadence needed to go at a given speed is the same... which kinda defeats the point of having gears.

To me, this just looks like a way to increase your chances of running your pedals on a curb or simply having them snap off.

Why not just have the pedal retract using a spring or hydraulic mechanism?
It looks like you contract the pedal length at the top of the stroke and extend at the bottom of the stroke.

kijhed 1 year ago
do not change the gearing but shorter crank help for faster pedaling and longuer (by lever effect) give more torque
nice idea but i dont think professional bikers will buy this its probably too heavy and too soft or not durable (compared to a normal crankset)

you should add a way to move the bottom bracket up and down to make the bottom of the stroke end at the same height in either mode.
