  • Good tip!!!! Got to rehouse an OBT soon, i'll definitely be using this technique....thanks!

  • he looks pissed

  • What happens if they get vaseline on their feets and then later starts too groom? isnt there big a risk that they will get vaseline in their mouth parts?

  • @JensTwn You asked this question before, so I'll answer again. There is not enough residue to cause any harm. I use a very thin layer food grade grease now instead of Vaseline, because the grease won't run under warm conditions. To date, I have never had a problem with any tarantula unpacked using this method. I don't see a problem. This is my opinion and observance of my tarantulas.

  • @moose9900 Oops sry, did not remember that

  • how did i miss this?

yeah, it's just something i came up with to unpack Poecilotheria, after one shot out of my bathtub and almost made it to the ceiling LOL.

it works for all fast and defensive Ts that like to run, i've never had one run out out of the containers, and i use a VERY small amout of bug stop. never had one problem and i've been doing this for almost a year now.

  • It sure came in handy when packing a 5"+ female H. lividum with and attitude a couple days ago. Great idea Dan.

  • Pterinochilus Murinus

  • lol i no this sounds dumb but wat about a bath tub?

  • No, not a dumb question, I don't have a bath tub. This is a great alternative.

  • lol alright =) cuz as you no i might get one... i heard you should handle the "fast tree climbers" in the tub thanks =]

  • Yeah as you can see in the video, that OBT (very fast) wasn't going nowhere.

  • I have had this idea but I didnt know if it was toxic lol

  • If you decide to try this I would try a roach barrier instead of Vaseline. Both are non toxic, but I have discovered that the Vaseline attracts dust and after awhile it makes a climbable surface, at least for roaches. Also other concerns have been "well the tarantula track it on its feet and ingest while grooming". My answer would be its possible, but its non-toxic and you wipe it down first to remove all residual, so unlikely.

  • Originally I had seen that porcelain bathtubs worked well, cause the tarantula can't scale porcelain I don't have a bathtub so I had to come up with a different method. And roach barrier may work better on this project cause it doesn't attract dust like petroleum jelly does. It works great for me cause I do get some runners now and then.

  • cool video greg your scorp is in transit!!

  • From what i have heard its not good for them to get vaseline on their feet.

It can get vaseline in its mouth parts if he starts to groom with vaseline on its feet.

They also have tasting sensores under their feets.

  • Thats always a possibility. After I applied it to the container, I wiped it off, so I don't think there would be enough to hurt the spider. Besides, vaseline is non toxic. I haven't had any problems with my tarantulas.

    -Greg

  • Its not toxic but if it comes in the mouth parts it will be very hard get it away.

  • thats a great idea! and nice lil OBT, he's a meanie

  • i have always used a catch tub. But never thought of lining it.Thanks for that 5*
