Probably because he dared to establish another record label (SARS), that would have drawn even more AA entertainers away like Motown did. I know how they operate. My friend... The lyrics are very eerie to say the least because both Johnny(in the story) and Sam Cooke were both shot by a woman. However the difference is that in real-life Sam Cooke was shot by a hotel manager who wasn't romantically involved with Sam Cooke at all.

So to answer your question Sam Cooke didn't die for the same reason... suprisingly enough, because if he did die for that reason it would be understandable lol
