I'm 14 and I'm still growing, so I wanna know, would doing these make my arms shorter? my elbows hurt a little when I do these. just wanna know If I'm not fucking up my arm growth plates
@02chevyguy: tricep extensions are less effective depending on how you do it. People tend to push their elbows forward and outward and they dont push up veetically with their triceps. This puts less stress on the triceps and more on the elbows. Skullcrushers are done on the floor or bench, so its easier to control the weight and lift straight up with your triceps instead of putting stress on the elbows.
@02chevyguy Yeah man. I've been doing lots of exercises like this on the floor. It's a lot safer too since it only allows so much arm movement. You shouldn't need to go any further than the floor or you risk injury. I go all around youtube for exercise vids, but this is the main guy to me scooby1961
@wumtan Thanks for the reply. Tthey'll be part of my routine from now on. However, what is the difference between these and tricep extensions (which I do sitting in a chair)?
If you change the position of your arms by just a few degrees you eliminate the resting position that you would otherwise have when you fully extend your arm -> more efficient workout. A great tip for advanced tricep workers learned it from Jeff Cavaliere's videos.
@jamiebenson1 Warm up with lighter weight arms farther back and flare your elbows out a little more(if all else fails then just do the exercise on a decline bench that will take all the stress from the elbows and just lash it on the triceps.
@DubDiCeDIZzLe only chuck norris, since that does not exist. If by wanting to get big you mean look muscular and manly, you will have to work out a little more then just one summer.
i used to do this with a barbell, and my elbows always used to click and crunch as they bent, not really sure why that tends to happen.. but now watching this and now doing it with dumbbells, so much better, thanks a lot man, keep up the good work
i realised my elbow always hurt when i did these but that was because my arms were completely straight like this ( | ), BUT if you put your arms at a slight slant so it should like this ( / ) NOT ( | ) then the pressure is off of your elbows !
@AAAKKSergio The difference is that when you use dumbells, the weight is more focused on each arm individually. When you use a z-bar, the weight is more balanced between both arms and is basically less stress on each arm. For best results, i'd use dumbells to get more work done on each arm.
great exercise i do these every time i use dumbbells, which isn't all that often these days with work and all plus i train martial arts stuff and yoga when i can
i try to change the exercises every week but i dunno how to combine them... So maybe you can give me a hand with some tips what exercises should i do?
Why are there no programs on cable that offer the type of informative and how too physical fitness knowledge you do. There are yoga, arobics, belly dancing and, tae bo and everything else. I think you'd be the perfect show host!!
Can you do these in the same way you do them with a curl bar, where instead of extending up over your chest, you extend out away from your head backwards?
I do a barbell skull crush then go into a dumbell skull crush to triceps press.. its and awesome super set and really gets you panting and he blood flowing.
@mexica27 Warm-up properly is a true art. I remember when I thought I was warming up right and got joint pain. There are several warm-up techniques, the most used is the light weight-fast reps style which is not very good. I prefer to do 3 warm up sets. 1 light 12 reps, 1 light-moderate, 10 reps, and 1 acclimation set moderate-heavy 8 reps. This can even help you do the exercise with more weight than general.
@ moviedude22: try keeping your elbows as close as posible to your body. the exercise will be harder but you'll evoid injury. also when doing these types of triceps exercise (use a bar, for example), use the same position of your elbows
@EvanPwnsYou I would but no. I tend to ignore them altogether except for dips, because once dumbells are introduced after a couple days the pain sets in.....
@ScottHermanFitness Uhm, sorry to disagree but the more vertical your elbows are, the more pressure there is on your joints. I get those too and i'm sure i use good form because i have a professional who helps out.
@moviedude22 Also, your elbows may be too far from each other, so you end up lifting the weight in a weird angle that puts a strain on your inner elbow ligaments. Bring your elbows in closer to your head so that your humerus are parallel.
@moviedude22 Putting ice packs and muscle rub on your elbows after working out can help. So can some anti-inflammatory medication like ibuprofen or naproxen.
@moviedude22 You are probably doing to much weight or going to fast, start of light and slow and let your shoulder get used to the movement, thats what I did .
In my current gym I have to use and EZ bar to do skull crushers - I do a heavy set using then EZ bar and then a lighter set right after using this dumbbell technique - three times
Although at my old school gym there was a proper skull crusher bar!?! Anyone else seen/got one of them at their gym?
a nice variation to this exercise is to have your upper arm slightly lower, as in more parallel to your body, it makes the tricep have to work harder as it is never 'resting' as you have to really control on the positive movement :D
How much do you weigh?

Triceps.
It is like a curl for your triceps, they are one of my favourite exercises for triceps.
Best with dumbbells, like in this video, so you know you are working each arm equally.
