The death camps only got into serious production-line mass murder techniques after it became obvious to German generals that the war was no longer winnable. The price of their lack of integrity was much greater than the destruction of Dresden and the death of 25,000 Dresdeners. It was the inhuman treatment and murder of millions of innocent people.

Their awareness of what they had done to civilians in Russia made them terrified of being captured by the Red Army. They placed their own defence before that of Dresdeners. Fact 2. Dresden would not have been bombed had German Generals had the courage to concede defeat when they realised the war was no longer winnable. Von Paulus did in Russia. Von Cholitz did in Paris when he refused to burn the city. Steiner did when he refused to mount a pointless counter-attack against the Russians. His troops just were defeated. German soldiers stood and fought very courageously. US and english troops who did what they still do in todays wars: Kill civillians during airstrikes.

It had no strategical function and Winston Churchill was extremly lying when he mantained the opposite. A specific request from Antonov for Air Support at the ARGONAUT conferences to 'Paralyse the junctions at Berlin & Leipzig'; over 100 industrial works in Dresden which were producing arms; and a railway system which was ferrying troops to the Eastern Front all sound like 'strategic functions' to me.
I do not condone what happened, but wish that a few people would get their facts straight. Dresden was a city of major importance AT THE TIME.

But even British and American historians does contradict the official versions of this days in your country.The war was almost over and Dresden full of refugees. Especially the British bomber were searching the center, the oldtown of Dresden, not the industrial parks outside the town. Deep flying aircrafts were hunting surviving women and kids who tried to escape from fire on the riverside of the "Elbe".
