  • Good shit, a bit unfair though because the flex is a 212 and it's under a computer desk, which looks to be like the perfect size for it, so its getting "boxy" and the Mesa is played through a 412 with the dude right next to it. Obviously if you have a 2000 dollar amp with another amp that costs as much as your cab...I think the Mesa will win. Not knockin the flextone though, with some equing and studio work it could sound just like the Mesa

  • I actually prefer the Flextone here...

  • I have a several tube amps and love them all, but I am still impressed with my Flextone III as well. It sounds especially good with my Les Paul.

  • tubes = tone.

  • Mesa Boogie is metal, clean, and everything in between go to Mesaboogie go to the artist section see kirk Hammett from Metallica, John Petrucci, Andy Timmons, and others Kirk loves Mesa! He said, only Mesa can he the tones .See for yourself what the Masters have to say

  • @fddustin sorry man but kirk use's randall since 07 :P but he used mesa for about ten years and before that a jcm800 mod....

  • Mesa wins

    FATALITY

  • sound is diff cuz camera mic is closer to Mesa than the Line 6, you can hear it, of co8urse a cheap vid cam speaker will sound better right in front of a 4x12 where the 2x12 is way over under a table...duh

  • sound is diff cuz camera mic is closer to Mesa than the Line 6, you can hear it

  • Haha, the Line 6 is like a scrawny punk acting tough. The Mesa is a really tough guy acting tough.

  • Line 6 blows in comparison. No balls.

  • I think this is an exelent video to compair sounds, and I see all this guys bitching about the line 6 tubes or digital. DUDES for 2,500 - 3,000 bucks more of course the MESA it's got to sound better lol.

All I can say is, talking shit about a Flextone iii XL READ THE MANUAL play with it I've owned mine for 7 months and every day I learn something new with this amp, we do covers from Tool, Alice in chains, RHCP, STP etc and I have all these different tones in a click of a button

  • @mikebike74 I really dont think even expert audiophiles would be able to tell the difference in a double blind study.

The tones in this vid do vary slightly through my pro studio headphones but than can be adjusted. The line 6 has more bass in this vid and the mesa has more top end presence. Easy fixed.

  • @mikebike74

I've used the Flex for about 3 years myself, gigging regularly and even used it for recording. It constantly sounded thin and compressed (boxy, if you will) when I would go back and listen to live shows and such. After shutting off the Cabinet Modeling and not using the compressor all while pulling up the volume a bit, this thing now rivals my Fender Twin! The Hiwatt model is amazing on this..as for distorted tones, I use good pedals ;-) TS9->Fulltone OCD-> Keeley BD2!

  • like mesa more out of two

  • i own a flextone 3, and i was just wondering, which amp you find to be more versatile, and which one has better clean tones in your oppinion? thank you, great vid

  • @bigtom737

I've used the Flextone for about 3 years now in my funk band. Clean tone is pretty essential to me, and I've used the Hiwatt Model exclusively (its the 'red' channel on Jazz/Clean spot). You could really push the drive a bit before it breaks up..very very crispy and full. I'd take off the speaker cab simulator though, the Celestions are good as is. (to get it off, hold down the amp model button and turn to Line6 Clean)..kill the compressor & add the noise gate as well!

  • IS there anyway I can conveince u to post your settings for the mesa? Sounds clean. Just got me a 3 channel duel recto and still trying to find my sound

  • Mesa delivers a better tone overall. Line 6 is just a dressed up speaker.

  • ey man ... EQ that you used for the Flextone III Line ...?

  • gotta go with the real thing... I bought Line 6 and sent back RIGHT AWAY... so cheap compared to the read deal Rectifier

    Mark V sounds amazing also...

Save up and buy an amp that truly does something great instead of something that does a lot in an average way

  • i think you can´t compare the roadking and the flextone because the roadking costs much more and is actually worth the money

  • can you give me te settings of the flextone ?? PLEASE

  • One's processed with a little reverb delay and one isn't. It's all preference. All the "dry heads" and "lead singers" will want the Mesa the rest with ear and taste will want the Line 6.

  • hey bro. after watching your vid i got convinced, but i realize theres a XL and Plus, whats the difference? is it size? and whats your opinion on the fact that they stop making this ampm, i need this amp for the dual and triple rectifier, sounds pretty close

  • wait...was the flextone also going through the 4x12? even though the flextone was farther away from the camera (volume seems much lower) i think it sounded pretty good compared to the mesa.

  • whats yours settings on flextone?

  • If this is only using the mic in the camera than it is not a fair comparison. the position of the camera relative to the speaker was completely different for the two amps. Try doing this again with the amps miced.

  • Thanks for the post....proves what i've been saying all along...that u can tell the difference (even on utubes compressed transmission) between the quality of an amplifier.

  • mesa blows that out of the water.

  • hey man, whats the footswitch like for the flextone? is there a noticable delay in going from say a clean patch to a dirty patch?

  • The floorboard controller is great. The amp is very average without it. There is no delay in switching from clean to overdrive channels its instantaneous

  • what flextone settings do you use here?

  • can you send me this song's tab man?? Please !! :)

    Amazing riff!

  • Afraid I dont have any riffs dude, otherwise I would send them. We dont tend to tab stuff out, we just teach other the riffs at rehearsals

  • ha! i see now, you've posted more vids! not just the metal!

    sorry, i'm retarded

but i can play more than 3 chords. 4 is more than 3, isn't it?

  • No worries man. I play a pile of different styles, hence the need for several amps and a ton of effetcs!

  • This video made me buy my mesa boogie roadster! I realy like the more punchier tone that you get from a mesa!

    (sry for bad english)

  • Line 6 should pay you for this, guys ;) Their own demos just suck. I'm sure that lots of people will seriously consider buying flextone after watchin your vid, I'm thinking about it too

  • me too. i'm looking at one, researching on net.

personally a little disappointed with all the metal heads cranking the distortion!

would like to here the cleaner jazz and country sounds, with effects on them. search continues!

but thanks for posting, still good!

  • hi guys i own a line6 spider 3 and a gibson tom delonge es-333 and i want a tube amp Xd some help ?

  • Huge range of amps on the market, but advice would be dependant on what your planning on doing with the amp. i.e. music style, live use or studio/home use, number of required channels etc

  • thanks, so the 75 watts is definetly plenty loud and clear? I was thinking of buying an external cabinet if I ever needed it

  • Yeh i would say so. Should give u enough headroom for cleans and enough volume for lead work

  • is the flextone iii 1x12 able to cut it for gigging? Nice Playing by the way

  • Yup I would say its more than adequate for most gigs. Any ig where its not loud enough you would be miccing up your amp anyways

  • what pickups are you using?

  • guys spider 4 or flextone??

  • Spider valve is decent. I really like the flextone , its been great I won a flextone II which I bought about 8 years ago, its been gigged used for recording, rehearsals and home practice for years and has been very reliable. My bandmates both own flextone iii's which have a better interface and floorboard controller and sounds great aswell

  • i totally agree with that. was at the store today and tested some spiders and the flextone III. I personally find the spider valve pretty ugly. The flextone was nice. i'd prefer the flex. the gate sucks a bit when you get into highgain sounds and staccato playing. Think thats why you cannot boogie for that money.

  • mesa all the way

the line 6 sounds good but it cant stand vs the mesa

  • I agree with dante316a. The Flextone puts out a fantastic sound, especially for the price, but the Roadking has 10x more character.

  • LOL. LIVE road king would be more 3d sounding, flextone would sound very plain, one dimensional. Flextone is muddy on this video, it would be muddier live.

I've had mark IV and Rectifier, Mark IV was warm, fluid but not so thick, and it was much more generic sounding than my current amp - marshall. It wasn't responsive to guitar change as much as marshall.

It just depends on taste, I don't like mesa sound, especially buzzy-edgy-recto-modern sound(imo vintage was quite good but too loose sounding)

  • Man, close your mouth. Your bottom lip is so gross hanging out about a mile from your face.

  • lmao

  • The thing with Mesa's(I own a mark IV) is that the single note lines are soooo thick and full sounding, they fill up rooms. where as most amps are generic sounding and thin.

  • Flextone III XL

  • Road King > Line 6

  • Orange thunderverb 200< road king.

  • If I was in the audience I would not hear a difference. . but as a guitar player the Mesa has more fullness. But wonder what the diff would be if both were EQ'd the same? The Flextone is impressive and can be found used for 300 bucks or less. . and not as much weight to mess with for gigging.

  • the mesa of course sounds louder cause it is and you can't beat a tube amps tone but the line 6 does an amazing job of replicating boutique quality tones and it REALLY does justify it's pricetag unlike the mesa i would only pay that kind of money for bogner suhrs soldanos and other high end GOOD quality amps mesas and marshalls are just what everyone THINKS are the best cause they're the most popular names. not to say mesas are bad cause they aren't but they're not worth $1800 for a HEAD

  • in Russia new Mesa Triple Rectifier costs$3000, Roadking II - $5000

  • In Soviet Russia, Mesa Boogie buys you.

  • die

  • i lol'd great

  • @ketutscope Soviet Russia !?!?!? Are you fucking retarded?

  • Agreed. After owning a mesa I would say that is true. However two channel dual and triple rectifiers sound amazing!

  • mesa sound better but mostly because you cut the mids tu much on the line 6 , get similar eq settings and both will sound great !

  • mesa sounded a bit better but look at the price difference :p

  • sad to say.....

i liked the flextones sound better

    i find that very odd

  • Chck out Engl amps they blow these away!

  • yeh Engl are the best there is along with vox, vox and engl definitly blow these away

  • yeah, for like 3x the price you'd hope they would

  • Robin check out musicians friend, this Line 6 flextone sells for $699 the boogies are way overpriced. Boogies are over a $1400.00. You can Buy a Engl Screamer for around $1200. Hardly 3 times as much $ but they are 3 times more amp.Yes its more than the line 6 but the line 6 isnt a true amp. Do some research my friend.

  • the screamer is hardly an average of all ENGL's. in fact it's one of the most affordable. most of them are a lot more expensive than it. anyways, my point is that, though ENGL's would blow this amp away, it's an unfair comparison to make and the Flextone is a great modelling amp for the price.

  • amps are really all about what tone you want. avenge sevenfold uses line 6. Of course john petrucci uses mesa, Micheal angelo batio uses marshall, rusty cooley uses diamond, jeff loomis and chris broderick use ENGL, joe satriani uses peavey, steve vai uses carvin, but they all use some effect pedals too. its all abou what you play

  • Avenged Sevenfold uses Marshall JCM800's, not Lune 6. They have never uses Line 6's. The amp they used previously were Bogners.

  • Secondly I didn't say that Marshall amps sucks... Marshall Amps are awesome, I love them and I almosr choose the MG Series... BUT for metal, I'd go for a Mesa. I know that some metal guitarist use Marshall but they often modify them to be as they want...

I'm not there to say that Mesa are better than this one... Both are great, they are the best amps ever, but you have your opinion, I have mine, you got to respect that too!

PS You also forgot to mention Paul Gilbert and Doug Aldrich

  • well mesa by themselves arent very good for metal also. they are very reliant on pedals such as compressors, reverb, NS, etc. I own a triple rect and i was not satisfied with the dry tone when i first bought it so i bought a BOSS ME-50 but even with everything on the me-50 im still not completely satisfied

  • No surprise , Flextone lose.

  • The tube amp sounds better

  • Bullshit- I can name 10 (or more) guitarists that use stock Marshalls that have killer tone. You might not prefer the Marshall sound, but that is a different issue.

  • Marshall amps are fuckin shit guys. They are nowhere near the quality of mesa, framus, or peavey. They dont capture any of the nuances that make rock/metal guitar great. That XGODFATHAX dude is a fucking dumbass haha. Get some taste for tone asshole

  • Ur just a plain idiot Marshall made the rock sound.

  • i have a taste for tone, and tone is personal preference, you cant tell me what amps are better cus different amps sounds better to anyones ears, some people like mesa, and some like marshall, but marshall is THE rock sound, its personal preference ass wipe, and for your info, i happen to sell mesas aswell as marshall and i always say, i reccomened the mesa and the randalls for metal, and the marshalls and the voxs for a good old rock tone, its preference, you troll.

  • i play punkrock/poppunk like Tom Delonge what would you recemand me for an amp

  • Well, For A Budget For Under £200, Then An Orange Crush 30R Might Be The Best, Has A Good Crunch For Pop Punk, Or The Line 6 Spider (My Practice Amp For When I Want To Keep Things Quiet) Is Good For Modelling Sounds. The Vox DA20 Is Also Another Good Modelling Amp And has Good Crunch For Pop Punk, Or A Marshall MG (Be Careful, Marshall Budgets Are Not That Good) But The Very Best Amp I Would Say Is The Hughes And Kettner Edition Blue 30 DFX, Try Some Amps At Your Local Music Shop.

  • i have a LINE 6 spider 75 watt i'm looking for a tube amp (head and cabinet

  • Pm me for some suggestions as the comment wall isnt the best place, ill send you some links if you tell me exactly what you want tone wise. So tube and stack, for cheap and not expensive, look at the bugeras, nice amps, pm me for some suggestions.

  • You should be slapped for saying john petrucci plays marshall. I challenge you to name one marshal player that is better than jp! LOL good luck

  • Okay then, John 5.

  • Micheal angelo batio uses marshall .

  • why do people still play poppunk lol, I hope your like 15, anyway i think the only thing that matters is that you buy tube so you get the right response for palm muted parts. Tom wasnt too concerned about tone considering his guitar offers no tone control or pickup selection

  • It´s all a question of taste. Many prefer Marshall while others prefer Mesa. In my opinion nothing beats the Mark Series from Mesa/Boogie the new mark V is a tone monster i think Mesa are nº1 and Engl follows.

  • yep, in my opinion too

  • If it were me i would go with a Raven, good for metal, good for all the heavy stuff. That Mesa's a good one tho.

  • YOU FUCKIN SUCK!!!!

  • stop sounding like n00b guitar players. marshall can do metal and so can mesa along with many other brands. obvioulsy it ultimately depends on the actual amp.

  • lol marshal is not ment for metal go away marshal boy

  • you must be the most retared person in the world do you realize that marshall is is one of the most used amps for metal and my marshall JVM and way more gain than any crappy mesa.

  • more gain doesn't matter..

  • fucking hell u dont need to cry about it u fucking baby getting all defensive, fucking internet warrior

  • i know more artist playing metal with mesa boogie than marshall... mesa is also one of the most used amp so stfu....

the most used amps are (not in order) mesa, marshall, peavey and fender

  • no you stfu what are you classifying as metal. emo dosent count you dumb cunt.

  • stfu im no emo at all...

im listening t Metallica, MEgadeth, All that remains, disturbed, killswitch engage, bulllet for my valentine, death and much more...

im classifing all these band in metal and if u dont ure just a noob who doenst know musical styles

ps all these bands are in different types of metal as: Trash Metal, Metal COre, Progressive MEtal, etc... i didnt wanted to classify them even more

  • THrash metalll!!!!

    Trash is Rap!!

  • and it doesnt sounds emo at all it sounds like Progressive metal noob...

and wtf to call me emo? u think tht hurts kid? COme on grow up, ure just so pathetic being a douche here... the only comment tht people wanted to know is which amp u think sound better thts all...

  • hey kevinharbour, name ten artists playing Mesa, i can name loads of marshall players, John 5, Slash, Zakk Wylde, David Gilmour, Jim Root, Kerry King, Mick Thomson, Billy Squier, Sergio Pizzorno, John Petrucci, Eric Clapton....do you really want me to embaress you by naming more cus i will, the only artists i have seen playin mesa is Tom Delonge and he is shite, only pop punk, now your stuff noob.

  • Tom Delonge, James Hetfield, Dave Grohl, Kurt cobain(played mesa boogie), Avril Lavinge, buckethead, bruce springsteen, Carlos santana, Joe trohman, Matt Tuck, patrick stump, and many many more play mesa boogie

  • Yeah But They Also Play...DUM DUM DUM Marshall, Santana, Mesa IS Way To Modern, And Its Not On His Gear List. Way more people play marshall and fender than mesa i will say that.

  • James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett from Metallica ( I know that Kirk has his Signature model but he used a lot of Mesa like the Mark IV and IIC+)

There's also John Petrucci, the guys from Killswitch Engage, Blasko of Ozzy Osbourne, Carlos Santana of course, and to respond you, Jim Root of Slipknot use Mesa, Dave Kushner from Velvet Revolver, Shaun Morgan from Seether and much more... and Petrucci don't play with Marshall WTF...

I'm going to make another comment because it's too long!

  • david gilmour? (plays hiwatt amps and fender twins almost his entire career he even has a sig hiwatt amp), JOHN PETRUCCI?????????????? dude comeon its very common knowledge petrucci plays mesa he has since his first studio album in 92' ... jim root plays orange...mick thompson plays rivera (he also has a sig amp by rivera) dude how bout you get your facts straight before just bashing something it just makes you look stupid but w/e its youtube u wouldnt be the first one

  • yes the jvm has way more unusable gain, and a very unnatural compressed voicing when cranked the only usable tones i had with mine (had it for 4 months) was gain at around 11' oclcok when the master was pushed ... so yeah it has a ton of "gain" that makes it sounds like a thin transistor amp when pushed past 3' oclock good job marshall ! an overpriced 4 channel version of the jcm2000 !

  • its a matter of opinion, my marshall has had none of the stuff you just mentioned, i personally do not like mesa, too modern, i like the old british sound and the nice fender cleans. enjoy your mes though bud :)

  • same to you man hope you have better luck with the jvm than i did greetings from New York!

  • cheers bud, greetings from swindon, Uk

  • Mesa are too modern???? Boogies are famous for a Fender clean but with more balls, 1970's isn't modern.

  • so now mesa steals tones, lol yeh mesa are unique xD

  • yeah because "slayer isnt metal" (sarcasm)

  • yeah children of bodom isnt either (more sarcasm)

  • niether is metallica (not sarcastic.....)

  • uhh yeah they are

  • Marshalls are amps, doesnt matter what they are for, Even Zakk Wylde himself said and i quote 'Metal, Blues, Rock Or Indie, Marshall does it all' Or maybe you wanna hear what Slash has to say? 'Marshall is fantastic for everything, wether it be rock, metal or for gettin pure tone, Nothing beats a Marshall'. Plus Kerry King Has A Signature Marshall Amp and he plays Metal, So think about what you say you unintelligant Cunt.

  • so now I have to buy marshall amps, because zakk wylde and slash say, that they like marshall?

    great argument...

i don't like marshall amps, that's my opinion. no matte what slash or zakk wylde or any other guitarist tells me.

  • i didnt say that. i was arguin over the fact that someone on this video said marshalls arent for metal, and i was merely pointing out they are made for anything so i used two metal guitar players and a classic rock player who uses marshalls as an example, so actually know what im replaying about before flaming it cus what you sed was utter stupid, though i agree you dont have to buy marshall but you sayin a childish comment, 'oh i have to buy marshal cus he says so' wah wah. lol think about it

  • but that's what it sounded like to me. so stop crying. and still not everyone loves or likes marshall. I never said marshall sounds like shit. I only said that in MY opinion there are better amps and it's all a matter of personal taste.

so cope with it or lock yourself in a room with your marshall amp

  • and if you dont like marshall amps, something must be wrong with you they have the best sound, easily the best sound, your not a true guitar player and many people would agree marshalls are the best all round amps, they sound better than mesa and orange etc, fenders are good but made more for classic rock, your argument is shite my friend, i will say no more so dont bother replyin as i cant be arsed to debate over youtube, now if you all excuse im, gunna go play with my sexy marshall :P

  • marshall is shit compared to mesa

  • marshall are a lot better than mesa IMO, and to my ears marshall has more pure tone, mesas good for more metal stuff.

  • as an owner of a mesa mark IV , dual rectifier and a marshall jcm 800 versatility goes hands down to mesa its not even a contest...the only advantage my marshall has over my mesas (this is the only reason i havnt sold it) is for that middy british rock flavor i get from it that i cant get from my mesa...and the marshall cleans ??? (atleast on the jcm800) are a joke sorry

  • dude xd the first marshall is made out of a fender bassman and there are fender amps who have a great highgain sound

  • the first marshall amp was made before the bassman came out, marshall just didnt releases there amps until after fender but marshall are now the biggest amp company in the world, i sell amplifiers and marshall, vox and orange are the biggest sellers, i reccomend the mesa for metal but not many people buy it surprisingly cus they say its only good for one thing.

  • I think the line 6 sounds a bit more transparent. You hear more of the strings through it and its also a bit tighter IMO.

The Boogie sounds huge, but it is a 4x12 and the camera man is standing right in front of it. Definitely a bit looser than the line 6.

Honestly, I'm very surprised at how close they are, and even moreso by how good the Flextone sounds.

  • great tone for both but i got to say line6 wins this battle

  • newbie....

the mesa has tubes and therefore must be ran louder to acheive decent to great tone. and because of the way it is mic'd/ the kind of mic used, it gives it a REALLY overly distorted sound which makes it sounds kind of bad. but the line6 lacks, punch, resonance, and presence and the overall "alive" feel of the mesa roadking IRL.

  • the mesa sounds much !! better the flextone has no balls

  • the mesa is more clearly.. thats what im think about

  • Mesa is definitely better

  • how to get that tone man,i really need the same one,if you dont have a problem, thanks great work, greatings from corfu greece

  • mesa just more trebly but fer the price of the each 2 fuck it

  • Flextone wins for me.

  • Mesa! Mesa...mesa que mas aplauda le mando le mando le mando la niña! za za za!!!!

  • jajajajaaja me dio risa esa wea za za jajajjaja

  • sounds like so much in flames..good tone..

  • mesa's got more crunch and btw that's a video, so you wouldn't hear that amount of differences in the sound which you would heard if you listened to both amps in real life. and also the flextone sound very mild, when mesa's got a cutting tone. of course tubes are better that processors))

  • Of course mesa sounds better...

  • mesa...

  • Mesa sounds better

  • i think the mesa sounds like a fart. they are both great amps, but i think that i would have to go with the flextone. for one, you can buy 6 flextones or one mesa. but thats just based on price. i use an hd 147 head and i can pretty much squeeze any tone out of that and my ibanez guitars.

  • In my opinion I think the mesa is better. It just sounds cleaner. I dont know if it's the placement of the camera or something else but in this vid the mesa winz.

  • The mesa has that nice crunch ive been looking for. I just wish i had $1800

  • Ok...i can make this riff sound similar even with a 100$ amp if the mesa volume is under 1 or 2....put it over 4 and you will listen the power..monsters like this are not made for home...the flextone is a pretty good amp for homeuse..but its digital...it lacks dynamics, power, and many thing that the mesa gives you...

  • Precisely

  • how setup flextone like this sound?

  • wow, the difference in sound isn't so big as the difference in price, nice comparison.

  • very similar, but in the end, I prefer a Mesa. The build quality is great and the tone is amazing. The Line 6 is also, but Line 6 is too digital based for me. It depends on amp modeling rather than holding it's own unique tone. Boh are great amps though.

  • what pedalboard are you using?

  • Errmm, in this video?

There is the King Controller for the Mesa Boogie Roadking, and the shortboard controller for the Line 6 Flextone III

  • ahah that is why that Mesa Boogie is awesome for gigs

    sounds sexy :]

    the Flextone matches up though

  • given the price difference, the line 6 definitely performed well even for being a fraction of the cost. im sure that the build quality of the mesa is more reliable but for sound they are both great.

  • I prefer Marshalls

    Nice vid!

  • lol cool vs. i like how the flextone can mimic the tone of popular "super" amps like MESA BOOGIE or MARSHALL amps

  • wathn a fxx do you have 2 road kings?

i wish i had one XD good playing

  • One is a Roadking one is a Tremoverb

  • You get what you pay for when it comes to guitar equipment.

  • I dont think people are putting to mind THE PRICES. Mesa is obviously going to win this, But for the money I would go for flextone. and especially the flextone if your only looking for a practice amp or small gigging amp. I mean, Like krankank put "Lol, a 350 doller amp vs a 3500 doller amp."

  • Roadking easy.. Line 6 sounds to compressed. Besides your playing the mesa dry, add some reverb or delay and will sound more lush

  • Both were dry to make the video as comparable as possible. But its not the best comparison in the world, it was just a quick video as we happened to have the two amps sitting side by side.

  • Definitely. You've also got to keep in mind that the mesa was pointed at the camera, and the flextone away from the camera, since the camera mic is what we're hearing.

    I'd say they're pretty similar.

  • mesa ftw

  • maybe im fucking crazy but the flextone sounds tits! its deeper than the mesa but then again it could be the settings, but from what i can tell, personally i prefer the line 6. nice upload bro

  • can you send me your patches so I can plug it into line 6 edit

  • Lol, a 350 doller amp vs a 3500 doller amp.

  • That mesa will be amazing at a gig volume
