  • f*ck! 2 years in BJJ + 1 year in Grappling and only after watching this video does shrimping make sense! I gave up on it and resorted to other escapes, because I just could not get it to work.

  • I'd love to be taught by master Keith Owen! He's very interesting, and he knows his thing like nobody else!

  • I'm not trolling but I am not sure I agree with the idea of shrimping with both feet. I'll give it a try next class. Thanks for the idea.

  • Wow.... what a cool teacher.

  • Guans dude u really helped I knew there was more to shrimping now I know the right way

  • been doing bjj for 4 years and still shrimping wrong. thanks for the upload i knew it had something to do with my feet now I know. I'm the person that does the half ass shrimp. thanks. Now to get my reps going.

  • Sounds advice - thanks so much!

  • This looks more like bridging !

  • shrimpin' aint easy

  • I've been shrimping wrong. =(

  • ari thank you so much for your channel...it's amazing and such a great resource

  • Isn't that the elbow escape? why do they call it shrimping?

  • From what I know, the elbow escape is not a single move, it is a technique that envolves many moves, one of the is shrimping.

  • @GuamKomudo So it's all part of one technique right?

  • No, in the Gracie system which I'm under the "elbow escape" is a term we use at our gym which means someone has you counted or in half guard whatever. You put your elbow on one of their legs and then shrimp out and try to get your other leg out. Shrimping is a technique that is used during the elbow escape, but the elbow escape is a combo of moves, shrimping is just one move withen the whole technique "elbow escape" make sense?

  • @GuamKomudo Yeah Thanks dude.

  • We meet again. Great vid.

  • Shrimpin' ain't easy...

  • he looks like a nice guy.............

  • Damn that Asian chick is cute she can throw me up in a triangle Choke any day lol!

  • Keith is an excellent instructor

  • ahahah just realized i was taught the "wrong way" of shrimping =P

Thanks a lot for this...u have no clue how this improved my game!!

  • great video like always from you guys

  • i'm sure he can destroy me but i kind of disagree with this technique. with your feet way out to the side you are not able to get a really good upa (buck). if you bring both heels all the way to your butt you can really thrust your hips up in the air which allows you to float your opponents weight. then shrimp very hard....

  • @worksurfplay I agree. This is ONE way of shrimping, not the only way. It is Owen's way. I shrimp like this when doing a mount escape, but not when recovering guard. It is all about context.

  • Great Video, Keith Owen you are the man! and a great instructor to learn from. Keep up the good work, I'm learning heaps off you all time

    Thank you...

  • 2:18 girl grappler, bet that can get awkward

  • By far the best shrimping instruction ive found. Thanks

  • iz that SERIOUSLY how im suppose 2b shrimpin?????

  • Good explanation.

  • great vid

  • this really is an incredible video on the shrimp out, not many trainers go over it but its probably one of the most valuable techniques to use on the ground

  • Thanks this helps me alot.

  • augiemxc i cant remember my comment so i dont have a response for you

  • My instructor makes us clean the floor by wetting the backs of our gi and we shrimp all over the mats after practice :)

  • sounds like a serious health issue....

  • @Fupper16 tel me yor jokin

id tel my instructor 2 kiss my ass if he wants 2 fuck my gii

so i can clean hiz god damn mats

  • Woow theres a girl O.o

  • Not surprising to me. BJJ is excellent for women

  • love watchin Keith's videos, so much knowledge

  • And soo much comic :P

  • The cool thing about shrimping this way is that people think they can take your back but what happens is they get their knees spread apart and your midsection gets catapulted two feet away from them before they know it. Great escape for MMA!- Keith Owen

  • "we meet again":P

  • Isnt he giving up his back, by shrimping like that. Ive been instructed to stay as low and tight as possible

  • low and tight when ur on ur back and some one has mounted u?

wow really fined a new guy

    explosiveInc!!

  • good stuff, shrimping is pretty much everything when you're on your back all your positioning and escapes and subs require shrimping or some application of this kind of movement

  • shrimping helps me a lot! it can even help clean the mat. ;)

  • lmao 109

  • "we meet again." lol :D great video

  • Keith is the man !

  • AWESOME!!!

  • I used to do this in BJJ all the time, my instructor would hammer me on how important this was to learn, good explanation.

  • i hate shrimping for warmups. Going back and fourth across the dogo 4 times. gets a sweat going.

  • keith owen is a great teacher

  • thinking B4 doing , niece one

  • this exact move (shrimping)did i train today, but within Krav Maga, ;-)

  • Krav is an amazingggg martial art/ self defense tactic. =)

  • nice vid. ive been shrimping wrong by the looks of things!! keep em coming ari :-)

  • Seems like a good professor, it makes learning much easier when they can put things into perspective.

  • keith Owen is such an amazing BJJ Instructor.. his information and tips are basically second to none!

  • great video like always

  • we have shrimp races up and down the mma gym

  • You guys are really putting out some great videos right now. WOW! My students and myself are getting alot out this. Thank You.

  • Keith Owen's vids are always so entertaining and informative at the same time. Finding an instructor like him would be a great experience.

  • "We meet again" lol

Shrimping is by far one of the best things to master in grappling.

  • man hope y can find a BJJ trainer in my city:(

  • Good tips like always! tks

  • i like the keith owen vids. i learn a lot from him in each vid. more please!

  • excellent! finer points like this make a world of difference!

  • haha hell of a teach

  • wish my teacher can be keith owen...

  • I like his enthusiasm..

  • Its funny how many times you can learn something, yet still learn something new each time.

  • Amen to that!!!!

  • lol i learned dis as my 1st MMA leson

  • that's an awesome teacher.

  • Keith Owen is so awesome

  • He's so funny, and all the things he's showing really works.

I've always loved the scientific parts of grappling and he's all about that.

  • ive done bjj for 2 months was about to get my first strip then i got a rib injurie and been out for one month now very sad :(

  • work through it, it'll get better faster.

  • LOL Ever tried Doing BJJ/ Rolling for an Hour with Bruised ribs. Granted a month out if a long time(unless you had a compound fracture) but just working Rolling with Bruised ribs Blows, lol.

I agree that most Injuries it does help to work though, but I would say Knee, Back, and Ribs are three that you can make things FAR WORSE by trying to work through them.

  • how long does it take to get a black belt?

  • it averages on you, the teacher, and the time you put in.

  • Took Keith Owen 13 years.

  • how do you get like a third degree black belt?

  • You order them online.

  • @Submissions101 but it can take about 6 to 8 years.. about 2 years per belt level. or depending you talent skill level and hours u put in....everything is relative.

  • depends on how much you learn.. But its alot longer than most MA.

  • Depends where you train, how fast you learn, how many times a week you train and who your professor is. BJ Penn did it in 3 years. Pe de Pano did it in about the same if I remember correctly. Some schools and systems are very structured and are time based, others are judged by what your professor thinks your level is and when he feels like promoting you. It seems like the guys that got promoted fast competed and won alot.

  • 6-8 years (BJ Penn, well, is not your average guy)

  • @8zee8 it toke BJ Penn 3 years

not that i'm a bj fan

  • @lee36bob whaa i thought it was 2 years for a normal guy just to get a blue :P

  • @JKT6 bj penn isn't even close to a normal person, its crazy how flexible he is, i'm just glad that frankie edgar beat him

  • @JKT6 yeah on average blue takes a solie year and half to 2 years for a blue, and a solid 4-5 years for purple, from there on it is all downhill and easy, they say purple belts have the same knowledge as a blackbelt there skill just isnt as refined. wat a purple has to think about a black belt can do in there sleep, quote by carlson gracie jr. you usually have your purple 2 years and then your brown 2-3 years, then black the rest of your life.

  • @8zee8 depends on who ur getting it under, and your experience in MMA/Judo

not really a set "it takes x years". Depends on instructor and prior combat experience. Having experience in Judo,or Aikido will GREATLY reduce the amount of time though for sure.

  • @8zee8 36 months...

  • depends on how frequent u train..usually no less than 8 or 9 years more like 10

  • @8zee8

Took BJ Penn 4 years, few weeks later after receiving his black belt he won World Jiu-Jitsu Championship in his weight division ,so it depends on the person himself and how much time he invests in training

  • @leothephantom7 3 years mate

  • @leothephantom7 BJJ had a lot of natural talent early on, combined with rich parents which allowed him to train 10 years into about 3 or 4 instead of working.

  • @8zee8 General rule is 10+ years

  • @8zee8 Took my teacher 15 years I believe.

  • @8zee8 it takes 5 to 15 years. depending on the person.

  • GREAT TEACHER! I'll use this in my next class.

  • love the videos thx so much

  • lol, Keith Owen cracks me up. Been following your vids for a little while now and have finally started practising BJJ. There's definitely no substitute for actually doing it, so if you are reading this and are thinking of starting BJJ, join a class now. Its great fun!!

  • i do that "shrimping" as warmup, pretty good if you do it on a long line like he does in the end for a minute or two, basicly everytime

  • Love it but when are more submission 101 vids comin up?

  • These are Sub 101 vids are they not?

  • I think he means you demonstrating submissions..etc. But I dont care, I like all these videos.

  • awesome video. Apparently I have been shrimping wrong the whole time I've been training. Keep 'em coming Ari

  • There are of course subtle differences in shrimping from school to school but I consider myself good at getting back to guard but Keith's little tips increased this by many fold.
