I haven't, though I want to. We are almost finished with the restoration of an ex- Core of Engineers A-4D now, and that will be the car that we travel with; the ST-2 is a great car, and she is an excellent runner, but I don't want to put many miles on her, and, as I'm sure you know, as she is a popper, things can go awry fairly easily without much provocation.
Yeah, they usually range from $2500 - $4500, though they seem to be on the latter end of the spectrum more often. However, most of the good open cars usually go for $1000 - $1500; NARCOA's "for sale" page is generally the best place to find a good deal.
It's the Blue Ridge Scenic Railroad in Blue Ridge, GA, part of the old L&N "Hook and Eye" line (though the line used to connect to the Southern's Murphy Branch via the Mineral Bluff wye). I wish that was the case with the 722, but unfortunately the line abandoned it's steam program last year, and shut down the steam shop for good; 1702 and 722 face a rather uncertain future right now.
Yeah, I know; they had just finished the ultrasound on the boiler, I don't even know if they were able to get much further on her than that. And you're right, it would probably be for the best if the TVRM acquired her, but they are almost finished with the 630, 722's sister, so a SRR 2-8-0 will be operating sometime this year. Fortunately for the TVRM and the 4501, funding for the 4501 was provided by a private individual, and she is currently stripped-down and awaiting an ultrasound.
Thank you! And yeah, gotta love the sound of the two-cycle engines; the ST-2 doesn't have the stock muffler though, so it's far louder than the other cars.
interesting

Where is at and what railroad was it,
Was it a former Southern Railroad line?
I see that you must like the Southern Railroad. I think that the Great Smokey Mountain Ry is restoring the 722

Well it a shame that they ended the steam
program. I saw photos of 722 and it look
like she had a new or reworked boiler on
the frame. Mabbe TVRM will buy it but they
are doing 4501 right now and thats going to be some bucks.
