  • Woah woah woah, why is Denton a girl? This is not right...

  • why is Denton suddently a girl? lol

  • my fav line was always spot conlons line "porcelain tub with boilin' warta " but they changed it, :( New take on shows like this is what helps keep newsies spirit alive!

  • omg they change the lyrics! Nooooooo, oh well guess us newsies will have to learn the new lyrics.

  • This takes place during the gilded age, which was an age of reforms. One was the workers' reform-- IE people creating unions and ensuring their workers (particularly children) basic rights. sound familiar? Yes. It's the plot of Newsies. Another reform that happened simultaneously was the womens' rights movement. So, having a girl reporter struggling in the business on account of she's not a man is not only true to the era, but also helps strengthen the theme of the show. boom. history'd.

  • @TommyOrdster But the women's rights movement wouldn't find it's success for another few decades, so she seems a little out of place. I have a strong feeling it's less about adding history and more about adding estrogen. Dont' get me wrong, it could be a good thing, I don't want to pass judgement before I see more of it. Aaaaand Guild reference, woot! Aknowledge'd

  • What a bunch of garbage.

  • I guess we newsie fans have to learn the new lyrics as well as keep the origenals alive.

    SEIZE THE DAY!!!!

  • Is this supposed to be the pollitacaly correct version. What the F! It is like putting a guy in the orphanage of Annie! No way....this sux.

  • For those of you hate this version of Newsies, let me ask you something. Do you want the stage version of Newsies to be a flop as the movie version? Of course you don't! I don't mind they change the storyline and change some of the lyrics. They're trying change storyline to make it more smoother than the movie. So I suggest you guys, get use to it!

  • Interesting to note, the movie this muisical is based on actually was actually not well-recieved by critics and was a "box office bomb" when initially released, but did find some popularity years later. (according to one source I read)

  • @frankydman Let's be honest. That source was Wikipedia.

  • @BandNerd06Forever

Ok, you got me. But if you look at the numbers, it was a "box office bomb" (Made around 2.8 million, but cost 15 million to make. It didnt even make back 20% of the budget)

  • @frankydman I'm aware of that. I'm just sayin' that if you tried to cite that on a research paper you'd probably have been kicked out for plagarism ;-D On a side note, you should also take into account the cult status it gained after its premier in theaters, not just the original box office numbers. Look at Firefly, it was cancelled after 14 episodes, but they turned it into a movie years later because of its popularity.

  • They really didn't need to change any lines or make Denton a girl!

  • WHOA WHOA WHOA!!! they have a girl for denton? NO! i have a feeling im not gunna like this

  • i am super excited to see this, because it's a new take on my favorite movie!

  • newsies for the win

  • @mmcgrath1380 that girl IS the journalist

  • Aaron Albano is amazing <3

  • this totally ruined the movie! i wanted to see this on broadway but this suckkkks who's with me!!!!??????

  • I don't understand why they had to change all those words...the original ones were fine...

  • omg i love the tap soooooooo much

  • Did anyone see Evan Kasprzak from SYTYCD???

  • @GLUTEN88 Yep. Front and center too. Well done Evan, well done. <3

  • .... I'd marry every single one of them.

  • Anyone here protest of using Newsies a limited run? Because doing a limited run on Broadway is stupid idea!

  • "Gonna make the Delancey's pee in their pantsies"? Quite the vocabulary for a bunch of 30 year old guys....

  • I wish people would understand some things that work well on screen simply can't be pulled off on stage and vice versa. Obviously this musical is not going to be the exact word-for-word replica of the movie, but it still holds true to the basic story we all fell in love with as kids.

  • The king of new york was supposed to be that journalist not some girl. And all the newsies look to old.

  • MAN! She's cute AND talented. MY KIND OF GIRL! I really wish I could be in NY to see this.

  • they are suppose to be teenage boys, not 30 year olds

  • @imYOUNG4ever Too True... Why does everyone keep giving parts to older people than they're supposed to be? But in relevence to the movie, those "kids" are definately lying about their ages. ^_^

  • @rachaelversaw true,

  • @rachaelversaw because of child labor laws. If they can get ppl who look young to play younger characters, the less they have to worry about going against the laws. For example, I'm in a lot of plays and I'm 27 but usually play a teen because I LOOK like I can be 14-17. Hope that helps...obviously they couldn't do much about Les (the kid) but oh well.

  • Love the new reporter.

    New lyrics? Not so much...

Although I do enjoy the "so let's get drunk!" line.

  • @Warblerette007 well they couldn't with the new reporter use the line "A saturday night with the mayors daughter" now could they

  • @LeighMet Well, they could have. It was Blink's line. I mean, I don't hate the new lyrics or anything, some needed to be changed, but I think they could have saved themselves some work if they'd only changed the ones that really needed it.

  • Alan you sellout. So effin mad right now.

  • im kind of sad that the lyrics changed. but ill take it! better than nothing! its on broadway YAY!

  • Actually don't mind the new version, but I really wish they kept "A porcelain tub with boilin wada" because that's when I fell in love with Spot Conlon...

  • They Ruin the Movie

  • that is fucken not the song

  • @mathman1903 What do you mean it's not the song?

  • WTF? SHE'S the King of New York?

  • @thinkgood I know they could simply say queen of new york

  • @udelgrl sorry that I sounded rude I just retread it and it was rude sounding

  • @ultimatemusicfan28 they had to mix some things for it to work on broadway...act II needs to open strong and king of the new york is one of the stronger songs. and medda's song was the worst song of the movie, it was even voted the worst song of 1992...the new song she sings is much better..hope that answers some of your questions

  • Obsessed: Kara Lindsay belt speaking “Let’s get drunk”… Can’t get enough of 1:36

  • this new version is so stupid i love the older version better

  • This made me cry. I miss Broadway so much.

  • "Wid a sour pickle"

  • I have to admit- this is quite a number they put together... but I'm just slightly offended that they didn't keep the old lyrics. I mean yes, obviously it was going to have to change for the stage version... but did anyone else feel it? I didn't grow up with Newsies, I only discovered it a few years back, but as much as I want to see it hit Broadway, and even if Christian Bale is in the old one, I don't think I'd like the live action as much as the movie <3

  • @XNewsiesX Totally agree. I also hate some of the new lyrics like "Pee in their pantsies". Is that really the best they could give us?

  • the old version is better

  • Love the movie, Christian Bale , Ivan Dudynsky!- This looks very good too!

  • this Newiese looks good

  • @stephen1102 I meant Jack Kelly is in the song King of New York.. and they guy singing it here is not acting like Jack Kelly should.

  • did anyone else see the straight up wizardry at 2:20??

  • @stephen1102 he is in the movie

  • i love this just as much as the original but i have to say... WTF HAPPEND TO THE LYRICS!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?

  • Omg people. I love Newsies just as much as the next over-the-top fansie, but don't you want Newsies to be successful on Broadway? Isn't that what all the fansies want? I admit, before I saw it at the papermill, I was skeptical, but after flying clear across the country and seeing it, I liked it. Not as much as the movie, but it still fulfilled one of my life's dreams. And it was a success at the papermill! Newsies is getting another chance! It will never be the same as the movie, so deal with i

  • noooo no no no. this is not newsies.

  • @thejuddnasty its newsies just slightly altred

  • this was the best performance at the parade!!! idk what you guys are talking about!!! just imagine if you didn't know about the movie (i didnt when hey did this).....they did pretty amazing!!!! im hooked on newsies now!!!! i REALLY hope they make a cast album and i wish they got to be on broadway for a longer period of time :'( but at least they will be on broadway :)

  • @MrOrlando12345 I agree! Seeing this on Thanksgiving Day totally got me hooked on Newsies, too! I really want to see it on Broadway!! XD

  • ruined it.

  • The movie is better..... :/

  • at 1:33 is that les?

  • @Darklight170 Yes, it is!

  • Only thing I'm worried about is jack Kelly. If it was the same guy who sang his lines in this version. He needs to man up! Jack Kelly was all male, not a nerd

  • @udelgrl Then why does the other kid want a permanent box at the Sheepshead races if he isn't Racetrack. This is why i don't like remakes. Too confusing!!!!

  • @tinkermanga idk ask alan menken!

  • And there's my ex.... Great Job Everyone.

  • I'm assuming the one that said a permanent box at the sheepshead races was Racetrack and that would mean they ruined the whole song for me cause Racetrack is my fav

  • @tinkermanga the guy who starts the song is racetrack

  • I want to be in a Newsies production... I'll turn into a boy, I swear I'll try.

  • wow this feels so sterile, Ortega's orginal version was so much more energetic, hope this pans out better on stage...

  • i don't know how i feel about the new version yet...im still debating

  • NEWSIES!!! LOVE THIS MUSICAL!!!!!!! I LOVE THE MOVIE TOO!!!

  • I want to see this sooo bad!!! It just confuses me why they would change the lyrics to the songs when there great?

  • @tetx678 Because, unless you're a perfectionist like Stephen Sondheim, lyrics are never as good as they could be.

  • I got to see it live. I am like right behind the camera

  • I was so upset that I didn't wake up in time to watch the parade but sooo glad you have put this up so I could watch it!!! I LOVE the newsies.

  • iI'm the kid who dressed up as a newsie on Movie Monday at my school and went around singing "the world will know" while handing newspapers to random people :)

  • this looks okay

  • So at 1:12, what does it sound like the kid is saying?

  • @johnfoltz1 At 1:12 the boy's singing, "My very own bed and indoor toilet." I didn't understand him either at first.

  • I know the guy that sings the first note in the song. :D So proud of him.

  • Denton isn't a girl! She's a different character.

  • this is one of my favorite movies of all time and i was so excited to hear that it was coming to Broadway but they just ruined it for me...... ;(

  • I, for one, like the chick in the new version. If she wasn't there, the whole show would be a complete sausage-fest. Plus, she has two of the better songs that were added IMO.

  • The cast is the only reason why this show works. The book is adolescent & some of the songs stink. The "dancing" is often merely play-ground tumbling team rough-housing. The on -stage espirit & chemistry amongst the line rescues this production from a CW pilot episode that was never picked up. If they recast it w/o Jeremy Jordan, Ry Breslan & Ry Steele I fear for the results.

  • Can't wait for newies on Bway even with the changes

  • Fab! It looks like a wonderful show!!

  • i'm not a total fan about the changes but it still gives me the chills and i am def seeing it on braodway. i love how they tap.. if i could learn the their tap dance my life would be complete

  • Comment removed

  • Interesting that the reporter is female in this version and a male in the film. It's a weird change, but with that dance, I can live with it! Can't wait for it to be a Broadway hit!

  • yay ben!!!

  • LYRIC CHANGEEEEE UGHHHHH. Still good though! <3

  • 2 people will never be King of New York!

  • @darreyl102 Make that 4!

  • @darreyl102 9 people

  • I am auditioning for the show in a couple of days. *fingers crossed*

  • kinda sad they changed the lyrics.... but im excited to see this musical

  • A Great Song ! Clever Choreography! I have choreographed tap to it also. I'm glad it a live show now heading to the Great White Way!! Good Luck!! Would love to see it!!

    NLP

  • Is this gonna be on broadway? I really wanted to see it at papermill playhouse but I wasn't able to. If its gets on broadway will WILL go!

  • @princesspie7 It is going to Broadway! Youre in luck!!! google newsies musical for ticket info!

  • immma have to get used to thiss....I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS MOVIE

  • To everyone who is hating they did this production just like every other movie turned broadway. They cant do some things they do in a movie on the stage so they change it to better fit the extended story of the new show. It is just as good as the movie so quit being close minded and give the broadway actors a chance to wow you. Plus the new lyrics make the song better and longer and katherines character shows off how woman were shown in this era not just newsies.

  • @ChrisRHS2011 But women weren't reporters in that era...

  • @Hieifireshadow Actually, that's not correct. Katherine's character is inspired by Nellie Bly- a female journalist around that time period.

  • Comment removed

  • one person isn't the king of new york....

  • I AM SOOOOOOOOO EXCITED THAT THIS IS FINALLY COMING TO BROADWAY! I don't care about the lyric changes or any of that nonsense. I'm just glad that this is going on stage, and anyone who loves Newsies should be happy too

  • You know, honestly, I could care less about the lyrics changes- except the line about being drunk and the line about the Delancy's- But they completely botched the history of the 1900s. Women weren't reporters. And they ate the plot in such a weird way that it doesn't look like it works. Where is Jack, why the heck is Crutchy still there, and how come half of them can barely sing the correct notes? Don't get me wrong, I love Newsies, but I'm worried about its future.

  • @Hieifireshadow crutchy isn't in this performance at all??

  • @korslvr22 Okay, my bad- I wasn't actually staring at the screen the whole time, so I automatically assumed that the guy with the random stick was Crutchy. Should've payed more attention, sorry.

  • DYING OF FANGIRL! I love everything about this. They changed just enough to freshen the story and adapt it for the stage while keeping true to the spirit of the movie without copying it. Tumblr Newsies Community FOREVER!

  • They must be so cold.

  • @shawnyzg

Completely agree with you on the girl. Doesn't work. Makes it silly to me. And the realism of the era is lost. This from a girl!👎

  • Her name is Kara Lindsay. I'm pretty sure

  • who was the girllll????? someone tell mee i have a name in mind but i need to knoww!!

  • I am a BIG Fansie and in love with Ryan Breslin!!! <3 Couldn't be more excited to get tickets to see them on Broadway in MARCH! :) INCREDIBLE!

  • LOL @ 3:27. Lip synch much?

Still gotta love Newsies, though. <3

  • Hey, I would give this a chance. It's actually really amazing live from what I've heard from people who have seen. You can't judge a musical by one song.

  • some complaints 1: why the hell did they change the lyrics, 2: not to sound sexist or anything, but why a female reporter, it completely changes the feel and the atitude of the song, 3: WHERE THE HELL IS JACK half fail on this one

  • any sytycd fans? cuz evan from season 5 is in this!!!

also, does anyone know the actress' name?!?! she looks soooo familiar!

  • Is the lady supposed to be Denton?

  • Comment removed

  • Jack wasn't in this number because apparently Jeremy Jordan wasn't a terrific dancer and would bring the rest of them down so they changed this part a little bit

  • When is it premiering on broadway???

  • Any idea why try changed the lyrics? And which one is jack?

  • My favorite part is Jeremy Jordan and Andrew Keenan-Bolger.

  • i don't remember taps. Hope they keep it classic!

  • was that first guy supposed to be mush?! the one who says "a pair of new shoes with matching laces" .....disappointment. no offense mush was just the hottest one in the movie hahahaha

  • what's with the dame?

  • @stephen1102 Oh okay that's what I thought. Thanks for the conformation.

  • Love the movie, love this show.. newsies fan forever!

  • Are they actually singing this live? Everyone's commenting as if they are but they sound mighty loud to have no visible mics.

  • I know the guy who sings first. I was like OH.MY.GOD I KNOW THAT GUY when I saw him!

  • I hope to see this! This was an awesome song! Now what about all the other songs..... =P

  • This is perfection.

  • This is just... not the same. So disappointed!

  • This is going to be a Tony Winning Musical and Disney can forget the limited engagement.

  • Waitaminute...WHERE'S CRUTCHY?!

  • @BroadwayPirate1106 He'd already been taken by the Delanceys at this point Sucks, I really wanted to see him too...

  • @BroadwayPirate1106 uh... he's in the refuge.

  • @BroadwayPirate1106 by this time in the show crutchy is already in the refuge

  • Comment removed

  • I want to see this so badly, but like these boys I have no money!

  • I miss Denton

  • evan kasprzak love seeing u perform

  • In my opinion the musical took everything that was wrong with the movie and made it great, filling in a lot of holes and turning it into a truly great musical.

  • The important thing is that "Newsies" lives!

  • Let me tell you, I have been waiting for this for 19 years. I went to see it at the Papermill, and it was the most amazing thing I have ever seen!! The changes not only made sense, but actually made the story better!! I know a lot of people were disappointed when they heard the changes, but when they saw it, they totally agreed with them!! I was just sitting there in awe!! Absolute perfection!!! (And the whole cast was super sweet!! Very humble and just happy to be there!!)

  • I miss Denton :\

  • I'm glad they changed it up a bit, it wouldn't be as exciting to go sit and see the exact performance I've seen in the movie a million times. I'm so excited, hopefully they tour!

  • Saw this at Paper Mill best show I've ever seen!!!!!

  • <33333333333 saw it at Papermill and cannot WAIT to see this a million times on Broadway!! =)

  • Fansies! if you haven't seen the actual production at papermill you have NO IDEA how amazing it is...WITH the changes needed to adapt it to stage. the boys are incredible, the songs are just as great and they did the movie justice! lyric changes? yeah there are some. denton to katherine? yeah there's that too. But i can guarantee you when you're watching THAT cast perform on THAT amazing stage, you won't even notice it, let alone care! Give it a shot, lordy people you will NOT be disappointed!!

  • @korslvr22 it was AMAZING live!

  • @korslvr22 Is there still a Spot Conlon?

  • @SweetieXoX27 ofcourse! there's also a new 'here comes brooklyn' song that's amazing as well!! xx

  • @korslvr22 Totally agreed! The adjustments they made throughout the Papermill Playhouse run really make it a phenomenal and fun show. And Katherine is probably my new favorite character--she really adds to the story in my opinion! It is a bit odd AT FIRST if you loved the movie because some songs were moved around, added, changed lyrically, or cut (e.g. My Lovey Dovey Baby) but the changes/cast completely won me over. It's a more complete show and it never loses the best parts of the movie.

  • Are you KIDDING ME?! 40 percent of these lyrfics were not iin the original...lol.

  • <3

  • This is crap! This Disney movie is much better. They changed the words to my favorite soundtrack, and my favorite SONG on the soundtrack, that I couldn't even sing along. I'm really disappointed that they didn't keep to the original.
