A little bit of advice for you both? I'd say only ride the bus between Dusk and Dawn don't ride it after it gets dark you'll run into alot of the wrong kinds of people. Best thing to do about them? Get an ipod and chill while waiting for your stop...or a PSP or DS...anything portable really...except a pocket vibrator..those dont really count :P jk jk. I had to throw a joke in there somewhere.

Locally produced biofuel is much better, but there is no way we could grow enough biofuel locally to meet the current local energy demands. The best thing for most people will be to find more energy-efficient modes of transit, and public transit fills that role perfectly.

Of course, you can always make public transit run on locally produced biofuel. Best of both worlds. :)

Biofuel? One of the worst concepts ever. The energy demand of first world countries is so great that land to grow fuel will compete with land to grow food, which will lead to starvation in third world countries. And of course the land to grow these huge monocultures of biofuel crops all comes from burnt rain forest, so it's actually destroying carbon traps and HURTING the environment...

That is a myth. Have you ever researched the amount of energy used to manufacture batteries? It's miniscule compared to what is used to make the rest of the car, and the amount of fuel the car will consume in its lifetime will account for far more emissions than what was used to make it. Takes about 12 barrels of oil to make a car. That same car will use about 400 barrels of oil in its 150,000 mile life just for fuel. Land Rovers even more.

Electric cars, if getting their electricity from a coal plant(the dirtiest source), produce about 50% less CO2 than a comparable gas car, and > 90% reduction in particulates, CO, NOx, and other emissions. From wind and solar, they are pollution free(aside from what was generated making these things, which is again small). 45% of America's oil consumption is for automobile fuel. Electrics can eliminate this entirely. EVs aren't the best solution, but they will certainly help.

If enough people are on the bus at a given time, the per passenger miles per gallon will be much higher than in a car. Everything we do has impact, but some things have greater overall environmental impact than others. You're right about CO2 emissions and industry, but cars are still a large part of the total, no matter how you look at it, and they are the lowm hanging fruit that can be plucked to reduce CO2 and other emissions if their fuel soure is changed to something sustainable.
