I love the classical gojuryu kata, especially seiunchin. I study/teach isshinryu karatedo which incorporates both shorinryu and gojuryu concepts. We practice a modified version of seiunchin, but I must admit that the goju version is more aesthetically pleasing. My personal bunkai actually has the effect of making my interpretation of the kata closer to goju standards than many of my contemporaries. Osu!
@NewEnglandBudo -- HaHa. If I was going to train in a different style of karate it would most definitely be gojuryu. But I'm very happy within the isshinryu system. Still, I consider ALL practitioners of traditional Okinawan karate-do to be a part of my family. Osu!
He does the twisting arm breaks in Shisoshin (7:25) differently in this video than the way he taught me at Gasshuku last year. I was taught to lead more with the fingers of the grabbing hand, but in this video he just raises his hand straight up. Funny how things change after only 20 years.
=]] awesome. I actually currently train with Sensei Chinen at Gonzaga University :) Great instructor, by far one of the best I've ever trained with :)
I once met Sensei Chinen in around 1993 at Tony Christians Academy in Shevington, i was around 12 at the time. It was an amazing experience that has stayed with me ever since.
I had the privilege of training with Sensei Chinen for a few months when I was going to school at Gonzaga. He is an incredible instructor...one of the best I've ever trained under.
ive trained with teru chenin before at his Gashuku's he can teach you more than anyone could in that week than anyone could he teaches traditional karate.
I like that he's wearing the truly old fashioned Gi's. Karate was created before the belt system of the Tang Dynasty influenced Japan was applied to it. If you went back in time to when Karate was created in Okinawa, there would be no talk of black belts and other such bullcrap, it was just all about what you could do.
thats awesome kata form, watch him and sensei Higoanna and you'll have all your bases covered.
Thanks for uploading the vid I will be recomending it to my students to veiw. One of the instructors I train with hopes to be training with in june/july when he comes here to NZ.
Yes, this is what the Okinawans would originally wear to practice before the advent of the karate gi. Sensei always jokes when people at tournaments require "traditional karate gi" to be worn. So Sensei always threatens to wear the above, the "original karate gi"
I hate this Okinawan bullshit. It always looks so choked up. And whats with all the bobbing??? He can't even stay at the same level when changing stances. It is understandable from Sanchin to Shiko but from Shiko to Shiko??? The only reason these guys even have a name is because of their instructor, because it can't be their skills.
You must utilize your legs and body motion to add to the power of the technique. Obviously you have not trained w/ Chinen Sensei! If so, you would know how that you are watching w/ an untrained eye!
This fella obviously has no training in our kata. The rising and falling (bobbing as he so called it) is essential to the training: sinking, rooting, posting, etc. To stay level would remove all of these vital elements...
I am not Jundokan, but I have to say that as a Goju-Ryu student, I don't agree that you are "less powerful" as a result of being fluid. The fluidity speaks to "Muchimi" and very fine control. IF you also practice explosive tech. and "hondai" waza, you should be fine. Ask Sensei about Muchimi and Ti-Ji-Kun. Belive me Your system lacks NO power.
what a great shiko dachi stance!

You are obviously used to the straighter, more linear Japanese version which is not considered proper by the Okinawans
