This isn't fast. Listen the speed of the bass and compare it to fast tunes of the time, e.g., "Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight", "Ta Ra Ra Boom De Ay", or the can-can from The Orpheus Overture. Those are the tempos Joplin meant by "fast". The tempo played here is pretty much spot on to what you'll hear in recordings from the era. It's a march tempo, but "not fast" -- which is what it says on the score.
Q.E.D., it isn't. You just think it is because practically all modern music is andante. As I said, compare it to tunes of its time. Listen to period recordings. Listen to marches. Listen to the accounts of people who lived in the time. The only people who think this is too fast are those who don't know a thing about ragtime beyond the anachronistically played versions by Hamlisch and Rifkin (and they'll tell you they were being anachronistic).
There is no quarter note, but it does say "Not fast" which is why the person in this video is not playing it fast. ("Not fast" does not equal "slow".) How many recordings from 1897-1918 have you heard? How many ragtime albums do you own? How many ragtime festivals, concerts, and seminars have you attended? How many ragtime composers other than Joplin can you name off the top of your head? Until these numbers are well above 0, please stop pretending to know what you're talking about.
@Keeper1st I like the tempo this guy is doing it - and I am one of the guys that runs around commenting "TOO FAST" on Joplin pieces. OTOH, the players at the ragtime festivals? Awesome technical skills, but those guys wreck the tunes more often than not. Too fast AND too cute.
wtf?! i have been playing piano for 7 years and i have not once encountered "levels" of piano playing. your music teacher must be on drugs or something lol
Guy in vid, you need to get access to a nicer unit, @ school, friend, etc. or save up b/c you will actually HURT your growth if you get too used to that thing. I had a D-50 and played for so long that a REAL piano totally messed me up so I saved and plunked for a full size 88 weighted and now I am fine... Just a suggestion if you aren't already doing that.
This is good. I think guys it's easy to be a critic especially if you don't do this... trust me it's HARD and on that piece of plastic shit? Those keys are H O L L O W.. it's really really easy to fat-finger two keys accidentally on those shitty things.. Kinda explains why Roland and others make WEIGHTED keys and FULL SIZE.. etc. Some with action. I have a fantom X8 and it's basically tailored for that feel. He's SLAMMING considering the instrument.
wat r u guys tklin bout?!?!?! this song is the speed its supposed 2 be at... im learnin it for a piano comp and i listened 2 this song on a cd and this was the speed that they played it! this song is so much harder than it looks btw... it is a level 9 song in piano... well maybe its just hard for me cause im only in level 7, but anyways... I also dont blame u for not playin the part in D flat cause I can only do one hand of it (im playin it in an ensemble so its ok that i drop a hand).
On my sheet music, it says 72 beats per minute. I'd say you're going around 90 here near the beginning, then speeding up. It sounds rather rushed. Also, swing your 16th notes. It will feel more like ragtime then.
You have the notes down pretty well. Just slow it down and you won't mess it up. This one doesn't need to be played that quickly.
Good Job, nice to hear something other than the entertainer around here. If you're really into Scott Joplin or Ragtime music, you can look at antique upright pianos on ebay, you can get one pretty cheap if you're willing to drive to get it. Ragtime sounds great on old pianos. You play any other rags?
Don't bother buying a "baby grand" as they are no better than uprights and are gobs more expensive. A True grand however, is worth purchase. You're gonna want something weighted eventually.
Really good. The "whole mass of mistakes" honestly didn't sound bad and were the result of the good pace you play your ragtime at (which I can't use as my excuse when I slow it down). Nice to hear a Scott Joplin tune which is lesser known and just nice to hear more ragtime. Good going!
I like it but too fast in my opinion.

Your technique looks okay, but this piece lacks style and phrasing. It sounds like you are in a rush to finish the piece.

A weighted keyboard might do you well... easier to play and the keyboard won't be so shaky.
Good job.

great! but where is the last part?

Once again, great job! But maybe it would be in your better interests to buy a weighted keyboard.

Or a piano! If you can play that good, you deserve to have a freaking baby grand!!!!!! I love this song! Good job!
