  • is there a portal 2 map anyone made?

  • easier to make a box, then klick make hollow

  • Hey if your done using it to record, could I have my toaster back?

  • why my camera cannot move

  • hmm i cant find any skybox textures. anyone know? :P

  • How do you move the camera and select walls at the same time...?

  • I can't see the textures

  • thnxs man it worked (why wouldnt it :P)

  • nvm,its was box instead of vox,my bad

  • hey there,i typed tools/toolsskyvox and it came with nothing but toolsareaportal,i clicked tf2 at the source sdk menu, why's that?

  • Do you ever mention the nodraw and dev textures? In good maps its pretty necesarry to use the nodraw or the map will render all sorts of things and ultimately lag the game (I only know how to use hammer for L4D so sorry if I'm wrong)

  • i have portal 2 tools for steam how do i get tf2

  • @shadowolfirex22 same way you got authoring tools for portal 2, its just called Source SDK.

this will also let you develop stuff for portal 1, half life 2, counter strike source, day of defeat source and any other valve source game.

  • What?! This isn't TF2, theres no hats!

  • @Shaeam this is an old video 2008

  • Hey Man,

What does a skybox actually do?

  • Thank you very much man, im making a map right now as we speak, now, i ask, do the npc's for like... the ai's automaticaly move to the enemy spawn point? Or do you need to make crap loads of waypoints?

  • is 2 by 2 box the size of a scout?

  • For me the walls are a wireframe, not a color. I have tf2. HALP

  • @Computergeew Watch the first video again, and pause the start of it and read the annotations, it explains your problem.

  • @mattdawg420 Eh, ok. I had my annotations off :P

  • @mattdawg420 Oh and, do you know how to make a platform that moves the player? I need a tut on that to dump idle people into a pit of death. :P

  • @mattdawg420 got the same Problem, like Vomputergeew, but there is nothing in the annotations....

  • @mattdawg420 you must get so pissed trying to explain this to everyone :P

  • @Computergeew -.- view/3d textured polygons

  • @Computergeew hi i readed your problem i can help you listen go in the map and then go to view then press on shaded texture polygons and thats all

and yes first check 3d view then change to 3d shaded texture polygons

  • HOW DO YOU KEEP A BRUSH SQUARE WHILE STRECHING?

  • I am going to need four scatter gun bullets

  • excuse me but can you tell me how you actully get/get to the map maker? i have tf2 on steam ...tough i dunno if theres other ways to get it but any way i cant find it... heh can yah helps?

  • @ginny56 It is under on of the tabs on the right, maybe download or something? I don't have steam on this PC (my gaming laptop is "borken" atm)

But you download Source SDK. You run that program after its downloaded and you run Hammer from that and then select TF2 from the drop down box for the selection of map type.

  • @ginny56 at the search bar, click on Games, then click on tools. then install Source SDK.

  • @ginny56 I know I'm a bit late and you've probably either found the map builder or given up by now, but it's under "tools" in "downloads". I think. It's something like that. And you find it on a long page of possible downloads that is accessed from a dropdown box. It took me a while to find it, too.

  • hey maatt i got a lil prob cus i select all 4 walls and the ceilling and then click the (toogle texture application) then i did found the skybox but when i clicked apply nothing changes u know why?

  • the mousewheel for me doesn't enlarge my view, it scrolls the grid up and down. Is there any way to change this? Im trying to make the floor bigger but can't see the full thing in the grid now.

  • hey cool tuts the only thing i could point out is that you should talk a little louder but still a great tutorial

  • Hey, whats the command for a portal/teleporter?

  • @magxsnyp3r I dont have any handy info, as it takes a bit of programming from what I recall. You can't just make one, you have to link them and all that. But the info is somewhere on the Valve Dev wiki.

  • @mattdawg420 you should make these videos in to a playlist.

  • can someone tell me how to see the map and not just the wire frame in the camera view

  • @goldspike4 Watch video one again and read the annotations at the start of it.

  • @mattdawg420 thanks but i already figured it out like a day ago

  • My block does not start with a texture, it is just wireframe. :/

  • @Sinic4

Oh wait nevermind. I didnt notice the BIG box at the begininning of chapter 1

  • @Sinic4 hehe The day I put that box up at the start of that video, I saved like 10 messages a day XD

  • @Sinic4 same here

  • @NukeWarfare Watch video one again and read the annotations at the start of it.

  • @Sinic4 Watch video one again and read the annotations at the start of it.

  • LOLZ .. 4 people actually clicked dislike on this video? Really? Why?

  • @mattdawg420 maybe they clicked on this out of curiosity and where like wtf is this. *dislike*

  • @PIVOTgillyPIVOT I guess so but no reason to dislike something you don't understand that you searched for I suppose. But oh well, some people get off on the thumbs down button I guess.

  • @mattdawg420

Perhaps they don't agree with your style of making a map.

  • @DarthHarbl This isn't the end all style of making a map. This is how to use the darn thing 101 :) Later in the last chapter I show some of the other methods, but again the remakes I have done do cover a bit more of all of that.

  • @mattdawg420 its up to seven now

  • @mattdawg420 Hey In my thing you know the 4 squares camera, top, right and left or watevs, i have 3 camera screens and only one right screen

  • @mattdawg420 Because they were dropped on their heads by their adopted parents.

  • C-C-C-COMBO HELP. thank you.

  • @EpicGamer321 Ya-ya-ya YOUR Welcome!

  • ok, so the box we're making is the skybox? because most tf2 maps arent just big boxes

  • @goombaguy2 yeah watch all of the series and you will find the skybox tutorial in there. I think its even the next one.. patience young jedi..

  • My four boxes are different order, so i find it harder to figure out which once you used :/

  • Slower pls..(:

  • @superaybo sorry, I try to keep it slow. What you will want to do is pause it at each step. Listen to the video and at each step pause it and do the step yourself. Although eventually one of these days I am releasing a DVD with all these done in a remade format that will have text and all that.

  • Another question that I didn't know where to put. How do I make a sound that plays in a BIG radius (but not the whole map), that is quite loud and does not get quieter the further away you get. I have messed around with 'ambient_generic' and I can get my sound to work and everything, but volume 10 is quite quiet and it gets even quieter as you get further away, also, the only radius shape I can get is a sphere, is there a way to make it square/rectangular?

    Thank you in advance

  • @chaziscool1092 you are on the right track, but as far as I know only sphere's have a radius. I imagine you could try to select another shaped tool but think you have to use what you found already.

  • @mattdawg420 OF COURSE, I feel stupid now for not thinking radius=circular. Maybe using a brush? Is that possible? I might look into it further, but I'll probably not bother, because my friends don't like me making really technical maps for TF2 :D Thanks anyway!

  • @chaziscool1092 tbo I only know that cause I spen about 7 years at a CAD firm doing the IT work for them, but also learned how to use DataCAD and thus how to draw houses. That being said, I had to re-remember way too much about geometry that I had repressed in my brain, lol. And I think you could try it with a brush. Never know till you try :)

  • hey i put the skybox texture but it didnt change

  • @clego1music watch the video closely, maybe you have the wrong texture mode selected. The video doesn't cover much about the texture tool but sounds like you have it on a selection type mode instead of an apply type mode.

  • No I just made my map a little too big haha

  • @FuzzySnuckums lol one of my first maps was like that. If you have plans for all the space go for it :) But I found normally most maps can be made in 1/4th the size of what you had intended to use sometimes. But as far as I know, there isn't a way to make it go faster. But perhaps there is, I just don't know the keyboard command offhand if there is one.

  • how do you make the camera go faster

  • @FuzzySnuckums hmm you go into Z mode and then use the WASD keys to move around. I assume it might be faster in the video in the sense that the PC I used had a very top end video card. Is it laggy when you zoom around perhaps?

  • i like your voice or...i just liek the voice talkin and the vid, its helpful for my new dedicated server but where do i save it?

  • Hey thanks :) I wish I could find more voice work these days. I can do different characters as well, but tried to have a nice friendly you are sitting next to me approach when doing this series :) If you have a server that is setup to do TF2 stuff, the admins will tell you where to put it. I think there is a directory you just FTP the file into, and then it should work. But you need to do some mods to the ini file to know to load that map and such. There is a wiki out there somewhere.

  • @Banjokazooie42 Hi, I was wondering about dedicated servers. When you go to tools in steam it says "Source Dedicated Server". Does that mean you can get a dedicated server free???

  • @Hadyy13 No, you have to pay a hosting company to host the server if you want a 24/7 dedicated server. There are ways to use your own PC but it wouldn't be dedicated unless thats all that the PC did and it was on 24/7. But even then home ISP will only handle like 5-7 people or so before it gets too laggy to play. But hosting prices have come down quite a bit these days.

  • what is the materail called?

  • i think it was under brick and the grey part was under concrete I think. If you type in tyings like wood, it pulls pul various types. Same thing with glass and other types. I just used what I had selected at the time, not suggested as the material you choose to use but that is up to you.

  • That is covered in a later video when I talk about how to break them down from a single box. But thanks for the input. For now, I want them to place a few things to get familar with it and some of the tools. But yes, making a box is easier.

  • Im having a problem i hoped you could help me with: When you create a simple box it comes out textured, but... when i do the same thing its wireframe! Why does it do that? Plz answer i need you knowledge.

  • go to first vid and read.

  • Thats skudwerd, yes read the annotations on the first video.

  • nvm i fixed it

  • hey i think my hammer is glitched up can somone help me heres what happens every time i click to try to create a box insted of makeing the box it moves the whole screen no matter what screem (x,z) (x,y) (y,z) (camra) can somone plz help?

  • Thanks man!

  • do u know where u can download this software

  • right off of steam, you need to down load sdk, sdk base, sdk orange box in the tools tab (these things are free)

  • wat do u mean by sdk sorry i am not good at computer stuff

  • If your not good at computer stuff then you should not learn this :/ Sorrry :(

  • Source SDK can be downloaded off Steam. If you want to make Team Fortress 2 maps, buy TF2 and download SDK and follow this video.

  • the thing thats called sdk..

  • @pivotguy22 all that? I only downloaded the sdk source and I'm having no trouble at all (in fact I could have skipped this chapter lol)

    Whats in downloading the others?

  • @pivotguy22 it is source SDK and not anything else right i know this is old but still

  • @MasterSam911 im not sure, things have changed since last year

  • @MrZoom619 in steam goto tools and download the Source SDK to get the program

  • use Source SDK

  • do you mind if i add you to steam? i have a couple questions and it would be nice to instant im through steam

  • I do but I can't be bothered when I am in steam as I busy in a game doing something or working getting the last part of the DVD finished. But just post here and I check it often, and that way others can read the comments and get extra hints.

  • o ok, i figured it out anyway thank you though

  • Glad you got it going.

  • i still have the same problem i am going to make a video and show it to u do u have skype if not can u download make account and add Holan12 because i can send you the video via skype k?

  • Well, try this. Make a new map, and follow this video step by step and make the same thing I am making and see if you have the same problem. If you want to show me a video, just post it to youtube here and I can see it.

  • what ur steam name? im getting sick of going to youtube and commenting

  • my steam name is the same as my youtube name mattdawg420 .

However, I can't really help you outside of here, if I am in Steam, I am busy playing a game or working on finishing the DVD of these tutorials. Plus, the comments here help people smart enough to read them to find the help they need. It is as close to a FAQ on youtube as I can get. Although sadly, I get asked the same questions alot if you read them, heh. It gets kind of funny in a sad way heh.

  • ok so yea when you say to enclose the map do u mean to just put a box around it any specific material it has anything what?

  • Yep, just enclose the map so that it is in a box, doesn't matter what material you use. With the skybox trick however, your enclosed room will look like it is outside at least. But either way, all maps are enclosed.

  • yea it was probably it wasent enclosed let me try it i will post another comment but my respawn points weren't touching the floor XD

  • Yeah, I was guessing it was that one, because the respawn points thing usually still allows the map to work, but sometimes people get stuck to the floor or spawn in walls or weird things happen. Whereas, with an unclosed map, the map just will not work. I like to think of the blackness as the void of space, and your map is the spaceship. Can't have a single crack out into space, or the ship goes boooom.

  • ok its in the game but when i make a server and try to start it it just brings up the main menu dont try to go in game or anything just brings me back to the main menu how can i fix that?

  • You did one of the fata flaws of maps likely. Either your map isn't enclosed (which the 2nd video explains) or you let your respawn points touch the floor. They must hover, or it won't work. But it sounds more like the first thing.

  • 20,000 th view

  • Congrats! You get a digital cookie :)

But seriously, that is pretty remarkable, glad I have ben able to help so many people!

  • Hey Mattdawg You know on the orange maps with the ramps going out of spawn how do i make that?

  • Well not sure exactly what they did to make theirs, but you can make a basic block and stretch it really long then rotate it to where it has about a 30 degree slope or so and angle it and run the prim into the and through the ground if it looks better that way.

  • A question, I select the floor and try to make the floor larger, like in the tutorial, is there a step I might be missing to make it larger?

  • Hmm not sure what you are missing there. Maybe you aren't selecting it, you have the wrong tool in use? Maybe you have the texture or some other tool selected when you try to enlarge it?

  • ok :(

  • TF2 on steam is only like 20 bucks, and you get the editor for it as well with all the stuff needed to make your own maps. And from time to time, Steam has insane sales where its like $10 for TF2. At either price, it is worth it, but more worth it at $20 so you can play it now and not wait a few months till a sale happens.

  • aaah ok Thank

  • Thank You

What me im Look: error maps/map.bsp has weong version number (571084155 should de 30)???

Help how map tell me plz????

  • hmm that is weird.. try updating steam and hammer maybe? Also try a new map that is just a respawn point in a box room or something basic and try that. Also, make sure your map name doesn't have spaces in it.

  • aaah i not steam :(

  • Wait, how are you using Hammer if you don't have Steam?

  • Valve's Map Editor Hammer

  • But Valve uses Steam I am not sure how you have it instealled without Steam. Unless it really isn't TF2, but a HL2 mod with TF2 on it perhaps?

  • i im not hl2 , tf2

i im yes hl , cs 1.6, tfc

  • That is why you are having problems. This is TF2 not TF1 :( Some stuff might carry over, but this tutorial shows how to do TF2. I haven't even played TFC :(

  • Good job matt. very helpful and is perfect as a first-timer instructional video.

    5*'s

  • Thanks very much for the 5 stars! And, yeah that is what I was shooting for, a video that felt like you were a friend that came over to the house that wanted to know how to make makes in Hammer.

  • hey i fixed i sorry for the random ?'s i always watch the video i ask a ? then all the sudden its fixed lol. sorry

now are you going to make a tutorial nine like water and teleports?

  • There is a contract that was signed for me to remake the videos on youtube, and also do a cap the control point video for a DVD that is to be published when its done. The next disc in the series will cover water and adv things and likely payload.

  • I fixed it thx.

but now when i go into entites it dosnt choose the character spawns... (like the bodies where they spawn)

    Why is this?

  • Not sure what you did to change the default. You can usually save, close Hammer and reload and sometimes it fixes that. Or you can change the text to respawn and just hit enter when the right words come up.

  • video=awesome easy and fun 2 learn...

but how does ur walls have texture when mine dont when i put the mthere why?

  • Thanks for the feedback (I hope when you say awsome you mean 5 star all the videos awesome hehe)

And as far as your problem, re watch video 1, right at the start, read the annotations. Good luck!

  • how can i make a capture point open a door instead of end the game???

  • @jpearson127 I have been working on making a HD version of the capture the control point video but its going to be on the commercial dvd my pusblisher is going to release once I finally get it done. But still unsure when exactly that is going to get done, but if you subscribe you will be notified!

  • i spawn a model of a character (heavy's best cause he's biggest) then change till you get the size you want

  • how do u load the maps u made?

  • I believe you get it on a server.

  • If you want to load a map, make sure you have compiled it by pressing F9, and making sure it has no holes that let the outside of the map leak into your map area.

After you do that, save it into your TF2 map folder, and go into a tf2 server. If you do not find it in the map selection, start a server on any map, and use your console (~ key) and look for the proper command to choose a map's directory, and then run it.

    -Locke

  • If you want to load the map for testing purpose only, and plan to work further on it, just go the File at the top and press "Run Map"

  • whould this be the same on css?

  • Basically. 'cept CSS has different textures, entities, etc.

  • ive made a map with it selected on css, i need it on tf2 to test... can i do that?

  • i dont think that's possible kuz they're two different branches of the hl2 engine and there may be incompatible entities- but if i'm wrong i apologize and please let me know

  • The texture tool has many modes. Theres select to pick one, and apply to add the one you have selected. You have to play around with each mode until you understand what is gong on there. You likely have the select mode up or something instead of apply.

  • hey when im in hammer, i dont have solid objects, it is just a wire frame. like yours are solid gray and u can easily tell how the map looks. mine is just wires

  • Watch the first part of Chapter 1 again. I put up some text in caps at the start of the video explaining what to do.

  • How About A Tutorial On Math,Timer and all the other entities needed to make a map

  • Actually, I am in the research and plotting phase of covering that in the 2nd DVD that is to be released, since it covers the more advanced aspects of mapping such as these. On the first disc, I explain how to do the Capture the Control point which touches on this. I have 2 more chapters 2 finish and then some minor touchup work and the first disc should be ready soon. I have knocked out another chapter earlier this week, so 2 to go and it will be in production.

  • 2 things

1.please tell me when you finish the chapter on that

2.i got a new graphics card, so i can play 3X better then before :P

  • What is the point of putting in the skybox?

  • A skybox makes it look like you are outside. All maps have to be incased in a box of some sorts. So, if you put a skybox in, you can create the illusion that you are outside. It renders as you move when you look up, instead of just being a flat graphic painted on the ceiling and walls.

  • what i found easier if you didnt make ur ceiling in CH.1 . U can just do your walls

floor and copy your flooraas the ceiling when you stretch them out

  • Yeah that is easier if you are going straight into making a skybox level. I just used the first chapter for basic prim layout. But you are right, you can save a step if you are going straight for the skybox and do it as they suggested.

  • yeah and to me too

  • What is your question or problem?

  • Comment removed

  • i dont have those brick matrials, i typ in tools/tools/skybox but i didnt get anything, help :(

  • its tools/toolsskybox

There is no extra slash after the second tools

  • thanks i got it, but one more thing, when im in hammer and im useing the 3d thing and looking around useing the "WASD" keys, my walls are black and outlined with green, and yours are more of a rocky typ thing, how do i get mine to do that?

  • LOL.. no one ever reads the comments as I have answered that question before, at least 2 to 3 times a week heh. But basically, you click View at the top and select Textured Mapped Polygons. By default, it runs in Mesh mode, which looks like what you described. No worries though, everyone has this problem when they start. Just I get surprised by this question ever other day or so ;)

  • hehe, sorry about that :D

  • No worries :) You are not the first nor will you be the last hehe. I still blame Hammer for making that the default... I mean wtf were they thinking?

  • I placed the skybox I think... It doesn't show up and textures for the walls don't show up. It's just a bunch of green/red/blue boxes. Help me if you can. T.T

  • Be default, Steam uses wireframe for the polygons, so you need to click View I believe it is and select something like Textured Mapped Polygons. That should fix it. I have answered this same type of question dozens of times, but no one reads the comments :(

  • Oh.

Sorry for bothering you with that question then. :[

    Amazing guide though. :D

  • No worries, sorry if I sounded harsh, it is just I literally answer that question several times a week :) But I don't mind answering it, as it is a gripe I have about Hammer's default settings. Glad you enjoy the tutorials, and happy mapping!

  • chapt 1 is no longer available

  • Um..Excuse but I understand everything now but one thing....How are u applying the texture|wallpaper?

  • ok, two steps down under the block tool there is a little box called apply texture, it looks like a brickbox, select the desired texture then click the brickbox.

  • do you also hav a part on the dvd for making rough ground? because im working on a map but i need to know so i can make the map not look newbish

  • I think that type of stuff might be covered in the 2nd volume as it falls into the advanced techniques not covered in the current series. That being said, the main trick to it is to use multiple types of brush shapes to create hills and valleys. In the tutorials here I mainly use the square brush, but try using some of the curved and rounded shapes and stick just a hump up on the ground and do it in multiple places with multiple heights and smooth it out a bit.

  • do you hav a tutorial for control points and gates?

  • Not on youtube. But the DVD that is being worked on will have control points.

  • what exactly is a skybox? does it show an actual sky when you play it or w/e?

  • Yep... it renders as you move so that it looks like an open space instead of just a texture.
