Was sitting in a bar not to long ago in a Zinkwazi Beach. I had had a few drinks had been doing karaoke earlier at the stage bar. This man to my left turned to me and said.. nice singing. I said thanks. I said do you sing. He said, well he used to.. I asked if he was part of a band. He said, well he works in the Suger mill now days but used to.. @KalahariSurf No - The Brass Bell is in Kalk Bay - next to the station - was still there when I was last in SA 8 years ago. Rotunda was in Camps Bay - but closed in the eighties or late 70's. There were always live bands there on weekends - Ballyhoo was the main one. Eddie Eksteen etc.

We left SA in '82 for America, but my heart never left Pinelands. I think South Africans tend to overrate many of the local bands (Rabbit, McCully Workshop), but we did manage some truly great acts that were up to international standards: Tidal Wave, éVoid, Boom Boom Room, and of course Ballyhoo all had potential to be overseas hits. Shame I missed the peak of the SA music scene in the 80s. I still pine for "home" though....

There is a South African restaurant in Brooklyn, NY called Madiba's. It used to have a South African chef and the food there was outstanding authentic food. But the chef is gone and now it's Mexicans running the kitchen and the food reflects it, unfortunately. The head waiter is one of the okes from The Soft Shoes (I forget his name now). There are some online stores you can get Pro Nutro, istampu and other SA stuff.
