is your crab still alive? ive got a 10 gallon tank set up with water filter and an air pump with some air rocks for some added oxygen. also, how often do you have to change the filters? are they dirty little buggers?
@ng31200 well they live in the bays sooo i would try brakish water.. check your water temps .. the bay where i live usually gets about 78 in summer and about 40-55 in the winter..... also you may just have gotten a bad crab, because even still the crabs are very adaptable sooo its possible that it was stressed or sick
@jackiebabe209 you should use brackish water a mixture of sea salt and fresh... they should be able to catch live fish but if you are concerned you could handicap the fish in someway (thats up to you) but you could feed the crab all kinds of crab they are scavangers by nature so i mean you could feed raw chicken skin or whatever and it would eat it , just make sure you have a very powerful filter cause they do make alot of mess while eating
No no! Do not use table salt or cooking salt! They can stay in totally fresh water permanantly. No salt necessary. If you REALLY want to use salt (you don't have to) use the salt sold in pet shops to make a saltwater fish tank. It is different than the salt we use for cooking. Adding salt will make the whole thing more complicated, though. You will need to buy instruments to measure salt level, watch water levels, etc. Better to just use fresh, DECHLORINATED water.
Sorry - the music got all screwed up. My original song was blocked, then I had to change it and something else went wrong and had to change it again. I just mute it now. I don't care anymore. Too much trouble fixing it over and over.
this would mean a lot 2 me, what requirements do you need to keep these guys as pets, i only want one and what exactly do you need, please tell me, thanx 8^) awesome crab by the way!
WOOOOOOOOW that is one badass crab.Blue claw crabs are VERY aggressive. But are you sure that they can live in freshwater if so (just to double check) please reply.I wanna get one right away.I dont know why,but there seems to be absolutely no info on blue claw crabs as pets just as food.NOT FAIR.
Yup, I'm 100% sure they can stay in fresh water. I've done it 3 times now. Not many people know this, but it's true. Females need highly salty water for reproduction - they migrate from low salt to high salt in the wild, but a male can definitely stay in 100% fresh water all the time in your tank.
(continued) You could add some store bought sea salt if you want, creating a brackish tank if it will make you feel safer, and they'll do fine in that too, but it's not really necessary.
(continued, pt. 2) Google "Blue Crab Forum" and join up there. Mostly it's about people catching crabs to eat, but there are a few people on there who have kept them as pets. There is also TONS of good information about the lifecycle and needs of crabs. There are not many of us out there who keep them as pets, and you have to be kinda nuts to do it, but hey - that's me! I think they make awesome pets! Just keep your lid taped shut cause they LOVE to climb and explore.
Wow! Thats really cool. I live near the beach and the bay, and I'm thinking about getting a male blue claw as a pet now that I know they can survive in both salt and fresh water. ^_^
They normally live in salt water you can catch them in the ocean, but they can live in fresh water in an aquarium. Good pets but very aggressive and like to climb.
In the video he's eating a piece of raw beef. They like raw chicken and raw fish too. They are very messy eaters-shreds fly everywhere-and you must clean the tank (vacuum gravel) often. You can keep males in fresh, brackish or salt water-whatever you like. They are EXTREMELY aggressive-BE CAREFUL-WATCH YOUR FINGERS! They will destroy anything in the tank with them including decorations. Tape down the tank lid or they'll escape! Very interesting to watch in the tank-very cool pets! Good luck!
Yes. Males will live a full life and grow to full size in fresh water. Females need salt water to reproduce. It's better to leave the females alone in the wild so they can make more baby crabs. Lots of people say they don't catch as many as they used to, so it's good to give the females a chance to keep on multiplying. They are pretty much impossible to breed in captivity, so best to let nature take care of the females.
I want to see it swim..does it?
