Paragraph 175 was still in use until June 11, 1994! The most tragic is that after the war, homosexual men and women had to serve long time in prison for their homosexuality. The other large exception was the Jews who were not welcome anywhere and had to struggle for survival even after WW2. So here we have two groups of people who's lives were changed to the worst after the war. Two groups that still suffer from all kind of discrimination in todays society.

I don't really like to be very involved with gays and lesbians. But they are people and I would not ignore them in time of need if they need help because of what they are. Homosexuality under the 3rd Reich, while illegal (as it was everywhere else in the world), wasnt a charge normally punished with jail. A total of 60000 were charged, 10k of those went to camps, and only a quarter of that number died. Look at the german documents, its all there.

However, to say gays are generally accepted is untrue, you'd have to be homosexual to have experience with that. When I came out, I lost half my friends, and I had scars and bruises from the fights I got in at school. I was barred from participating in school events, sports, plays, etc.
Homosexuals in the USA are generally open and accepted - they even have big annual parades in major cities, and amusement parks have "gay" days just for them. Gay-Straight alliances are common in schools. Gay marriage rights are growing. HIV victms are supported and and treated at public expense. All within Christian civilization. He was never a nazi, not every german was a party member. as for Pope Pius XII there is allot you need to learn about his involvement in world war 2, he saved a great many people. Actually, the current pope was a member of the Hitler Youth, but it was by force. Also, without help from the catholic officials in Germany, the Nazis wouldn't have had enough votes to take power. Furthermore, many fleeing Nazi officials were aided by Catholic Bishops in Italy. Not trying to argue, I just thought it was interesting.

Homosexuality under the 3rd Reich, while illegal (as it was everywhere else in the world), wasnt a charge normally punished with jail. A total of 60000 were charged, 10k of those went to camps, and only a quarter of that number died. Look at the german documents, its all there.

@horselips I both agree and disagree with you. The US is very tolerant of homosexuality compared to many other countries. However, to say gays are generally accepted is untrue, you'd have to be homosexual to have experience with that. When I came out, I lost half my friends, and I had scars and bruises from the fights I got in at school. I was barred from participating in school events, sports, plays, etc.

Homosexuals in the USA are generally open and accepted - they even have big annual parades in major cities, and amusement parks have "gay" days just for them. Gay-Straight alliances are common in schools. Gay marriage rights are growing. HIV victms are supported and and treated at public expense. All within Christian civilization. OK so there's a cranky cleric here and there - but where's the appreciation for the progress you have been allowed and even encouraged to make. You're an ingrate.

He was never a nazi, not every german was a party member. as for Pope Pius XII there is allot you need to learn about his involvement in world war 2, he saved a great many people. He was criticized and rightly so for not publically defying nazi policy, but only to stay in power so he could help people secretely. many historians want him in Yad Vashem.

The plan was if he and the vatican were taken, his abdication was instant, the holy see would move to spain. He lets gay men become priests even, granted he does look down on the act itself seeing as his hands are tied as a christian leader. Its sorta hard to overlook the bible's explicit homophobia both leviticus and Paul's condemnations. But to even open the doors by letting gay men be clergy is at least a start no? Full acceptance is a big leap, baby steps?

Actually, the current pope was a member of the Hitler Youth, but it was by force. Also, without help from the catholic officials in Germany, the Nazis wouldn't have had enough votes to take power. Furthermore, many fleeing Nazi officials were aided by Catholic Bishops in Italy. Not trying to argue, I just thought it was interesting.

Haha. Yes, read any book on the fall of Weimar Republic and the Rise of Hitler. The Catholic Center Party eventually sided with the Nazi Party. After the Nazis recieved the votes they needed, they disbanned all political parties (they were outlawed), including the Center Party, which was yes, a Catholic Party. And saying "Not trying to argue", means I do not feel like having a pissing match regarding "who knows more about the Holocaust".

Early in German National Socialism there were some like Ernst Rohm (a known homosexual) leader of the SA (Sturmabteilung). Hitler wanted to conciliate leaders of the official military Reichswehr, and saw paramilitary Brownshirts under Rohm as threat to his power & had them executed between June 30 and July 2 1934 in the Night of the Long Knives. Then the purge on homosexuals really began under the Nazi.
