I've been a trucker for a long time, this is not road rage. I have ran a few off the road, chased others, intimidated hundreds. Yes I know it's wrong, but I can tell you it is normally because someone is being an ass and I have no problem letting them know they are being selfish, rude or whatever. Wrong place, wrong time. Although I feel most of them deserve it.
I totally side with the truck driver on this one. Dennis Weaver pulls a move I see almost every day on the Northern State Parkway. Someone comes speeding up behind you, tailgates you for a while, passes you and then becomes preoccupied with the radio,(or a phone these days),and once they pass you they then slow down slower than what you are doing. I just wish I had this truck and I would chase these bad drivers right off the roads.
I always thought this film was just about how an every day situation can become terrifying because of one change, like David says, "there's some things that you always think will never change, like being able to drive on a public highway without someone trying to murder you"

Steven Spielberg said he implied the guy in the truck as a serial killer , and the license plates on the front of the truck are past victims, so its not a man vs souless machine ref, though that is a good idea
I would like to advance a new hypothesis regarding this movie - that the truck is a figment of David Mann's subconscious mind. It may sound crazy at first glance, but Spielberg has actually given many clues indicating this - in almost every scene, actually. From the first radio talk show broadcasts to the Chuck's Cafe scene (where the driver is apparently never in the cafe to begin with) to the driver's door of the truck being open when it... well, spoiler alert, but you get the idea.

If you pause at 7:54 you'll see that it's a human driving the truck not a spectral figure, I don't know maybe it is a ghost but it looks human at 7:54.
Road rage + criminal psychopathy. One of the creepiest things about this movie is the fact that the viewer never gets to see the driver's face- this adds an air of mystery to the movie that never quite goes away no matter how many times you watch it.
Whooah the driving scenes make me diiizzy. How fast are we going?
First time I saw that tanker I knew something was up, I'm like WTH? What kinda truck is that? I knew it was a tanker but somehow I had a funny feeling, call it instinct, that the driver was up to no good.
OH MY GOD DUDE THANKS ALOT FOR UPLOADING THIS CAUSE I HAVE BEEN LOOKING EVERYWHERE TO SEE THIS VIDEO AGAIN i saw it once while i was lttle while i had only cable and i saw it and i was amazed on such a good movie it was and i wanted to see it again THANK YOU SIR

old movies like this were just good because they didn't need special effects it was just talent, now movies are cool but not as captivating as the old ones
Friends, know this: this movie is NOT about road rage. It's about man vs. the machine. In other words, it's about the domination of man by the very technology he has created. Notice that the truck driver is merely a spectral figure, the "soul" of the machine.
@Jitpring Bullshit it's an excellent ripoff of the Vanishing Point film from 1971. The truck driver is a sociopath and he's probably done this before. Weaver plays a henpecked wimp, you want to wring his neck by the half hour mark LOL. A terrific performance. And Spielberg did a bang up job. It's *all* about road rage and Weaver's character's impotence.
@airkuna He's one of those types who take simple films, add things of their own (which is okay), but then treats it as if its THE meaning. And somehow people see this as being smart.
Somone said that the film was about David running from his fears and finally facing and beating them in the end. Theres much more evidence to support that one than "Man vs Machine".
No, that's what the movie "Maximum Overdrive" was about. This movie is an expose' of human character traits- some amusing, some dark, and some mysterious.
@Jitpring Great observation indeed. But after watching the movie today, it feels like man vs himself. Where David Mann is portrayed as this wimpy dude that is willing to conquer his fear but panics under pressure when he gets pushed. The truck is like a demon inside him that constantly challenges his fear over and over again until he finally learns how to conquer and defeat his own fear regardless of his wimpiness.
Damn! They almost hit the pedestrians at 1:18! Reminds me of all the dumbass pedestrians in Spokane that walk out in the middle of the street and saunter across. LOL

flubbeflabber 3 months ago
@flubbeflabber
The movie implies that the trucker started his attack due to a mixture of road rage and criminal psychopathy.
