Yeah I started to listen to indie when I was about 11 as well. Its cool that there are kids out there who aren't glued to MTV and actually explore the wondrous world of fantastic music that is out there.
I commend the younger indie listeners! (: I've been listening since age twelve, and that makes a good three years. So many incredible indie bands out there. Feist, Grizzly Bear, Broken Social Scene, Arcade Fire, Spoon, Stars, Apostle Of Hustle, Modest Mouse, Sea Wolf, Great Northern... This is the best genre.
Indie is quite a large 'category'. Youtube is great for finding new music. Find an artist you like and in the 'related videos" category you'll find stuff by the same artist as well as similar stuff. Good luck on the mighty quest for music. It's a never ending journey, that I'm sure you'll enjoy every step fo the way.
@ineedanewcomputer I started listening to indie at age 11 too, when I discovered Damien Rice. I was extremely depressed then, and constantly thought about killing myself. It saved my life. I'm 20 now, and still there's not a musical genre that makes me feel more alive and meaningful as when I throw on an indie record.
@ineedanewcomputer That's how I got my taste as well. first she listened to punkrock, then she listened to reggae and then later Hip hop and when she was older electro. I've listened to the same stuff, but stuck on Hip hop for a while, and then I found my music: jazz and indie
this song makes me think of death...but i still love it....sorry to be morbid it's just so intense.
