Tolkien did not consider his mythology to be fiction. He said "that legends and myths are largely made of 'truth' (from a letter by J.R.R. Tolkien to Milton Waldman 1951). By the way, read this letter if you can. I found it in The Silmarillion, second edition, as part of the Preface to the second edition. It is astonishing!

You are using one person's ignorance as a basis for an assumption about around 307,006,550. And I'm saying that's not at all legitimate. If we're to go by your assumption then using myself as an example, the US pop. is well read in Greek myths, and actually not all impressed by Orpheus anyway. Morpheus is a pop culture name, used in movies and comics, so more memorable.
