@globalModValue I understand the need for it but that doesn't mean there aren't work arounds. I mostly heat my house with old pallets. I went to a place that had them, told them what I wanted to do & got permission to take what they had. They even bring them closer to the road so I don't have to carry them as far. I'm pleased to see that what I don't take gets taken by others who probably use it like I do, for heat & construction projects. This way many people benefit.
@globalModValue There are liability issues. If you get hurt the owner could feasibly be sued even though there's an expectation that stuff in trash bins is no longer wanted. But as long as the owner still has control of stuff in a dumpster (or trash can) a court could hold that they're responsible for what happens to to the stuff.
Good tips & if you don't mind I'll add a few: Surgical-type though not sterile gloves. Heavy gloves don't always prevent liquids from leaking through. Old towel/rag you can throw away. You'll need it. If you can't use the clothing you find take it home, wash it & give it to Good Will/ Sally Anne. Pass along your good fortune to others. If you're confronted by dumpster's owner & he doesn't want to hear your story, don't argue! Be polite, walk away & find another dumpster.
I have a half a pool cue with a big hook screwed into the end and yes a good pair of gloves is essential. I also use a head torch to keep my hands free.
Never make a mess, stay discreet and quiet and you'll be able to return to the same spots over and over again.
i always check them when i see them but here in new zealand you do not see them very much

A good spot is the bins at carwashes, People empty their cars out there.
I got enough clean clothes to last the rest of my life, T.shirts, Jeans etc all laundered.
This is in Australia.
