  • Go look up the lyrics. He only sings half the song. Why.

  • This WAS and still IS music, something that todays kids will never understand.Live long my friend.

  • Close your eyes baby-boomers, and let Procol Harum take you for a ride in their musical time machine.... oh how sweet and hauntingly sad. Time, how cruel... yet we remember with melancholy sweetness, our youth in all it's glory.

  • 8 FUCKHEAD INBRED'S !!!!!

  • The man still has it!

  • Way back in 1968 I was 17 years old and playing music in a bar from 10:30 PM to 3:30 AM. It was some of the best times in my life. When we went on break, I always played this song on the jukebox, over and over. It has always had a deep soulful feeling for me. The organ is mystical and haunting.

  • That was the good old days, of young love and freedom and that brown boxy organ what a legend!! going back in time, it makes me cry!!

  • Always goosebumps!

  • Brooker still sounds great and the song has stood the test of time - I agree with those who have said that if there is one last song I can hear (besides anything of JSB's) it is this! Great post - thanks!

  • i heard that this song was meant as put on, to make fun of dylan and other 60's obscure lyrics but it became a classic

  • Thank's.......

  • Agree with Andrew: "If I can only hear ONE last song before I die this would be it". I add, If I could take just one song to a desert island this would be it". When I first heard it I felt like being in heaven. Best song ever

  • The sheet music for the organ part in "A Whiter Shade of Pale" can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm.

  • The best song

  • Being a member of the Countryside Alliance makes him a super star. If we had millions more campaigning for such the world would be a much better place.

  • I don't know what it is, but there's something very soothing about Gary Brookers voice. At first I didn't really like it, but after a while he grew on me.

  • @JewishVegan yea done mate...

  • one of the worse songs i ever heard and the voice is terrible

  • Nice song but this man is pure evil.

He is a campaigner for the Countryside Alliance.

    Loser

  • Fantastic ................

  • I love this song. It's one of a kind......& only this man can sing it. Thanks....

  • ....beatiful song..1 of the greatest song i ever heard in my intire life..Gary Brooker you had a great voice..fantastic....

  • @houilolasd It's one of those songs that I can never get sick of hearing. I can listen to it multiple times in a sitting and still not mind hearing it again.

  • I was born the summer of '67, the summer when this was a hit, it is the best piece of music ever!

  • RINGO ON DRUMS!

  • pinche rollon me llega dentro muy dentro recuerdos muchos recuerdos

  • Hot DAMN, this man still sings like he's on fire. If we could still give stars I'd give this about 100.

  • still have my original copy though do not play it you can't damage a collectors item this is hard to distinguish from the original SUPERB!

  • Absolutely the best...and I have heard a story about even John Lennon had to stop his car if this song is played on the radio to listen to it without distractions...wow..is this for real.

  • Ringo Starr on drums left !

  • wonderful

  • after years of loving music I came to the conclusion that if I can only hear ONE last song before I die this would be it

  • i would agree

  • @Andrew16280 YOU GOT THAT RIGHT "this" and REFLECTIONS OF MY LIFE

  • Great song from a great singer!

I'm searching for Echoes in the night... could someone plz upload it?

Ty and Happy New Year to all of you!!

  • RONG! cocane.

  • Guys

I think Procol Harum was the first rock group to initiate what we know as "Synphonic rock" followed later by King Crimson, Moody Blues, Yes, Pink Floyd, etc.

This song must be at the top ten of the Synphonic rock masterpieces of all the times.

  • @apianta56 you mentioned pink floyd, and didn't refer to alan parsons... why?

  • @upthcreek, I didn´t refer to a specific list, it was just a general comment but for sure Alan Parsons could be in such list for sure. Sometimes the "top ten of something..." is not enough and it must be top 15 or 20 if needed, probably there are more than 10 songs that I like at such hypotetic list. Best regards

  • kewl dude... I still get way too wierd about the floyd/parsons thing... your non argumentive response gave me peace... ty...

  • @apianta56 does this pre-date what George Martin did on Beatles records?

  • @apianta56 Cool that you say this. Paul Mccartney said fundamentally the exact same thing. Well-said. -s

  • @coolchef64 thanks my friend

  • Air on a G String? That's very baudy!

  • Yes, it's Ringo. This is from the "Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band" DVD.

  • This **TUNE** was written around 1730 by one Johann Sebastian Bach. Give credit where it is due.

  • Lots of people believe that, however the Hammond organ line of "A Whiter Shade of Pale" was inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach's "Sleepers Awake" and "Air on a G String", but contrary to popular belief, the song is not a direct copy or paraphrase of any music by Bach, although it makes clear references to both pieces

  • You have a good imagination,

  • Stunning live version of a hauntingly beautiful song.

  • This track makes an old man happy, just one old hippy.

  • it is Peter Framton as well,

  • We skipped a light fandango,

    Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor.

I was feeling kind of seasick,

But the crowd called out for more.

    The room was humming harder,

    As the ceiling flew away.

When we called out for another drink,

    The waiter brought a tray.

  • It is Ringo!

  • Mr.Brooker please,I`m looking at 60years of age and loved this song seems like for ever, but what the hell does it all mean,16 vessle virgins leaving for the coast etc.etc.,HELP before its to late

  • And so it was that later, As the miller told his tale, That her face at first just ghostly, Turned a whiter shade of pale. She said there is no reason, And the truth is plain to see That I wandered through my playing cards, And would not let her be One of sixteen vestal virgins Who were leaving for the coast. And although my eyes were open, They might just as well have been closed.
  • THAT IS DEFINITLEY RINGO

  • no me queda mas que decir gracias Gary Brooker y a todos los integrantes de Procol Harum . se que esta cancion quedara en nuestra memoria por siempre.

  • one of the all-time classics that sounds as good as ever.

  • Is Ringo Star playing the drums ? I love this song brings back good memories ( I was Young )

  • I would say yes.

  • EXELENTE

  • I did'nt know that the roots of this song were of German origin, Johan Sebastian Bach, who was a man gifted ....Procol Harum 1,967......awesome.....

  • Great performance. Thanks for sharing. I saw them in about 1970 at the NY Academy of Music in Grenwich Village (front row center, lower balcony, smoking Jamaican in our seats). They were the headliners. Yes opened (their first American tour) and King Crimson played second. Probably my favorite concert of all time. I'm impressed by how well Gary could still sing here after all these years.. Happen to have any more songs from this performance?

  • GOD BLESS YOU GARY. WE LOVE YOU

    4 EVER..

  • To skooterbud - Special memories to me also, being in one of West-Africa's countries, living (as a teenager) on a hill facing the ocean, American neighbours and friends, listening again and again to this song (and others from the double album), coming home to my country, to another war...

One of the best songs ever. Thanks for uploading.

  • This is one of the greats songs ever written It abides in our heart and soul that voice the the greatest , this one is forever .God bless you Gary .

  • organ player looks like "the face on mars"

  • Thanks very much abidin61, I was 11 yrs old when that was released and it has always been my favourite.

    regards Jim

  • My pleasure Jim, I love seeing this song appreciated. It is one of my favourites as well.

    Enjoy.

  • You cleaned this up quite nicely! This has to be one of my favorite tunes, it just strikes a chord deep.

  • Comment removed

  • I was born at the wrong time.....would have loved to fall in love to music like this. it is haunting, isn't it?

  • You would have loved everything about being alive back then... Except for Vietnam, and the riots of various causes, that somehow tainted what was a great era.. An era that will eventually be forgotten, except for it's music. The quality of life had a different flavor back then.

  • Yes angel is was a wonderful time. Fantastic memories, except Viet Nam era. Already being forgotten. Homefront, below, doesn't even realize it was NOT my choice to go in the army. He's not even aware of the draft and the horror of being a male teenager facing the draft and that war after you graduated.

  • love this tune

  • is that Ringo Star

  • Yep. :-)

  • it was your choice to go in the army but if it makes you feel better by saying you had to then keep doing it, as for pam the old money grabber, dont think for a second shes ever missed you because she has'nt, you was never in her league.

  • cynical

  • Oh does this bring back memories of Pam and my love for her. 40 years later I still love her and only wish I had not had to go into the army, as I lost her then. Not her fault. I told her to go live her life as I might never come back. When I came back I wanted to play for a time and be irresponsible and I did just that. She finished college and got married . We met at our 40th class reunion last summer and our eyes told us both that we were still madly in love. We both departed with sad eyes.

  • Love it.

And u can tell he still loves singing this song

This wouldnt sound as good if if was modernised

  • Yes, young and innocent! but not after! God I miss those years!!

  • Just beautiful, takes me back to the 60s when I was young and innocent,

  • How haunting and sadly beautiful. All the sweet and sometimes tragic mystery of being in love. The words don't have to make sense exactly, but they do.

  • Still, a Quality performer, the voice hasnt changed, its strange! and of course beautiful!

  • nice

  • Listen to this about every night before I go to bed. Love it. Relaxing. Brings back many many many memories from my youth.

  • i'm still in love with this song!

  • Great version Gary. I went shopping with you in Finland when I supported Eric Clapton on his Scandinavian tour on a day off. You were on keyboards for Eric. Much love - Fran Raya xx.

  • im related to gary never met him though

  • Does anyone know a newer version of this song, the organ sounds a bit too old for me... but there is no dount that this is an amazing performance.... I tyhink it would be interesting to hear an electric lead

  • Quality!!

  • nice songs from Procol Harum ,you wont forget the nice melody

  • Nice performance from Gary of this song!!

  • Love this layed back tune always caught my ear when I was a kid. Met Gary at Jools Hollands Hootananny 2001.Had to shake the guys hand. One of the all time greats.

  • Sometimes it sounds like he sings: I'm in looooove, love in ladyboys

  • Peter Frampton on guitar...

    Ringo Starr on drums

    did you idjits know that?

Stop you whinnin' and groove on Baby Groove on..

    Saw Procol 3 times...all in Toronto...so there

  • It's almost good. Not as good as original organist.

  • Outstanding

  • Wow gold :) Thanks for sharing.

5 stars and added to favorites

  • soy un humilde fanatico latino de esta bella cancion q me hace recordar bellos momentos de mi vida ya pasada Gracias a la persona q me a permitido evocar esos bellos recuerdos mil gracias

  • Brooker definitely kept his voice all these years. You listen to some of the singers now of that era and they can hardly hold a tune.

  • solid show a few years back.... ringo always gets an elite group of musicians to back him on tour... in this gig... alongside gary brooker and mark rivera is... jack bruce and peter frampton.. to name a few

  • Nice~!

  • What is ringo doing there? he´s a terrible drummer.

  • Ringo isn't a great drummer but he has a great importance in creating Heatle sound. You must listen to some songs as "A Hard day's Night" and you'll understand. George Martin said that has in studio, in the meantime, Ringo and Steve Gadd, with the same drums. Ringo, had a particular sound, different from other drummers.

  • no doubt about it, i just hate when he plays along other drummers at the same time, i find it kind of insecure

  • You find it insecure when he or two drummers play together? That's an idiotic statment.

  • oh no! another psycho-beatle fan who believes there is nothing greater than them, be objetive, the guy can´t play the drums, he was never as good as the rest of the beatles, you can see it in every live performance, and have you ever noticed that real drummers love so much their jobs that they would never play along someone else? there is no need to do that, thats not only quality, thats passion for music. He is very important in music history but that has nothing to do with his poor talent.

  • "that real drummers love so much their jobs that they would never play along someone else?"

Boy that statement is just about as stupid as a comment as I've ever heard. DRUM solo!

So, who do you think is a good drummer? And again, I never said that The Beatles were perfect all the time. But name me one GROUP who had a bigger influence on everyone else. Go ahead..

  • if you keep saying that my comments are estupid maybe it is because you are the one who is insecure, so i wont waste another second of my time with you "boy" so long.

  • nah, I'm fine...I'd worry about your spelling there bruh'...

  • Figures, got nothin' else brilliant to say, takes his marlbles and goes home. I would love hear what rock drummers you think are great AND inventive.

  • KISS sorry I had to. You kinda left it open, and I had to take it. Please don't chew my head off, I don't want to get into a debate over who is greater, they're all great and had their own contributions that will never be forgotten.

  • In 1963 most rock drummers sucked. Ringo is an old man now but in the day he wasn't bad.

  • If you understood anything about drums, what to play and not to play, you'd realize that Ringo was a great and inventive drummer. Listen to his work on "Tomorrow Never Knows" "Rain" "Something". Great stuff.

  • O man,Love this song..Does it come in instumental as well?

  • ........il lento dei lenti ..... 1967

  • summer of love must have been fun.yes the best music so far came from the 60,70s no doubt about that.i was born in 61 it was great growing up hearing this stuff on the radio,i feel lucky to have grown up in the 60,70s the times were alot cooler

  • I love this song!

  • Sublime. Great version of this one!

  • This in one of favorites songs when I was a younger and happy boy...in middle 60s... Peace and Love, and the best music ever...60, 70s...

  • un seul mot : magnifique !

  • What year was this recording?

I so remember this some back in '69--

in Tay Ninh, S. Vietnam on UH-1 Huey Eagle Flights ..I was a door gunner back then based in Cu Chi--and we'd always play this back in the Club..

    GREAT MEMORIES

  • thats one of the best songs i remeber since i was a kid, it was old by then but i love to listen to it .

  • I dont know if you understand me but....

Esta cancion la bailare el dia de mi boda....

    ME encanta te amo veonica

  • I think his voice sounds even better, richer.

  • Did you notice the guest drummer (about 4:20)it appears to be none other than Mr. Richard Starkey, late of another famous Brit band, aka Ringo Starr.

  • duhhh....

  • this was Ringos All Starr band in like 2000 or something

I swear Mark Rivera (the guy sitting next to Gary Brooker) can play anything

  • It`s amazing how his voice sounds the same.

  • Like this one ?

Do a search for " A salty dog" if you can only find the song but not the video it is worthit !! Another Brooker Great!

  • Used to dance to this tune with my husband while we dated, now listen to this while our youngest son is on his 3rd tour of duty to Iraq

  • god bless your son and may the lord watch him over him and return him safely to your arms...
