  • Personally, I find his performance of the candenza far better than horowitz and argerich. Not sure if those are even considered the best specifically for the rach3 cadenza....

  • Cette oeuvre c'est une guerre mythologique selon moi :

    0:00 prélude de guerre

    0:08 début de guerre

    0:33 démoniaque

    0:48 apocalyptique

    1:09 héroïque

    1:40 interlude

1:51 fin du combat et essouflement

    2:09 espoir

    2:39 mystère

  • You're pretty darn good for an amateur!

  • UPLOAD a better quality version please. this is 2011 not 1987

  • can i get the proper audio of the whole concerto anywhere? i just listened to it on your site but it has some weird clicking noises in the background. apart from that it might be my favorite rendition :D

  • Chiaki-chan!!!!

  • Amazing! sounds like Bronfman's

  • Amazing playing....the best version I've ever heard of the ossia cadenza. It holds together and has shape...not sounding like a thick mass of notes. Bravo.

  • such nimble fingers I have not seen.

  • Lang Lang's Rach3 cadenza is very impressive.

  • It looks like a scene out of a movie like Shine. Well played. Spectacular cinematography.

  • Wonderfully played OMG!!!

  • Awesome performance. Thanks for sharing. I think you may also enjoy Gutierrez's cadenza. One of my favorites.

  • @surirach I agree with you on that!

  • Why this man is working like periodontist yet???? OMG

  • Fantastic :)

  • Prefer Leif, it's more fluid and still with even more incredible raw power... This is just too much humpapa for me =/

  • The lighting is perfect.

  • you are no amateur.

  • I really find your "amateurism" awsome

  • WOW Thomas Yu!!!! Awesome. I'm an MD and have done the Rach 2nd but I sucked as I didn't have enough time to really practice due to the "practice". Did you take time off to prepare for this monstrous piece? Totally awesome.

  • Amateur pianist? Goodness, this is amazing!!!!! Technically sound and full of expression, this is one of the best performances of the Rach 3 on YouTube. Played better than most professionals...

  • what exactly are you calling amateur pianist? Do amateur pianists play Rachmaninov 3? I wonder what does it leave for professionals.

  • Exceptional, fantastic. But sir your left leg is placed extremely unprofessionaly. In the Chopin Competition you wouldn't even be CONSIDERED for a 3rd place with that leg placement.

  • @TheCriticPiano i use my left leg for pedal, is that a problem?

  • @TheCriticPiano

Who cares about the leg when the interpretation shows so much passion...

  • YOU, sir, are absolutely no amateur. You may have played parts of the cadenza a bit slow for my taste, but your control is still phenomenal.... you should hear some pianists who call themselves "professionals", they can barely even hit the notes from rushing, and when they do it's harsh and unrefined. Your playing is simply exquisite and emotional. You absolutely don't deserve those 16 dislikes.

  • @UsernameHerpDerp yea daft putting amateur in the title,i bet he practiced just ashard as proffs,

  • Most of me prefers the original cadenza to this piece, but there's still some tiny, visceral part of my brain that still can't get over the fact that this one is unbelievably cool.

  • @BenMcCormack91 I thought the ossia was the original. But Rachmaninoff composed another cadenza (which became the main one instead) so it would make more sense musically...

  • @MertezAad Maybe. Either way, I prefer the one that wasn't played in this video, personally.

  • It quite funny the observation that the panist is a periodontist. Why would that be relevant for viewing the video? By the way, nice performance.

  • @felipilloo1984 Perhaps, but have you ever seen such a nice, clean, white set of keys?

  • This is outstanding.

  • simply gorgeous, doc. well done!! bravo!!

  • This is really brilliant, well done.

  • lol. flutist came in a beat late at the end.

  • I am a professional pianist, and I am stunned at your virtuosity, Dr. Yu. Bravissimo! You can clean my teeth anytime (i might need a new trip to the dentist!!!!) Magnificently played!

  • You know, this makes me want to invest in a 7/8 size piano so I have a chance at playing Rachmaninov....curse my small hands.

  • @MissCoxMusic

I have small hands too, but the cadenza part is playable with them and I can only stretch about one octave

  • Can someone tell me which part of the first movement does it appear?

  • @Laudan08 Towards the end, about 10 or 11 minutes in

  • Awesome!!!

  • Thumbs up if you think this guy is incredible

  • @foshizmaniz21 Why would we give you thumbs up if we could just give a nice thumbs-up to the video itself?

  • @headcheeez because you touch yourself at night!

  • i personally love the ashkenazy's interpretation of this cadenza. but damn, not bad at all!

  • Loved listening to and watching your version, thank you for posting, I hope you achieve the greatness you deserve.

  • Amateur? Seriously? You are incredible!

By the way, thanks for choosing this cadenza over the other one. ;)

  • I know electric guitars, drums, and synthesizers have pretty much taken over modern music, which is fine. i guess. They do have a valid appeal and provide very accessible, enjoyable music, but no instrument can come close to the emotional complexity and depth of the piano. I think this cadenza is a perfect example of that.

  • @signinname41 You've got that right.

  • @signinname41 - The violin can.

  • Some doctors/dentists are absolutely insane! They are all so talented but because of what they have to face in reality (loan repayment, children tuition fees) they keep music as a hobby. I'm a medical student and I LOVE and ADORE classical music. Although not as good as him, I play piano too!

  • This cadenza always gives me chills. Most of the time I forget it's just a piano playing. Great playing for a so-called amateur :) I guess that makes me a beginner now!

  • ...

I must play this before I die! God Dammit I WILL!

  • @Symmetryful I am an amateur with no finger talent at all. I spent some yerars to learn this f...n difficult concerto and I am happy with it now. Just start, have a crazy determination to succeed. and you will!

  • I could use some periodontal work, but instead of working on the websites I'm supposed to be building in order to afford my oral repairs, I listen to this recording over and over. Dr. Yu, leave dentistry and play fulltime. You only have one life to live. Give us more of you!

  • Some missed notes, but it doesn't matter because it was played from the heart. Played "like there's no tomorrow". Very convincing. I enjoyed this very much. Thanks a lot.

  • 2:10

  • Fantastic. Dr. Yu, if you can afford it, please leave medicine and devote yourself to the piano fulltime.

  • amateur? don't you think the tittle would be too low profile for someone who play Rach 3??

  • This is a lifetime accomplishment for any pianist

  • Amateur?!! Shit!!

  • this is brilliant!

  • playing the Rach 3 is equivalent to shoveling 9 tons of coal.

  • @Ravel87 Yeah, but think about how warm you'll be after you get all that coal into the furnace.

  • damn good. periodontology is not bad, but your true vocation is music. The melody is there and it sings. Thank you for doing something truly inspiring, Thomas. I have great admiration for you, and your interpretation is more Russian than many a 'professional' pianist's By the way... it's a bit modest on your part to call yourself an 'amateur' pianist.

  • btw thomas, can u tell us viewers your hand span

    mine is 10

grrr Rachmaninov made this cadenza for his big hands

  • Comment removed

  • I have never heard such an amazing interpretation of this Cadenza. Everyone just plays it much too fast for my taste; it kills a lot of the power in this part for me. But that's just me.... Rachmaninoff is beyond genius.

  • the background is a picture

  • I thought so too, but if you check the complete concerto I think you will find it's actually a live audience.

  • omg... Awesome

  • Brilliant.

  • could have been a pro!

    very well played!

  • Amazing.

  • One of the hardest cadenzas ever perpetrated in Music.

  • Prokofiev piano concerto 2 mov.1 cadenza I think is universally known as the hardest ever

  • Very good playing.

  • This is above an expert level in my opinion.

You have such a conceptualised interpretation of Rachmaninov; it's beyond me!

This is an absolute carnage of a Cadenza, and I f*cking love it!

  • I don't get you.

You're like a person who just finished college to open a grocery-store.

    Know what I mean?

  • No, I don't understand what you're trying to say.

  • Well, at first, you talk like this.

den u like totally talk like dizzsz lolz ffs

  • Oh I understand; the profanity?

    Yeah, I'm kinda strange :P

  • Hehe.

  • Hi Thomas! You are playing the fuller version of the cadenza that's why it sounds different than what some of the people on here are used to, right? I think that's why they assume mistakes, but they need to recognize the skill!

It's fantastic!! Hope to see one of your concerts one day.!

  • Wow, I've listened so many versions of the candeza and I can say this is among my favorite ones!!! My compliments!!!! I love it!

  • Thank you so much for taking the tempo you did at 1:15!!!!! Everyone else is either too fast and sloppy and makes no sense, or too slow and lacks excitement. YES!

  • Nicely played :)

  • how can you be called amateur

  • he's not.

  • You have inspired me, truly a David and goliath story, u played it flawless, sheer brilliance and youre an amateur pianist. I personally want to be like u when i am older. I want to be a doctor and be able to play the rach 3 part time lol. How long have u been playing n what sort of practice hours do u put in, what has your training been like. Ehmm what else do u have in your repertoire - is it mostly romantic or contemporary for example

  • the rach 3 , is a monster, one hand chasng after ther other

  • exelent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Rachmaninov, what a badass! Such a powerful cadenza!

  • LOVE THIS.

  • ahh..this video never gets old..its just..so beautiful..T_T

  • I love this performance. It is a very close second to Evgeny Kissin's in my opinion.

  • Thanks for your comment, but I am no Kissin. I really like his version, next to Bronfman. He doesn't blast through it like most others.

  • @thy306 Thomas. I'll make you a question that is very important for me. I'm 16 years old and I like music like if the music is inside me, like great and flaming fire. But I want (and I like very much too) to study Medicine and my parents want that I study medicine too. So, what can I do? Becaouse I see that you're Periodontist (a very diffucult job) and you play Rach 3 in concerts. Please tell me what shoulg I do!

  • @MisterAlbertoPiano When you are not practicing medicine, practice music. When you are not practicing music, practice medicine.

  • @MisterAlbertoPiano Lately I have come to think music, great music is what sets us apart as human beings, the great concertos and symphonies are where we get to, almost, touch the gods. But it's just as good to be a doctor who is also a good pianist. Playing music because it is your love rather than because it's your job is not a second prize. On the day you have to make a choice you will know what you need to do.

  • @parsifal3142 Thanks for this comment. It opened me the ''key'' door. Thanks!

  • @thy306 This is real Everest, Three Gorges, superhuman stuff. Your playing is very inspiring. Just got the score onto the computer so may now give it a go too!

  • @thy306 Yeah, Bronfman's recordings of Rach 2 &3 are possibly some of my favorite recordings of all time. Boy does he get Rachmaninoff.

  • @thy306 did You listen to the horovitz version? its like a way better than the others in my opinion..

  • @mwakin22 Listen to Van Cliburn.

  • he plays it exactly like it should be.

  • this is very good..

i recomend for you rach 3 cadanze from Idil Biret

    listen one time..

    it is different..

  • need a better camera this guy plays really good

  • He plays really well

    (and he looks good too!)

  • Just plain awesome, and from SASK too! Whoo!!

  • Boys play video games. Men play Rach 3.

  • or go into psychosis

  • to pianopianoman:

    Damn right they do.

  • @pianopianoman kissin is a boy playing Rach 3

  • You sir, are an idiot.

Rachmaninoff did not write this just to 'advance skill level'

Listen to the heart in the piece then GTFO.

  • Unlike Rach 3, video games get boring after a few hours.

  • 2:40 is just heaven.

  • por fin un pianista que lo toca al tempo que debe ser... hay quien se cree que por tocarlo más rápido esmás bonito o mejor, pero no, a este tempo se saborea toda la expresión.

  • wonderful cadenza!

  • i respect pianists who take their time and don't rush, like this pianist

  • I love it when pianists play the cadenza slow, specifically the part with the huge chords.

  • Me too. There are too many pianists who want to play the cadenza like a technical exercise or just to show off. Those renditions leave me with no emotion whatsoever. This is a wonderful tempo.

  • from 1:15 is the most bieutiful part

  • Beautiful. And performed at the Sorbonne too. Love it!

  • So beautiful!

  • Yeah, and I'm an amateur neurosurgeon. I like to dabble in quantum physics when I get bored.

You make me sick! (with envy)

  • oh its so hard for him

  • Bravo ! I love this cadenza. I haven't heard too many amateurs who can play this, but yours is wonderful. I'd love to try it but I have some injury issues in my wrist and it likely wouldn't stand up to the kind of stress this piece demands. Thanks for sharing !

  • Where I can find this sheet?

    Tell me please!!!

  • i can give you the whole concerto if u want..

  • Ok ;)

  • just give me your e-mail dude.. xD

    im serious, :)

  • I've heard faster performances of this, but [your] performance is one of the best that i have heard due to the full amount of character you give the piece... well done :)

  • its in a film, but its not taken from it.

  • I love this song! 1:01 - 1:40 is so Godly

  • This is NOT a "song". It's called a concerto!

  • hardly funny, get a life.

  • I have one.

Thanks for the advice anyhow =)

  • One of the most dificult partiture that exists!!

  • Congratulations, Mr Yu. A really beautiful rendition, a really MEANINGFUL rendition. I bet there is music playing inside your head ALL the time... perhaps even in your dreams. You are an inspiration to those of us who live and breath music, yet must devote our working hours to other endeavours... No matter how big the sacrifices you've made (and I'm sure you have made plenty), do realize they're worth it...! Thank you for being an inspiration to other Rachmaninov lovers.

  • I'm in the same situation that Thomas Yu. I write this comment not to minimize his achievement, but believe me when I say that practicing long hours at the piano does not feel like a sacrifice. He does it because it's the most meaningful and rewarding thing he can do. When you have such a powerful drive that rises from within, it's easier to throw yourself at it than to resist, and it does not feel like work, not like most people think as being "work".

    And it's true, it's inspiring.

  • amazing

  • i like the tempo, but i think he hits the crescendo so early on it couldn't maintain it's strength at the end.

  • sorry site

  • You don't mess about do ya, incredible performance of the rach 3 in fact i enjoyed yours as much as i enjoyed horowitz bravo wanna sort your sight out though had a hard time finding the full performance.

  • SIQ!

  • strike that. its not possible to make this look easy. but still, bravo

  • it may just be because im one of those fat ugly guys paperMeat spoke of, but when i play/practice (im not good enough to actually play this for real) this piece (or at least the cadenza) i get real sweaty and shit. its like playing a game of hockey (I used to do that so i can make the analogy). but if its not just me, then congratulations to this guy for playing this part so heroically and making it look easy.

  • lol

  • i dont think anybody can play this without breaking a sweat. btw in a big fan of shine.

great movie, thought i might add that.

  • oh yeah and i dont think i could be playing the wind part thing right after this cadenza

because my mouth wouldnt be able to close and i would miss my mark lol. i bet rachmaninov could of killed sombody if he played a huge chord. i know i would die x_x

  • bravissimo

  • he's pretty good looking.

beats all those fat ugly guys who play this sort of stuff.

oh and yes he also played good aswell.

  • did he olny play the cadenza ? lol

  • This has got to be one of the best interpretations of the Rach 3 Cadenza Ossia on Youtube

  • Check out Ashkenazy's. I posted it.

  • you serious? Andre Watt's hybrid ossia is so much better than this. This isn't bad though.

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you for believing me fongpayman123!

  • I'm 11 and I tried this. Impossible. By hands were way too small...

  • virtuosomusician,

First, I should ask you why your YouTube profile says that you're 41?

Second, you prolly never played past a couple notes in the Rach 3. You never played the cadenza. Stop lying.

God, I hate people who go on these youtube vids of people who can actually play the piece and then claim that they can play it when they're actually only a 40 year-old fanboy trying to live out his or her dream of something they couldn't accomplish as a kid.

  • Well BizzyWho, I said I TRIED, I repeat, TRIED to play it. I never said anything about accomplishing it. And anyway, I played the toccata version of the cadenza, played only the right hand, and only the top note. I played about 6 measures, then gave up. And also, I am 11. Thousands of 12 year olds on YouTube say on their profile that their at least 20-70 years old. I'm not a fanboy. I have been playing violin for 2 years, and piano for 6 years. Suzuki book 6, piano level 9/13

  • @virtuoso: There aren't any big chords that require large hands in the first 6 measures of the toccata version.

  • umm, people sometimes LIE in their profiles lol

  • theres actually two cadenzas in this piece. the first, which he just played is very fun and beautiful to play and listen to. and the second is a page after this one, so i just consider it all one cadenza. anyways..thats another good interpretation ive heard.

  • Got to give the camera man some props!

  • is this ossia cadenza harder than the other, more silvery one that Rachmaninov wrote?

  • Yea probably. I've never played either but the sheet music for the ossia looks more difficult and has a broader techincal range.

  • This is technically the more difficult of the two. I read somewhere that Rachmaninoff actually wrote this cadenza first. But the first published edition of this concerto contained the other cadenza which is why that is considered the "original" one. If this is true he must have changed his mind.

  • I swear I'm going to play that one day
