lame that they removed the music...fantastic footage and video man, well done! this song always makes me extremely sad for some reason and i am in no way connected to the event nor do i work on boats etc.
I first heard this song on a tractor radio in Minnesota, I think it was 1976. I heard it time and time again and loved it. It was a rare song that sang of something so close to Minnesota, and so powerfully. The haunting music sounded just like the "ice water mansions" in the song. I wanted to hear it again now, but the privateers say no dice. Internet in decline, I guess....
Ahh the good old days when musicians reported what was happening to their people in the form of a prayer/music. I never thought this was just entertainment. It's alot like painting and drawing? It would inspire citizens to move forward, learn from mistakes, you know. Now most paintings and drawings are just decorative, you know pretty landscapes, but did we really care? I mean 29 people died on this day, I've yet to see anything other than this video to honor their passing.
It's a shame they didn't at least leave the news commentators remarks at the beginning. I don't think they own those do they? It's still a fantastic video. Good job.
PHUCK WARNER MUSIC GROUP. I wouldn't piss on these pricks if they were on fire. What greedy cum guzzling arse cleaners! Remove Edmund Fitz from this piece WITH VIDEO?!?!? REALLY?!?!? . They might as well have left no music- I could play my armpit better than this tool.

@redneck66534 I came here just to hear the song, because I watched We are Marshall last night and the song by Gordon Lightfoot - If you could read my mind was in that movie. I didn't realize this was the anniversary of the sinking of The Edmund Fitzgerald. Ironically the 40th anniversary of the plane crash that killed all 75 people on board and most of the Marshall team is Nov. 14, 1970. May they all rest in peace.
@sandsplains15 if you read the comment correctly you would see that he/she was talking about the Marshall plane cras when speaking of the dates. Let's not argue about such trivial things. Many people died in both cases.
I remember the day that ship sunk so very well. My dad was in the same Lake Superior at the western end that day. All the children at my elementary school were enjoying the 50-70 mph wind. One image that stays forever in my mind is looking at a hundred kids with their coats outstretched like bird wings running with the wind across the playground faster than their legs would ever carry them.
When I saw this video originally, I thought it was one of the most moving tributes to the Big Fitz that I had ever saw....tis a real pity it cannot be shown in it's original form.... D.L.N. Michigan

The music was copyrighted. He used it without Warner/Moose Music's permission, just as the CBS news footage, which was likely lifted along with much of the other video from the short documentary "Fitzgerald", produced by the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Museum. Then again, the Museum has plenty of skeletons in IT'S closet as well, and is the reason why the Michigan "Bottomlands" laws were passed.
Does -anyone- know what the alternate music is? It's actually a decent piece that goes well enough with the start of the video that it seems someone put thought into it. So...anyone have any ideas?

This is just me, but I think there are plenty of videos with Gordon Lightfoot's song here on YT with the fitz. It was refreshing to hear this video's audio instead. I know it's been said before, but it would be great to know this orchestral music's title and artist.
I love the classic footage as well as the audio used. Thank you for posting this video. Well done!
Awesome Video, It's a shame you can't use Gordon's song. I offer you another choice. I wrote a song called Remember the Edmund, a couple years ago and played it for The Great Lakes Shipwreck Society. I was told it was very good. I offer you the use of my song, I wrote, recorded and sang the song. I own the rights and give you my permmission to use it. It's just under 6 min long, and a link can be found on my Soo Locks Video page. I will contact you soon with more info.
Awesome video. I'm a Navy destroyerman - life is much different on deep water, not to mention salt water. I've always been fascinated by the Edmund Fitzgerald, because I'm so aware of those differences. Would have loved to have spent a couple seasons on the Great Lakes. God bless these 29 men, and their families. And, God bless all sailors, everywhere. Thanks for this video, Josephulton, I'm saving it to watch while listening to Gordon Lightfoot. And, screw copyrights!
WMG is an abomination, where would the people who played and wrote this music be without an audience listening and enjoying music. WMG if you are listening, the people of this planet are far from pleased with you!!!
Cool, you're bored. But, this isn't entertainment, it's real life. You might quietly move on to more trivial pursuits, and not be disrespectful of all these dead men, and their families. You'd likely be upset if we came to your town, and pissed on your (great)grandparent's graves.
I apologize for my disrespect to this particular video. I feel such sorrow when I think of this tragedy . I had been looking at several videos the day I posted my comment. It was the audio that bored me. I am truly sorry.
What the hell is wrong with Warner Music Group? Do I state the obvious and say what about all the younger generation who may not be familiar with this (and other) truly great pieces of lyric and melody that may actually turn them into a paying customer? For God's sake...
I was 17 when this song came out, it sent chilles down my spine, the first time it played on the radio, and even today, it will bring a tear to my eye.
This is getting very old. Some of my favorite videos and songs are being taken away by this very un-cool (I had more colorful words, but this is a family site) company. If we are not purchasing it or giving Youtube money for the videos and music, why is it such a violation and why are we being punished. If this keeps up, I forsee a dismal future for Youtube. A notice is going to Warner Music Group. =-(
This is a wonderful and moving tribute to the 29 men we still remember and honor after almost 34 years. Excellently edited, everyone should read the sidebar comments (more info) since the audio was removed.
The gales of november came early and also There is a great lakes triangle similar to that of the burmuda triangle. lake superior runs deep. May the sous of the dead rest in peace
Two summers ago, I had heard this song on my dad's CD. I kept it and played it over and over every day of that summer break. It's such an incredible story, so deep and so sad. Just a regular crew, on a regular voyage...
It's a shame that YouTube took away the audio. I could send you a video to try to reclaim it, but since you've already audioswaped it out, it may not work.
I will forever save this video, & play the song; and remember the men who died on Nov. 10th, 1975. <3 Rest in peace.
Wonderful. :D I saw this when it had the song still up, and it was beautiful. Since I was just in the play called Ten November (The story of the wreck), I feel a special attachment to these images. (I had a monologue as a widow and I danced the Spirit of Lake Superior. It was actually a very good show.)
I did an end run around the censors. I openned another youtube "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" of slightly shorter length on another window. Started your clip, and when it got to 0:14, I synched up the other clip and ta da, there you go.
Sadly, it doesn't have your other audio clips but it does give fine credit to your video editing.
Try sending your tribute off to Lightfoot's management. As you are not trying to make money on this and it is a fine tribute to both the men and the song, so in spirit, like the song, they may be lienient.
i watched it with the music, this is still great but all those extra things you added in with the music were so wonderful like the news guy and the radio things reli added alot to it, too bad you couldnt keep it sorry
I was raised in the twin ports of Duluth/Superior and as a young man of 15 I remember the storm and the day the "big Fitz" left Superior, she was the pride of the American side.
Your first video was perfect, My kids loved watching it and asked so many questions that my oldest did a report in school on the sinking. Thanks for the original, it was a work of art!!
What a comedown from your original with lightfoot's song. Wow. Funny thing, the stupid bastards don't realize that your original vid with that song was GREAT publicity for them--now they're rat bastards and nobody will buy it.
I feel like I should be watching a love story filmed in Africa or something. I had to go watch the real video and song by GF just to cleanse this crap from my system!
I'm Very disapointed in Gordon And Warner Music Group for making issue with the use of the song.
As a family member of one of the lost crew... Both made plenty of money off the tragedy. They can let you use it. OR stop selling it themselves. Greedy bastards.
Too bad the copyright problem meant they had to take off the Gordon Lightfoot song. But I also recall that the music was spliced with some of the news footage (like in the beginning) which described the various stages of the disaster and the history of the ship. It would be great to have that part of the sound back.
Youtube really knows how to fuckin ruin things. Whenever they give me a copyright problem, I go to stickam and put my video there. I want to hear Lightfoot's song -not this crap. This would have been a great video.
I just muted the sound and synced it up with the proper music from another source. What a shame Warner wouldn't let you keep up the music! This is the best video for "The Wreck..." that I've seen! What would Mr. Lightfoot say??
This was one of my favorite songs growing up in the 70's and still is. Was so cool that they finally found the ship and laid that bell on it as a tribute. So sad that all those men died and they still don't know exactly what the cause was even today. Great job on the video!!
Beautiful work there. A lovely tribute to men who died so suddenly. It's only a pity that others cannot put aside their own prejudices and take the video for what it is.
Thank you for the great tribute...... I found out through family tree tracing that I had some family on the fitzgerald and now thanks to all that has been done it filled the empty void in my past. Again thankyou and good job :)

3 exclamations, you must be easilly bored. My guess is that the basement you live in is boring . Come on kid, get out and live a little!
ehswan 2 years ago

Bravo! and Thank-you!

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
Germany124 2 years ago
Wonderful. :D I saw this when it had the song still up, and it was beautiful. Since I was just in the play called Ten November (The story of the wreck), I feel a special attachment to these images. (I had a monologue as a widow and I danced the Spirit of Lake Superior. It was actually a very good show.)
Good work on it. :D

Josephulton,
Nicely done.

PS
Try sending your tribute off to Lightfoot's management. As you are not trying to make money on this and it is a fine tribute to both the men and the song, so in spirit, like the song, they may be lienient.
You never know, they may let you repost it.

I was raised in the twin ports of Duluth/Superior and as a young man of 15 I remember the storm and the day the "big Fitz" left Superior, she was the pride of the American side.

What a comedown from your original with lightfoot's song. Wow. Funny thing, the stupid bastards don't realize that your original vid with that song was GREAT publicity for them--now they're rat bastards and nobody will buy it.

I'm Very disapointed in Gordon And Warner Music Group for making issue with the use of the song.
As a family member of one of the lost crew... Both made plenty of money off the tragedy. They can let you use it. OR stop selling it themselves. Greedy bastards.
xcaliber69 2 years ago 9
