f*ck! 2 years in BJJ + 1 year in Grappling and only after watching this video does shrimping make sense! I gave up on it and resorted to other escapes, because I just could not get it to work.
been doing bjj for 4 years and still shrimping wrong. thanks for the upload i knew it had something to do with my feet now I know. I'm the person that does the half ass shrimp. thanks. Now to get my reps going.
No, in the Gracie system which I'm under the "elbow escape" is a term we use at our gym which means someone has you counted or in half guard whatever. You put your elbow on one of their legs and then shrimp out and try to get your other leg out. Shrimping is a technique that is used during the elbow escape, but the elbow escape is a combo of moves, shrimping is just one move withen the whole technique "elbow escape" make sense?
i'm sure he can destroy me but i kind of disagree with this technique. with your feet way out to the side you are not able to get a really good upa (buck). if you bring both heels all the way to your butt you can really thrust your hips up in the air which allows you to float your opponents weight. then shrimp very hard....
@worksurfplay I agree. This is ONE way of shrimping, not the only way. It is Owen's way. I shrimp like this when doing a mount escape, but not when recovering guard. It is all about context.
this really is an incredible video on the shrimp out, not many trainers go over it but its probably one of the most valuable techniques to use on the ground
The cool thing about shrimping this way is that people think they can take your back but what happens is they get their knees spread apart and your midsection gets catapulted two feet away from them before they know it. Great escape for MMA!- Keith Owen
good stuff, shrimping is pretty much everything when you're on your back all your positioning and escapes and subs require shrimping or some application of this kind of movement
LOL Ever tried Doing BJJ/ Rolling for an Hour with Bruised ribs. Granted a month out if a long time(unless you had a compound fracture) but just working Rolling with Bruised ribs Blows, lol.
I agree that most Injuries it does help to work though, but I would say Knee, Back, and Ribs are three that you can make things FAR WORSE by trying to work through them.
@Submissions101 but it can take about 6 to 8 years.. about 2 years per belt level. or depending you talent skill level and hours u put in....everything is relative.
Depends where you train, how fast you learn, how many times a week you train and who your professor is. BJ Penn did it in 3 years. Pe de Pano did it in about the same if I remember correctly. Some schools and systems are very structured and are time based, others are judged by what your professor thinks your level is and when he feels like promoting you. It seems like the guys that got promoted fast competed and won alot.
@JKT6 yeah on average blue takes a solie year and half to 2 years for a blue, and a solid 4-5 years for purple, from there on it is all downhill and easy, they say purple belts have the same knowledge as a blackbelt there skill just isnt as refined. wat a purple has to think about a black belt can do in there sleep, quote by carlson gracie jr. you usually have your purple 2 years and then your brown 2-3 years, then black the rest of your life.
@8zee8 depends on who ur getting it under, and your experience in MMA/Judo
not really a set "it takes x years". Depends on instructor and prior combat experience. Having experience in Judo,or Aikido will GREATLY reduce the amount of time though for sure.
Took BJ Penn 4 years, few weeks later after receiving his black belt he won World Jiu-Jitsu Championship in his weight division ,so it depends on the person himself and how much time he invests in training
@leothephantom7 BJJ had a lot of natural talent early on, combined with rich parents which allowed him to train 10 years into about 3 or 4 instead of working.
lol, Keith Owen cracks me up. Been following your vids for a little while now and have finally started practising BJJ. There's definitely no substitute for actually doing it, so if you are reading this and are thinking of starting BJJ, join a class now. Its great fun!!
There are of course subtle differences in shrimping from school to school but I consider myself good at getting back to guard but Keith's little tips increased this by many fold.

From what I know, the elbow escape is not a single move, it is a technique that envolves many moves, one of the is shrimping.
