@TheYammit I am not surprised that people didn't understand the movie in Usa. Americans are used to silly movies with "HAPPY ENDINGS". The brave does not sell his soul, but his body. It's the sacrifice he makes for his family. If you don't understand, read the book. The Brave is great. It was celebrate here in France.
@DouceFrance21 I understood that he did it for his family and that he sold himself I was trying to find the right word and all I could think of was his soul. And as far as happy endings it really doesnt matter to me how a movie ends. I just thought the movie was too drawn out to end the way it did.
@JOSUE1987...ummmm, you know that Johnny Depp is part Native American, right? And that he is the director of this film? Not really so rediculous that he was chosen for the role...
@jamras80 Actually it is. See, even if he is part Native American, what I read is that he says his great-grandmother was part Cherokee. That would leave him with a small fraction of Native blood in him. Ergo, he cannot play a convincing Native American.
@esergone Tahlequa is not the "Cherokee Capital", There no indigenous Cherokees in any part of Oklahoma. The eastern states, such as GA, NC, SC, VA,KY, ect... ended up in OK on the horrific Trail of Tears. Osage Tribes are OK largest indigenous American Indians.
@Jrende730 Yes that's true. But unless you are a time traveler, the seat of Cherokee government is in Tahlequah now, has been for over 100 years, and there are plenty of full blood Cherokee here.
"Tahlequah has the distinction of being the capital of both the Cherokee Nation and the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians."

First ten minutes are good, but it's down hill from there. Only four or so scenes deal, and deal weakly, with the premise of "snuff films," and the rest cold have be churned out by the Disney studios.
I saw the Cannes interview Depp did for this movie, and me think he spoke with "forked tongue."
this is kind of a weird movie. don't get me wrong, i LOVE JD, but I think the guy is just a little too in touch and proud of his native american heritage.
If you even can't be proud of your heritage than what can you be proud of? It's one of the things that's closest to you, like your family. Your standards and values.
@Siddhin and yet it amounts to nothing compared to your action. heritage is perspective, nothing more. A man descended from royalty can be a crook just as easily as a man descended from pirates could be a powerful businessman. In the end, your life is still a blank canvas, and the brush is still in your hand.
so I guess I'll answer it, if you can't be proud of your heritage, what can you be proud of? Yourself.

@VejasHugas It wasn't released in the U.S because American film critics judged the movie pretty bad and Johnny was pissed off because of that so he didn't released on the U.S he only released at Cannes Film Festival.
In my opinion The Brave is a very very good film, it's sad, but it's very true and it shows the values of a real man who loves his family really much and will do anything for his family.
It isn't even officially available in the U.S.. But it isn't that hard to find a Latin American import or bootleg online. I've seen it, and it's a very good film that borders on greatness. It is a crying shame that no one has ever released it in the U.S.. I also have the rare novel it's based on. It is also one of Brando's last film roles, and he is excellent. Depp should make an effort now that he's bigger than ever to get this film out.
Well, the copy I have is strictly a bootleg vhs tape of not too hot quality, but definitely watchable. I found it on eBay several years ago. The movie is now over a decade old. (It was shown at Cannes in '97). I think I got this tape on EBay in 2000. They HAVE, however, since cracked down on piracy more, though.
It's not a matter of him making an effort. Johnny Depp didn't like how the American critics didn't like it at some film festival, even though everyone else did, so he decided not to release it in the US.
This Movie's awesome but so underrated! Sad film though. :(
Johnny Depp looks so damn hot in it.

JD: Just watched your LarryK interview, and you mentioned this movie, it would truly be nice to view this work of yours and Mr. Brando. thanks!

Weak. VERY weak. Good premise poorly executed. Think 'snuff film' meets ABC After School Special.

Marlon Brando was excellent! But the movie wasnt that great and the ending sucked.
Johnny sold his soul to Marlon..

It's a good premise. Unfortunately, The Brave has all the edge of an ABC After School Special.
If you're ga ga over Depp, you'll think it's some of his best work. If you're not, you'll think it's some of his best work.

How ridiculous that johnny Depp was chosen for the role. He doesn't even look like a Native American.... he's too light .
JOSUE1987 1 year ago
@JOSUE1987 He looks just like a Cherokee. Who says Cherokee have dark skin?
Miss Keetoowah Cherokee last year was lighter than me.
