Nobody will ever come close to Wes....Then, Now or in the distant future. He was far and away the very best at wat he did. There would never have been a Jimi Hendrix without this cat. Rev. Muddy
@waldo2384 they're not eating each others sandwiches! their arms are interlocked as a symbol of unity, just like their music comes together. However each man is eating his own sandwich just like each man is playing his own music, just that they are doing it together. Get It? The picture describes the album if you look at it closely. Beautiful work.
@waldo2384 After a long and smokey jam session, Jimmy and Wes floated into the kitchen. Upon opening the refridgerator door, they both quickly realized that there was only one sandwich. A brief struggle followed as they wrestled for the only munchies in the house. They both knew that if one of them got up to go get a knife to cut the sandwich, the other would eat the whole thing. So a quick race to eat the sandwich followed. Luckly a bystander was there to take a picture.
see,the Riverside Years from which this springs were so formative.Jimmy had bought a Manhattan humongous warehouse room and went to bed with his Hammond for about a year in the early 50s,came out WILD.Then mid 60s,Wes had been doing the double octave thing-another INDEPENDENT NEW STYLE of jazz on his own-and the 2 merged into a sound never before nor since matched.OK u think I Lie? how many of u cats have played and played the wax off this record? I rest my case.Riverside Years are real 4evah.
Regarding who's better - Benson or Wes, let's put it this way, Wes was the master Benson the student. Wes is perhaps the greatest jazz guitar player ever. Among his disciples: George Benson, Pat Martino, Pat Metheney, Grant Green etc....
@xango2001 I've never heard of Grant Green described before as one of Wes' disciples. They were more like a contemporaries. In fact I think Green once remarked that Wes should use a pick.
In 1963, during a job at the Half-Note in New York, he was asked about his growing fame and being on the road. The gist of his answer was, "I miss my wife and kids, and would prefer to play near home, in Cleveland." He was a sweet, thoughtful man with no interest in the vices that often attend the jazz world.
This definitely brings back great memories. I knew Jimmy and Lola Smith and used to visit their club back in the day when they were on Lankershim in North Hollywood. I met Lola at a gig with Buddy Collette in San Diego; very classy lady. Knew Jimmy when I booked The Times in Studio City and sang with him at Donte's way back when. RIP Jimmy and Wes, you are missed.
Brings back memories of driving my 67 V-8 mustang back from Tahoe and this was the only 8 track tape that came with the car! Didn't matter it was January and rainy on the trip. Jimmy and Wes were keepin' me company on the road on the way back from the gig back to L.A. 1968
I got a chance to know Wes Montgomery and his song, "Road Song" 4 month ago. And this song becomes one of my favorite songs. And Jimmy Smith's keyboard sounds so enthusiastic and fun so I will try to search for listing his music more. These must be great musicians to me.
I think it is well done to not "get in the way" of each other when there is a Hammond Organ and a guitar playing simultaneously ;D Wes' did allways back the piano well, like when he played with Wynton Marsalis... Great post! ;)
A guy gave me the score to this tune last night at a jam so thought I'd try and find a decent version before I had a crack at it. Man. This is a revelation! These guys aren't in the zone. They are the zone. Thanks for posting. Groove on!
Oh, & it's not 'bad' cover art, just SILLY!!! Jimmy's got a huge smile on his face, just from trying not to laugh! And Wes is peekin' at the camera, thinkin': "Did he take the *%&$ picture yet so I can stop holding this ridiculous pose???"
ha people who argue their most passionate political affiliations and beliefs on a comment board for a jazz song is are more ignorant than they know. Take that discussion somewhere else fellas. This is the time to enjoy and revel in the genius that is Wes Montgomery.
I love this tune it's such a great one to jam on with a friend:) I'll never understand how Wes was so good at playing octaves! He had super-human octave-abilities!
This version was an unreleased outtake that was a bonus track on the 1997 reissue CD release of "The Dynamic Duo" album.
