It's amazing how frightening this is ... no screams, no blood, no hysteria or wild chases with crazy camera angles ... just a lot of quiet muttering and dark hallways ...
I love these Ghost stories by M R James watched them every xmas when I was growing up..scared the pants off me though.
There was another TV dramatisation not by M R James that really freaked me called "A Child's Voice" about a late night radio host who reads a G Story on air, and as he does he hears the voice of a small child pleading with him not to continue, which of course he does. The actor T P Mckenna plays the role of the story teller.
Another suitably creepy adaptation from the BBC-'View From a Hill' the previous year was also terrific-just wish they'd do a new one this year...didn't think 'Crooked House' qualified as a Ghost Story For Christmas,as good as it was.
Damn i can't find it anywhere at all i've tried doing various word combinations on Google to try and find it but no luck =-(
I remember the mother of the family was in the cellar doing the laundry and she could hear her mother calling from upstairs but her mother was dead. She went upstairs to the living room and saw that big black thingy i mentioned. *sighs* My dad told me back then that it was called The Haunted but it's not that either.
Was it actually a film or a tv movie. I think I know one similar one from years ago. Did all the evanglicals come around to the house in a candle lit procession singing hymes in order to try rid them of the spirits. At the end of the film they think they have got rid of it. The woman is in the kitchen and her name gets called out again by her mother's voice. It then ends.
DrMontague perhaps you could help me, kind sir? I'm not sure if The Haunting is the same one i am thinking about. The one that scared the crap out of me had this sort of black shadowy blob/figure that would moves across the living room whilst making this sort of prolonged "farting" noise. The mans wife had lost her mother to death but she could still hear her when she was in the cellar. Do you know which movie that is? =-/
Sorry I don't know that film. The Haunting is a b&W movie made in 1963. It starred Julie Harris and Clare Bloom the director was Robert Wise, the same guy who directed 'The Sound of Music'
The Haunting is bloody scary! I remember watching it as a kid and i was literally laughing with fear! You know when you get so scared that you're laughing histerically? That is the only movie that has ever made me do that.
Also Night of the Demons is another great classic, i remember the ending when it comes out of the steam of the train. I think this story could have been scarier though but sadly it wasn't that scary and i'm half way through part 5 =-(
Ooohh! I enjoyed that. I am assuming by your name, DrMarkway, you will be uploading The Haunting sometime too? A modern recommendation, if I may? The Collingswood Story is a wee independent US film that is similar in creepiness and witchcraft.
I'm also have another channel where my user name is Dr Montague from shirley Jackson's novel The Haunting of Hill House. I decided to set up different channels. I'm going to use this one for ghost stories. Thank for the recommendation of The Collingswood Story I will check it out.
Perhaps I'll have to subscribe to your others as well. BTW my favourite Shirley Jackson novel is 'We Have Always Lived at the Castle' but I don't know anyone else who's read it - have you?
Yes I have. I bought the The Master Pieces of Shirley Jackson which includes the Haunting of Hill house, The Lottery, other short stories, and 'We Have Always Lived at the Castle'
(Theme:Madness within their family is no worse then the madness found in the outside world)I might start calling you Merricat, but you might think I'm trying to poison you!
I knew that if I checked once a week - every week - I'd find that someone had posted another of M.R.James ghost stories! Thanks for giving me the chance to see this, DrMarkway ;>)
Watch for 'Night of the Demon' based on MR James's Casting the Runes. The Tennent by Roman Polanski, and The Blood on Satan's Claw. Will upload in about one month's time.
Love David Burke. So gentleman. Always.

Love M.R's talent for atmosphere, but his stories usualy do not have ending. In his books, things are left to readers imagination.

Well well...a little turgid but pleasant enough.
Not a patch on Whistle & I'll come to you, The Signalman or The Woman in Black...A Warning to the Curious and Lost Hearts also very good.

Yes that sounds very familiar, i remember the family had to leave the house and stood outside around a fire or something. The house was pretty big.
