The same way as it did in Sodom and Gomorrah. They are not still burning, but their punishment had eternal consequences. The judgement was decided and the punishment was a consuming, devouring, fire that could not be quenched. It burnt them to ashes (like Malachi 4 and 2 Peter 2:6). They do not continue burning forever, but God's tongue is a devouring fire (Isaiah 30:27) that burns & destroys the wicked.

Everyone has different stories which may be similar to what they think heaven/hell may be, but they are all different. Plus many of them say things like there are devils poking them with pitchforks...the fire was created to destroy those devil and his minions (Rev 20:10).

@7F0X7 The "rich man" represented the Pharisees. The beggar Lazarus represented the common Jewish people who were despised by the Pharisees but who repented and became followers of Jesus. Their deaths were also symbolic, representing a change in circumstances. Thus, the formerly despised ones came into a position of divine favor, and the formerly seemingly favored ones were rejected by God, while being tormented by the judgement messages delivered by the ones whom they despised.

@543210vb What evidence is there that the parable was not a literal story? I've read through Luke many times and there's nothing there to lead me to believe that Jesus wasn't telling a literal story. It wouldn't make sense for Jesus to tell a story about hell if it wasn't real. Luke 16:23: "And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. " This is a REAL place with REAL people in it, not some allegorical metaphor just because you say so!

The difference is one interpretation states hell will burn forever, the other states sinners will be burned and forever destroyed. The concept of eternal hell didn't show up until medievel teachings and even the Jews don't believe in hell and they were the stewards of the Old Testament. If this universe is ever to be pure wouldn't it make more sense that hell would destroy the ones in it and not last forever but instead have everlasting results?

Also, Satan is placed into the abyss (Rev 20:3), not into hell/hades/gehenna.
I won't try and debate the issue in this forum, but I hope you study the issue. God is just and fair, and the issue is worth much study.
John 3:16 even says you will either perish or receive the gift of eternal life.

Revelation 20:9b "...fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them"
The same way as it did in Sodom and Gomorrah. They are not still burning, but their punishment had eternal consequences. The judgement was decided and the punishment was a consuming, devouring, fire that could not be quenched. It burnt them to ashes (like Malachi 4 and 2 Peter 2:6). They do not continue burning forever, but God's tongue is a devouring fire (Isaiah 30:27) that burns & destroys the wicked.

@7F0X7 The "rich man" represented the Pharisees. The beggar Lazarus represented the common Jewish people who were despised by the Pharisees but who repented and became followers of Jesus. Their deaths were also symbolic, representing a change in circumstances. Thus, the formerly despised ones came into a position of divine favor, and the formerly seemingly favored ones were rejected by God, while being tormented by the judgement messages delivered by the ones whom they despised.

It wouldn't make sense for Jesus to tell a story about hell if it wasn't real. Luke 16:23: "And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. Death on earth is only temporal because everyone will be raised again at the resurrection.

Death in of itself is a punishment and everlasting death is an everlasting punishment in of itself. They will never come back from this punishment and live. The difference is one interpretation states hell will burn forever, the other states sinners will be burned and forever destroyed. The concept of eternal hell didn't show up until medievel teachings and even the Jews don't believe in hell and they were the stewards of the Old Testament. If this universe is ever to be pure wouldn't it make more sense that hell would destroy the ones in it and not last forever but instead have everlasting results?
