The link to this video on Rense.com is titled "Sen Joseph McCarthy- American Patriot." I like Jeff Rense but some of the people running his web site are jingoist jackasses. One minute they are complaining about out of control government and the next they are applauding fascism.
Those who consider someone a "Patriot" who has been found guilty of: "1. Contempt and abuse of a Senate committee that looked into his financial affairs in 1952
2. Insulting members of this committee on national television thereby bringing the Senate "into dishonour and disrepute" and obstructing the constitutional process."
wow, Roy Cohn was a fucking monster, I'm so glad he's burning in hell, because the thought of spending eternity with that man is enough to drive someone to atheism.
The audio was edited to remove the long pauses between statements, etc., however it is a verbatim (word for word) record of the event; which can be confirmed by consulting the Congressional Record for that date.
Duh. What a lot of retards don't get is that the reason the Soviet Empire was evil was not it's economy--but that it governed in exactly this same undemocratic, fascist way as Mcarthy et al conducted HUAC
Senator McCarthy was Chairman of the Senate Committee on Government Operations, not connected with the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). There were also similar state committees, ie: California Fact-Finding Committee on Un-American Activities. headed by State Senator Tenney.
yes, McCarthy was evil. regardless if his intentions were good, he was a bully, over-exaggerating his cause for his own political gain. and Mandel had the balls to stand up to him.
nowadays, it's commonly known that McCarthy was a quack. you can idolize him if you like, but it shows bad judgment on your part.
By attacking the US Constitution's First Amendment guarantee of freedom of speech & association (ie: equating membership in the US Communist Party with treason), McCarthy demonstrated that the USA was as much of a conformist dictatorship as was the USSR.
That's funny, because all I know alot of people in the "White Russian" community here in America (i.e. former die-hard Communists who benefited from the Soviet system and spend all their time thinking of ways to see America go down the drain) supported George Bush for president just because they thought he would be such a bad president he would end up bankrupting America.
thanks for putting this video up. shows what a evil person McCarthy and his thugs were. very interesting stuff. i think William Mandel must feel somewhat vindicated knowing he's still alive and McCarthy and Cohn both died the way they did.
The Smith Act was used firstly against the Socialist Workers Party which were an anti-Stalinist, Marxist group. The Act was conceived in order to undemocratically remove the elected leaders of the Teamsters union in Minneapolis who were leading a general strike to unionize the city.
The Communist Party at that time (1940) fully supported the use of the Smith Act to prosecute the SWP as they were supporters of Stalins number one opponent Leon Trotsky.
My grandfather was called infront of McCarthy and his comitee of goons...He was Lee Sabinson..a man who i admire and respect deeply...one of the few who refused to name names, stood up to the degredation of the constitution consequently, yet with pride, reap the consequences of his actions....He was a good man my grandfather
It was ridiculous to go after communism and to consider communism "unAmerican". America was the ally of the communists in WWII. Even blue collar government workers were packing planes with weapons for the communists. How could they expect government workers to make a complete about-face after the war. What nonsense. We loved the communists in this country!
It should be noted that the communist party of the USA had specifically broken with Marxian communism in that it didn't intend to 'overthrow' the government, and stated so in its constitution. This was dismissed as disingenuity, and so members were subject to arrest.
His use of the 5th amendment is very clever. The fifth amendment states that you may refuse in a court to answer a question that may incriminate you.
During the "witch hunts" those who refused to name others based on the First Amendment, which guarantees freedom of association, were cited for contempt, and faced imprisonment. Subsequent "unfriendly witnesses," therefore, claimed the protection of the Fifth Amendment, which protects against being forced to incriminate or degrade oneself. The Supreme Court eventually ruled that the law authorising Congress to investigate something as ambiguos as "un-American activities" was un-Constitutional.
Really? I didn't know that. Where can one learn about all of this? Can anyone recommend any books about Joe McCarthy, the Communist Party (USA), and/or the hearings?
The Producer's intention is to provide information to enhance understanding of the contradiction between the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution's protection of the right to freedom of speech and association, versus the use of governmental power to intimidate and suppress.
What would have happened if he simply said, he is a communist and supports Russia!? I would do so, no matter if it is true or not? .. Or would than something other happen???
Answering any question concerning your political affiliation or belief removed the right to refuse to answer similar questions about others, even people you may only have seen at a meeting. Also, under the law at the time, someone who was an officer in a chapter of the US Communist Party, and also knowledgeable of Communist theory, could be jailed for "Conspiring to advocate the violent overthrow of the US Government at some future time." Ownership of books such as "Das Kapital" was evidence.
Okay now I also understand better the reason why, capitalist propaganda in the US became so strong and the left wing so weak. Mandel defends himself pretty good. I own the Communist Manifesto, I hope such a time wont come back!-) THX for the answer and greetings A King in New York ;)
I like the note about McCarthy: "Suffering from alcoholism , he died of cirhossis of the liver at the age of 51." lol. All the signs of a man full of hatred, fear and guilt. A little man.
this went on until the mid-70's. My father was afraid to leave his union papers in his car as he was in a multi-racial local which was therefore probably a red union rather than a mob union. all of this was based on an illegal edict made by a president but it took 25yrs for the supreme court to strike it down. It had the effect of retarding progressive causes, weakening unions, public schools, health care, standard of living, et al. that was the purpose, fascism is an economic policy
@crazylittlegrace He was filibustering because he was too much of a coward to admit that he was a communist. Why couldn't he just say he wasn't a member? How was that hardcore shit for brains.
@prooc Answering any question concerning your political affiliation or belief removed the right to refuse to answer similar questions about others, even people you may only have seen at a meeting. Answering questions about your own political affiliation thus compelled you to be an informer.
In November 1954 the United States Senate censured Republican Joseph McCarthy for conduct unbecoming to a senator. The vote was 67 to 22, with all the Democrats and about half the Republicans voting against him. He was condemned on two counts:
1. Contempt and abuse of a Senate committee that looked into his financial affairs in 1952
2. Insulting members of this committee on national television thereby bringing the Senate "into dishonour and disrepute" and obstructing the constitutional process.

I read that Harry Anslinger (Killer Weed, Reefer Madness, etc.) supplied McCarthy with morphine from the evidence locker? Is that true?
would explain the witch hunter mentality.
