This intriguing blast from the past seems to say that this pianist had plenty of technique but he was hardly interested in showing it off, mostly they are preoccupied with expressiveness inherent in the music. The audience was presumably more conditioned to pick up nuances, and their rubato, especially. Hard to say much about the play in the dynamics, but the consistent tone control comes through.
