This movie is beautifully made. But as a chinese descent, I find it so dark, intense and depressing that it is hard for me to watch it the second time. I think it has something to do with the cultural-historical imprint that we have inherited, even though we've never really lived through the WW2 era. I would imagine that it would be like having a Jewish descent watching the Schindler's List. Almost too intense to sit through the entire movie.

Beside "Hero", this is the best Chinese movie I've ever seen. Ang Lee is such a genius. Tang Wei and Tony Leung are brilliant! I've watched this movie many times and I never get bored. It's awsome.

Tony Leung has always been a great actor, but this is without doubt his BEST performance.

The Western people probably don't realize this - Tony Leung in the movie spoke Mandarin, yet his original language is Cantonese (although both are Chinese, they sound very differently). Though Tony can speak a bit Mandarin, he is definitely not fluent with it. So Tony put up a top notch performance by speaking a language he's not fluent, amazing!

And Tang Wei, for a new comer, super talented.

@TIE47v Agreed: Of all the Tony Leung Chiu Wai performances I've seen, this is by far his best. It would be impossible to improve on it. Same for Tang Wei.

My favorite scene -- the acting is tops -- is that in theteahouse where Mak Tai Tai sings to Mr. Yee. Powerful.

and i m not surprised by liang's acting, he has always been so good.

but the girl is surprisingly good , being only 27 and having this one as her first film, she did an excellent job!

His movies are not just about "gay people and sex". He directed Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Sense and Sensibility, The Ice Storm, and Hulk. These movies are not "sex" movies as you put it. It's about casting the RIGHT actors to play the characters, NOT casting who's hot.

Zhang Ziyi wanted to play the main girl in 'Lust, Caution' but Ang Lee politely refused because she wasn't right for the role.

He chose Tang Wei and Wong Leehom because they had a certain period quality and looked Southern Chinese, those characters needed to look the part.

If Ang Lee was looking for someone to play a character that Takeshi's right for, surely he would pick him. But it hasn't been the case.
