Hi David - Just discovered you tonight. I'm thrilled to find out that you're in Chicago! I will have to see you sometime. You're doing a wonderful thing here, and as a fellow Elton fanatic, I would love to see you sing some of his songs live! Keep up the great work!! - Rick
wow I only REALLY started getting on youTube like a couple months ago, and I'm sooo addicted now! I think I've traded sleep for youTube lately, and you ain't helpin that any, David!! :D lol. But seriously, wow thanks for all your awesome posts! =) You're obviously very talented, and I appreciate all the years you've no doubt devoted to your music. you rock man! Workin on a few of my own on here too these days. It's slow and painful! : )~ I'm sure I'll be putn in a few requests ;-) Love the wall!
Sorry for the delayed reply. I am familiar with both of those songs. Do you know an LP called "Lady Samantha"? It was an album that was released in Britain in the 70's that contained many of Elton's rarer songs. "Strange Rain" was on there.
Whilst not in the 1968-1975 era and maybe not what you're after, I'd like to see covers of 'Return To Paradise', 'Part Time Love', 'Shooting Star' and 'Ego'.
Yes, I've become more fond of 'Gulliver' and more of the album lately :). I've tried doing it and improvising 'Hay Chewed' and the reprise (note the different 1979-like vocals on 'Skyline Pigeon' compared to the main track).
Could you also do 'I've Seen The Saucers', 'The Greatest Discovery', 'Grimsby', 'Roy Rogers', 'Grey Seal' and if possible, an attempt at the more lively 'Incomplete Band Demo' version of 'Rock And Roll Madonna'?
i like your coverings of elton john. you play it very authentic. there is a great song from the ej-album "a single man", called "madness". it is played very rare. are you interested to play it? it would be nice.
I'd like to hear Blues for Baby and me, and Harmony, when you get to that era. What I like about Bernie Taupin is that he paints this picture for you and then Elton will throw this beautiful melody on top of it, then with all those string arrangements...Wow!
Thanks for the requests. I like all of these you requested. Will definitiely do "Better..." and maybe "Bitter....". "It's Me...." reminds me of living in England.
A great project. You've accurately identified the best of EJ (and Bernie too). My own opinion is that the EJ/BT early collaborations with Gus Dudgeon producing and Paul Buckmaster composing and arranging were masterpieces; particluarly Tumbleweed and Madman. I saw a slip with GYBR, more with Caribou, and then a collapse with Westies. The "fabulous rock celebrity" infection was too deep by then - and in fact EJ never recovered.
Thanks for reminding the world of what the big deal was.
Thank you for your thoughtful comments.GBYBR did show a slip in one sense, but in my opinion, contains some of the high points musically from Elton's early career, & the thematic matter of that album shows them grappling with the pitfalls of fame & fortune, expressed so well in the title track. 'Caribou', often slagged by various critics did contain a # of great songs, & let us not forget the masterpiece 'Cpt. Fantastic', which Gus Dudgeon told me was their greatest work. Do subscribe!
Skyline Pigeon is my favourite Elton John "obscure" song. Well, one of my favourites. There are many of them. And lucky you to have Elton's autograph!
Anyway..... My request is Take Me To The Pilot from the Elton John-album. After I have heard your style in your videos I think you can make a pretty awesome cover of the song.....
It's such pleasure to watch your videos. I took piano lessons for about 10 years in classical piano when I was a kid. When I became 18 I switched to electric guitar. I first discovered Elton John about 4 years ago after watching a show on TV and I pretty much haven't touched the guitar since then. I have started to take piano lessons again in rhythmic piano. The funny thing about Elton John is that I keep discovering new pieces from the 69--75-era. I more or less have new favorite every week.
dude, you're the frigin' MAN! that was excellent! Not enough time to go comment on all your posts. I know all these songs, I own all EJ albums thru Blue Moves, + Lady Samantha & Here and There. i heard EJ's greatest hits when i was about 10 or 11, and i was hooked. now that I got a working turntable, I bought a couple of the older "no top 40 hits" ones i never got when my young musical taste was too unsophisticated to fully appreciate (Empty Sky, Tumbleweed Connection). keep up the great work!
Yes, I know of 'Slave' from Honky Chateau, but have nevr tried to play it. Have you heard the original, fast version. I'd like to invite you to subscribe to my channel. will see about posting 'Slave'. Thanks, David
Would appreciate if you could do 'This Song Has No Title' :). I've attempted it myself, but I'd be interested in your take of it ;). Maybe I'll post it one day ;)!
I definitely have that one planned already. It is enjoyable to play. Thank for the kind comment, and would like to invite to subscribe if you haven't already.
Hey, great to hear someone appreciating the old stuff, esp. the first four albums. How about "Valhalla?" I've tried and failed to figure that one out. Tunes I love playing: "Come Down in Time," "Lady What's Tomorrow," and "Levon."
Thanks for the comments. I really like "Lady What's Tomorrow' and 'Gulliver' from Empty Sky. If I ever figure out the chords to 'Valhalla' I'll send 'em to you. I'd like to invite you to subscribe to my channel for future posts.
Cool, thanks. Hey, I actually hosted an Elton John song swap on my porch last weekend. A guy named William Tonks (see his Myspace page) played "Philadelphia Freedom" (a song I'm not crazy about) acoustically and I thought it sounded outstanding.
Obviously, cam has to be where it is to capture visual but - if it has inputs for external mics -- try placing remote mic closer to piano or bottom strings. (Will boost your vocals as well.)
Cover LOVE SONG & COME DOWN IN TIME, too.
EJ IS under-rated, but probably because little he's done since equals his classic era.
Still, if he'd never written another, those would suffice
Thanks Duncan. Again, I'm really impressed by how you've dug deep into Elton's rare classic stuff. I've spent a lot of time in the U.K. so am curious as to which part you call home.
Ahhh yes :) I recently went to Haworth , part of my A level English course as im studying Wuthering Heights. Its great that youve been over here. -Duncan.
I love you. Sing "Where's The Shoorah?" from Blue Moves if you would. :D

I would Love to hear your version of Harmony. You really play and sing beautifully.
blisstobliss 3 months ago
I love the idea that you are covering Elton's less well known songs!
I have been listening to your videos. I kept thinking one was the best and then I would hear the next one and it would be even better :-)
For obscure how about "Ho! Ho! Ho! (Who'd Be a Turkey at Christmas)" or "Ticking"?

Most people who think Elton is over rated have probably not listened to the obscure album tracks. That's where so much of the best stuff is.
My requests:
"All The Nasties"
"We All Fall In Love Sometimes"

Hey David, could you give tracks from 'Rock Of The Westies' a go :D?

"Empty Sky"?! I thought that I, and maybe Elton's mother were the only ones that knew that album still was in existence....
And "Last Episode"?! My goodness! I have found a kindred spirit.......
Elton, overrated???? Oh, well. I have to remember that there are people that believe in Santa!!
Keep up the good work!!

Feel free to transpose 'Rain' to C :D.
