love this song so much, but how come it cuts off loads of the talking bits and also how come it misses of of moritz's bridge verses? this is in relation to the soundtrack, did they make a longer version for the soundtrack? that was never done on stage?
While I do really like Blake Bashoff and Gerard Canonico as Moritz, neither can even compare to the emotional intensity John has. He's just fantastic.
i keep rewatching the ending, when they all join in singing "and then there were none." it's so filled with emotion! chilling. they're all such amazing actors.
Shoot, I worded it wrong. The actor playing adult man actually like slaps the actor playing moritz on stage. Like really. There are some union guidelines on how to do it, so they had to follow that and come in an hour early. But moritz is really slapped... JGJ said it actually hurt sometimes.
To answer the slapping question, moritz's father actually really slaps him on stage, and the actors playing moritz and the adult man had to go into the show an hour earlier then everyone to practice it because the union wanted them to practice "safe slapping". That probably would have been difficult for the understudy because they don't really know the safety or know that they are going on very quickly, making it difficult to do. And Blake explains why they didn't do it on tour...
@weenylem If that's the case then Lea probably would have requested that both the sex scene and the beating scene be omitted as well. There are many, many scenes that would be considered "uncomfortable"; that's part of performing.
@Pauly00001 whyyy would they get rid of the slaps? That ruined the scene for me, I thought it made the scene so much more poignant being able to see Moritz's face while his father denounced him. I saw the non-eq tour last week and herr stiefel just kinda threw Moritz on the floor and Moritz looked like he was crying while his dad was being a jerk. But I thought the scene was so much better when it was about moritz's depression from disappointing his father, not being abused by his father.
JGJ was the only actor to properly get Moritz, I think. :D

This is maybe my favorite performance in Spring Awakening - either this or Don't Do Sadness. He rocks!

a) This was on Broadway 2/10/07.
b) They only removed the slaps on tour, on Broadway they were omitted when Tony Carlin (understudy) went on as the adult man.
