  • My dad bless him was a window cleaner and a chimney sweep for many years and we all enjoyed listening to George and watched many of his films as kids. He was not from our world as kids but he crossed over the age gap into everyone's lives.

I remember asking dad if he saw some sites when cleaning windows. He said "I don't discuss business son" He then added " well there was a lady next door to the house I was cleaning, sun bathing naked. I must have taken five thou off the window with the shammy

  • some of the film bell bottom george was filmed in my town fleetwood.

  • God , I miss this man and his films and all !-( must be getting old LOL -)-and Norman Wisdom as well - god , irreplaceable !-what are we stuck with now ?--makes you long for these days in the industry !( not the hard times ..but it did bring fourth a lot of British humor, ( the best in the world, News BBC,films,a whole lot and saving europe's arse in the war too !-and what do you get back ? Hnnn-they send you all now ( never have so FEW done so much FOR SO MANY ! :( thanks You lot ! ) :) gus

  • the sheer speed of his playing is amazing - the best example I think is the end few seconds to the "Leaning on a lampost" track. Just when you think he can't get any faster - he does. Wonderfull to listen to and watch.

  • Him and Bob Dylan with their war protest songs eh!?

  • @dannyamosflynn Yep, they've got something to say. I've always thought 'if you do a job as a soldier and you get killed, don't complain to me'. What kind of mind chooses to do that? Do you know that this guy was probably richer than Dylan? Big star... singing about sex most of the time lol

  • @McPrfctday It never occurred to me that he might have been richer than Dylan, I was sure he probably had more women than Dylan though - behind the streaked and muddied panes of suburban houses, that not even a lot of elbow grease and hard rain could clean.

  • lol this tune is catchy love the dancing , classic

  • i saw this on tv last week lol what a guy and a fucking wigan legend only good thing to come from wigan accept a wigan pie yum

  • mark could i ask you a question please when george is playing this solo. when playing the split stroke ,his he playing a tripplet or a really quick flick its so hard to tell

  • The funniest thing to ever come from Wigan.

The second funniest thing to ever come from Wigan, and sounding very much the same, Luke Marsden off Big Brother.

  • I heard this song for the first time today- the film was on T.V. this morning. A very entertaining song- he was a LEGEND!

  • Yes I also watched it on BBC :D

  • i need to buy alll of his movies will be good if they are on dvd :)

    xxxxx

  • when all the navy personel laugh at 0:46 sounds a bit cokney :p

    but still a great song

  • have you heard that banjo-ukulele went under the hammer this week for about $800 or something

  • I shouldn't think it would have done - I have a uke made by Ludwig as well, and it cost the equivalent of about $2,000. Also, if that uke of George's had been sold, I would have known.

And, musicality12345: Yes, I know it is... I wrote that in the video description.

  • Is that all?

  • This is from the film 'Bell Bottom George'

  • I like this dude he is funny

  • Bell Bottom George

  • well george sadly seems to be forgotten these days but with moviesand songs like these he'll live forever

  • my favourite George Formby song of all time

  • I love this song too. But, being a Yank, I don't understand what he sings at :59-1:00. Anyone care to help me out?

  • i could be totally wrong about this but i think it has something to do with fishing as the previous line is

'the seas all right for sharks and whales and things the like of that'

    and the next line is

.but id rather stick my marlin spike in ilkley moors baht 'at'

  • Thanks, newmodfather, I looked up the phrase "Ilkley Moors baht' at," and found it on the internet. Very interesting indeed. I also like the little slip-slide dance he does near the end, as "fruity" mentioned. It's a shame our view of it is blocked by the bunk. It would've been something to see! G F was a multi-talented performer, and he made it look effortless.

  • Telmanyi - "Bell Bottom George" and indeed George's other 6 Columbia films are coming out on DVD about now. I think they will be Region 2 but these days it's fairly easy to obtain a programme to enable all regions to play on a computer.

This is my favourite Formby song. I am lucky enough to own a Ludwig identical to George's.

  • @Telmanyi

He says, "I'd rather stick my marlin's pike in ilkley moor ba' tat"

And I just realised somebody else replied to your comment, so never mind hehe. :)

  • this is great, it sounds the best..

    g

  • Why can we not see these Films on the Television anymore these days!!!!!

  • It was this clip that made me take up the uke, but I can't find the music ofor this anywhere, and idea's?

  • You know when you turn on your machine and there's always a number of things you do by routine - check emails etc? Well playing this clip is now in my routine. It cheers me up no end whether I'm feeling up or down. A very clever guy making a living writing songs to make people laugh and enjoy themselves. No wonder he had a smile as big as a nag's cakehole!

  • Love the song. Love the slip/slide dance.

    LOL

  • you do not spell greats like that

  • one of the all time greats!
