This is the memorable version. It doesn't matter, that a Jewess wrote it. It feels black, gettin' those Southern feelings' flowing like the endless hope of the American Negress and concommitant despair. The Monkees are a rehash of Bob Stigwood's
overpaying for the services of Bobby Hart and Tommy Boyce.
@mrniggerbaiter YOUR FLAMING ASSHAT VALUES ARE NOTED. DIPSHIT THANKS FOR THE LAUGH.. AND LEST YOU BE MADE AN EXAMPLE OF.. JUST FUCK OFF AND KEEP WALKING.
@TheBestLoser... This song was written by Carl King. The Monkees were a made for TV group, somewhat disdained in the 70's as such - although in retrospect some of it is OK. Their version seems extremely, even overly polished and tin pan alley to me - Taj's (and Carol's) show the emotion underlying the song.
But, de gusitus non disputandum est - there's no disputing taste....
@paradigm918 Totally disagree with you. This version is absolutely horrible, almost painful to listen to. The Monkees were more than okay, they were fantastic.
taj mahal...one of the alltime greats...super under-appreciated....his music is pure, honest, down-home goodness...i just can't get enough, and i grew up on it...it brings back so many feelings i can't listen to this as a blank slate...this is real music. from the heart.
C'mon, take a giant step, we do this daily, and trust is where we show it...love all sentient beings, may we all take that giant step with ease and equanimity...
Bought this album in SF September 1969 on way home from Saigon. Taj was one of the best things about those years. Saw him/met him in Vancouver in 1970 when he was traveling with his 'large band'. Another case of an artist's fame not nearly approaching/reflecting his true greatness.
'69, yeah! Too bad you weren't there in October, man. You'd have seen him live with Jesse Ed at the Fillmore playing this song.
Jesse Ed played that Fender Jazzmaster with a very tricky pinky action to the volume control to make it sound just like a pedal steel guitar. That is not a pedal steel you hear on this cut, it's a Fender. Man, what a wonder that music was to behold.
@macvoutie totally agree! I was so lucky to have been around when this came out hahahahaha kinda old now!!! Saw him in Juneau once in the 80s. I just love him!!
cool
