  • Loved this movie so much that I cannot stop thinking about it..one of the best films ever made...great work addie (tatum). love the kid ...

  • Yes agreed barrowak99723

  • please put whole movie online

  • Just got to watch this twice to get it. One of the best films ever made but try Badlands with Martin Sheen to see how they made classics in 1973.

  • this trick works every time as long as you can distract the cashier. Its harder the more people around thus the less busy a place is the more likely - because you don't want them to be too busy so you can strike up a conversation

  • I think the reason why some people can't see his scam rightaway is because at 0:55 they cut away to Tatum O'Neal when the cashier gives him the $5 bill. So it's unclear if she actually had given it to him or not.

  • @thx291 yeah, I agree with you! I think if they hadn't cut the scene, most people would notice that at first.

  • 1:22

  • Now here y' be!

  • When I was a kid I saw a guy pull this exact scam in a petstore in Memphis. As I recall he picked up a twenty...

  • @noobishmyspacer

I also had to watch it two times, that was pretty slick :)

  • it took me 2 times to watch this but i got it lol - good stuff (323) omg moving to the 818 now blahhhhh!

  • funny how even with unlimited playbacks at least two people here screwed the math.

the only incorrect part of the transaction was the last -- getting a 10 for a 5. that's it. it's neither "a profit of $6" nor "Profit $5.85 plus free goods".

  • You must get the DVD for the Directors commentary and the blooper reel is excellent !

  • Alittle later on in the movie Tatum pulls the same con on the cotton candy vender at the caravel flawlessly too...

  • I LOVE this movie. The acting and the setting was beyond superb.

  • this is my favorite movie ever!!!!! i love it

    hahaha

  • Profit is $4.85 plus the goods. You can start with $6 (a five and a one) and end up with $10.85 plus the ribbons.

    Pretty slick. ;)

  • he pays $.15 for the ribbons and gets $4.85 back.

    he's even.

he keeps the change so he now has 4 bills. He uses one of his own bills to give her 5 ones in "exchange for a 5."

    he's even again.

she keeps the 1s in her hand and never puts them back.

he distracts her with questions. and with the $5 bill she JUST gave him.. says.. "how about you give me a $10?"

so he hands her his five. he's down 5.

but as asked, she hands him a $10... and thus he is now UP $5.

  • £5.85

  • THanks understand it now

  • @bloodonthesnow

    hah! now I get it!

funny thing is, I was one time the victim of that trick. I distinctly remember thinking "gosh I've just been paper moon'd" :)

  • cool movie, check out what's up doc. Funniest chase scene of all time.

  • lmaoooo miskeeeena old lady got trickedddddd

  • Remember the 20 dollar scam? I want to try that someday! LOL!

  • It seems to me that the key here is did Ryan O'Neal ever hand her a 5. I never see it on the video, at least but maybe I am just missing it. Can someone point to when it exactly happens?

  • Real scam that is used today.

    1)Purchase made for .15 with a $5. bill

    2)Change $4.85

3)Coins are kept and a single is added to the four dollars then a $5 bill is requested.

4)Cashier has the 5 singles in one hand and pulls a five dollar bill from the till and hands it over. Before the cashier can put away her 5 singles the conman hands back the $5. saying "take this $5. and you already have the five singles now just give me a ten".

Result: Profit $5.85 plus free goods

  • LOL I still don't get it! HELP!

  • it was 15 cents.

    he handed her a 5.

She gave him 4 ones and .85 cents

he puts a 1 with the 4 ones and asks her for a 5

she hands him the 5, but she still has the 5 ones in her hand

he hands her the 5 back, she still has the 5 ones in her hand and he says he wants a ten for all of it.

    lol, that was just cool.

  • Thanks for being explicit. However. I never saw in the scene

    "she hands him the 5"

Can you tell me the exact point in the video here where that happens--like 0:56 or some such

    Thanks!

    Dan

  • it still don't get it.

what the hell is wrong with me?!

  • Can somebody please explain the trick to me???? I've watched it three times now and I still don't get it lol.

  • Ok. So he pays for the .15 ribbon from a 5 dollar bill. She gives him his change: $4.85. He sticks the cents in his pocket, takes out another single and asks to exchange the 5 singles for a $5 bill. She gives him the 5 and while she's talking and has the 5 singles in her hand, he says, "Say, I'll give you this 5 plus the 5 you got in your hand." So he got her distracted enough to think he had given her 5 singles and a 5 when really he gave her only $5. Do you get it now?

  • Thanks so much for adding this. If you watch the directors cut with commentary on, they said that Ryan O'Neal did not understand the con when they explained the scene to him the first time... Tatum on the other hand... picked it up the first time and ran with it. The characters actors really add even more to this film. So many great faces and voices. Thanks for posting it!

  • I still don't get it - he got $4.85 in change, then gives her the 4 back plus one and asks for a $5.00 bill - no problem as far as I see - then gives her another $5 and asks for a $10 - how does he make any money?

  • He does not give her another five. After she gives him the 5, he gives her the same 5 back to make it look like he gave her the 5 plus the 5 ones she had in her hand. So she gave him a 10 back. So in reality, he exchanged a 5 for a 10. So he got like a $5 profit.

  • Yikes!! Five dollars was a LOT of money back then. I've watched this scene 'bout 10 times now, and I still can't get the math down! How much did he get away with?

  • Instead of $4.85 change for the 2 ribbons; he walked away with $10.85; which would have given him a profit of $6 all together. This movie is really good by the way, if you ever get a chance!!!

  • no he skinned her for five.

  • So he scammed her out of one dollar?

  • this is my favorite movie of all time .thanks

  • Old con-man routine. I tried this on a friend who was a cashier to show how easy it is for him to get scammed and it worked. I gave him back the money though of course.
