  • I took astronomy and wouldn't doing that whole create a star on earth just mess the atmosphere which is keeping harsh rays of sun from killing life on earth? I mean there's obviously a reason why stars aren't made in planets...shouldn't scientists stop wasting time, energy and money and find a cure to something instead?

  • @CoreChick But did you major in physics and astronomy? Maybe you should get a deeper understanding than an into astronomy class. Nothing will happen

  • @CoreChick No. Stars aren't made in planets because there's no natural way for that to happen. There's a reason humans can't fly, but that doesn't mean you should never get in a plane. Obviously this is going to be in a shielded reactor chamber, we're not breeding baby stars and setting them lose in the wild or something silly like that. And clean energy IS a cure to something - dirty energy that is killing life on earth.

  • its 2012 so does that mean theyre gonna do the star thing?

  • @i7887 You are the definition of prick.

  • @Kracker5000 Did i make you mad?

  • Im in this video :P

  • Hey, here's a thought; let's build the potentially world ending artificial star IN SPACE! You know, because space has a good track record of taking care of that kind of thing. And I don't care how you justify it, if it DOES go wrong and you cannot contain your reaction properly, we have just created a star on the face of a planet.

  • im no scientist but a bunch of lasers crating a star sounds like something could go wrong

  • @infinityis0 No, you aren't a scientist

  • Waitwaitwaitwait.

If we created a sun wouldn't we just be making a real Spiderman movie?

  • @KALAtheKIWI That design made me weep. The only thing keeping it from blowing up is a cyborg holding out his robo-hands to stop bits from flying out? And all it took was a bump to the glass bit on the top of his robot assembly to give the AI access to his brain? How does a scientist this smart not understand the idea of shielding?

  • Science is awesome, and I'm excited about it. It only sounds scary to people who don't understand the background and only have the glossy, inaccurate pop-sci overview to work with.

  • DAMNIT SCIENCE! Stop scheduling all of your dangerous-sounding projects for 2012! Seriously, you guys must be doing this on purpose.

  • he is toataly mistrepresenting this This is the HIPER project, by shooting lasers at a pellet they superheat it so much the expantion crushes the atoms in the center together so hard the fuse, fusion creates energy, maybe a way to solve our dependece on fossil fuel and it could work by 2012

    THATS BRILLIANT.

ALSO though fusion is also the way stars run it will be about the size of a pea as opposed to a star 1000 time the size of earth.

    CHILL out.

  • @sakkarinahp Yeah, I spent the whole video thinking "create a star and power the earth? could he possibly mean fusion?" Glad someone else is on it.

  • it's our fault that we're energy whores. and now we're blaming other people for trying to satisfy our needs.

  • Bad idea.... Very bad idea.

  • @EggheadJr1 incorrect

  • I don't think it would work. Aside from the energy possibly destroying many things, I'm more worried about it's gravitational pull collapsing part of the planet. Size does not equal gravity, it's density. (Yes size can play a part, eg: Jupiter being a bunch of gas) There are black holes smaller than our moon that cause devastation. Let's use are own star the Sun, which has been throwing free money in our faces for centuries!

  • @glassesfreak You realize that equation for gravitational force doesnt have density in it, right? Its dependent only on mass and how far you are from it. And since we know how much gas is being compressed we know how incredibly negligible the gravitational force would be. Please open up a physics book before you start talking because you sound really ignorant.

  • Ok, if this works it could be like pandora's pithos. Leave it alone and use the energy correctly, we'll be fine. Mess with it, we die

  • I think they r gonna make the star then dumbass 14 yearold is gonna walk in like hey grandpa i made a bomb that didnt- BOOM! End of the world

  • a) that guy in the video response will give me nightmares.

    b) wow, could scientists be more retarded? just because when they created the atom smasher in new york's brookhaven national laboratory, it was successful. doesn't mean that every massive experiment they do will work. ''hey guys, wow, Earth is still here. lets try something even more dangerous and stupid and see what happens next...'' you can only be successful for so long until you blow the Earth up. friggen morons.

  • @IAMashlin0102003 Because physicists are pretty good at physics and we know how much energy will be produced and that it wont destroy the world. You are a friggen moron.

  • so that's what will end the world in 2013 +- 9 days :)) and I thought it was solar flares upgrading our DNA so we become light beings ;)

  • its like the curious kitty gunna get its paws blown off!

  • actually fun fact. Stars die faster if they are bigger. This means that the small stars in the Universe could have been burning since shortly after the expansion following the big bang. Interesting because one small enough to be contained on earth would more than likely burn for so long that it would outlive the star that is created out of the dust of our sun when it dies several times over.

The reason being that small stars use their "fuel" more slowly to maintain themselves.

    I know 6 months

  • @indigo1563 You realize how wrong you are, right? Small stars to stay on the main sequence for longer. But one small enough to be on Earth would only last a very short amount of time. The goal is to create a continuous "stream" of "stars" because they only last fractions of seconds.

  • So whats the name of the theme song? :(

  • Huh... I just think that it's retarded that we're spending billions of dollars on this project and we still haven't found a cure for cancer... I wouldn't have a problem with us finding new ways of blowing ourselves up if we could just spend the same amount of money on advancing our medical technology...

  • @Raiku49 Solving the worlds energy needs in a 100% clean way is a terrible idea. You also realize that cancer research DOES get billions of dollars in funding EVERY year.

    funding-programs.idilogic.aidpage.com

Look up cancer treatment research funding and don't open your mouth when you have no idea what you are talking about.

  • its not that kinda star. there is no possible for this to become a blackhole. this star thing is great. if any of you would do research before freaking out, you wouldn't post dumb comments. go back to physics you mongoloids.

  • WHAT IS THE BEGINNING MUSIC?!??!?

  • So i would like everyone to see Spider Man and that is about my best knowledge of how this whole star thing is going to go.

  • I'm excited because one laser is going to miss and blow the fuckin' moon to pieces.

  • oook does it excite me or scare me that science is trying to create a mini star which eventually will die, im 13 and recently figured i might die in 2012, do i sound excited to you?

  • blahbitty blah blah SCARY!

    1 billion atmospheres?

WHERE ARE THEY GOING TO PUT THIS THING?

  • @doomlightning13 In a magnetic field?

  • creating a star on a planet, huh. I don't know why but I think I feel my bullshit sense tingling. Besides even if someone was fucking stupid enough to attempt something like that and smart enough to pull it off I don't think they would release that information out of fear of having they're project shutdown by the spoil sports of the world know as rational people. Of course if this is on the level and the world is actually allowing this to happen well then we deserve what we get for being so dumb

  • @guerillamagic888 You don't know much about physics do you?

  • Ha ha ha "The Curious kitty cat going to get its paws blown off"

  • what about that thing where they said we might accidentially create a mini black hole and so on... I DONT think it will kill us, just the fear of the unknown. Heck i cant wait for it to happen, the sun thingy, cause it sounds awesome.

  • Definitely exciting, stuff like that is up on my list of most important things that humans can do. Pretty much any science stuff that can help us to better understand our universe is what I consider to be important. I think they should try to make it as safe as possible if they are going to do it, and I'm sure that they do make things like that as safe as possible, but even if it weren't possible to make it safe, I'd probably still be on the side saying "Go for it!"

  • Mini star= no super nova. Mini star = little poof. Probably. Unless it becomes a supermassive blackhole probably destroying everything in the solar system. You never know with the Internet.

  • I'm scared I just think they r dumb b/c if it does explode (20 million years later) or when they r experimenting were skrewd

  • So im both scared&excited the pros of this being the possiblity of a single energy source hundreds or thousands of times more efficent and effective than anything we currently have, the beginning of a new age.Cons: greedy fat cats being greedier, the energy turning us into zombies tht rnt exactly nazis or robots but r stil evil, IT DESTROYING US ALL, some1forcibly taking hold of the energy and making dangerous threats to the world(coughterrorismcough), the end of life as we....and any1else..knows

  • yeah, ummmm.....when the star dies, (if i remembure correctly) it commenly becomes a supernova, which is basicaly a huge explosion. so the supernova WON'T kill people OR destroy things? ummm....science? i love you, but are you SURE nobody will get killed????? C:

  • @biscuitsNzombies If a star is below 1.38 solar masses when it runs out of fuel it will turn into a white dwarf and just slowly cool down. I would hope that this experiment wouldnt be 38% larger than our Sun.... Yes science is SURE that nobody will get killed. Zero chance of a supernova

  • it will because the sun is a star witch is a big ball of FIRE and what feeds tire AIR and seeing thats its in our atsmophire it word grow probbally instantly (i estmate half the size of earth in 3 to 4 weeks roasting the ENTIRE FREEKING PLANET

  • Actually the lhc could create 50 black holes and not one. So it's nothing to worry about xD

  • Phil, normally I enjoy your videos, but for fuck sake! This shit about making a star that will kill us all? Smacks of ignorance of the highest level.

Hell, better stop your kids from taking that vaccine, because scientists are OUT TO KILL US ALL WITH THEIR CRAZY (Lifesaving/medicine derived/electrically powered) CURES!

LETS BURN THEM AT THE STAKE BECAUSE SCIENCE IS MAGIC AND MAGIC IS OF THE DEVIL!

  • @Lollocide You reak of ignorance of the highest level

  • @i7887

Wow, you waited a year and had zero to say.

    Exquisite comment, bro.

  • so lets see, global warming, the melting of the polor ice caps, oil spills and genecide arent killing this world fast enough, so lets make a fuckin mini sun that can possibly DESTROY US ALL!!!!

  • @leskyan Except for when its powering your house for free

  • yew sound more like you went through the illuminati or a break up than anthing

the new star idea.. GG but no. lol definately going to be a waste of money

  • yew sound more like you went through the illuminati or a break up than anthing

the new star idea.. GG but no. lol definately going to be a waste of money

  • I'm excited, plus it'll keep everyone on their toes for the next million years starting 2 years from now. Plus, things might be like the 1950s envisioned the future.

  • haha this star on earth business sounds like the invention in spider man 2.

  • Yeah thanks to that stupid cat we're all screwed.

  • This guy is kinda funny, but very homosexual. He should stop pretending he is straight with his "friends" posing as his "girlfriends" and just come out of the closet, I would respect him much more....so Clay Aiken, are you prepared to come out yet???

  • @treyduke22 Apparently you didn't get the Memo, he DID come-out : [youtube address]/watch?v=REVFTZvugfU&feature=channel

Also I'm voting you Down for being a Jackass

  • omg guys you heard about that new parody channel coming out???? called tehparodys its gunna be awsome check it out give it some love and dont 4gt to sub for parodys coming soon

  • The philipdefranco nation is being retarded. By a star what they really are creating is a small speck of hydrogen that has a fusion reaction. The ball would not have enough gravity to a: roughly resemble a ball/sphere, or b: create a black hole/ supernovi.

  • @Flashfire97 Now see... your comment would have been so much better without that First sentence. Coincidentally I like to think I'm part of that Nation.

  • @neferiusnexus It is just that a quick scan of the comments did not unearth a singal comment in support of this being a good idea. I do not believe that you are stupid, dumb, or in any other way uneducated, but when a large mass of people belive one thing, that one good apple does not perfect the bunch.

  • @Flashfire97 So you do NOT believe I'm "[...]stupid, dumb, or in any other way uneducated," Wow, gee thank you ...you are so F*cking NICE.

  • @neferiusnexus uhhh... your welcome?

  • wow...theyre going to try to create a star on earth...fuckin idiots. if stars were meant to be on earth, THEY WOULD FUCKIN BE ON EARTH! good job scientists, way to add to the fear of 2012. if i die, im gonna haunt the shit out of those assholes.

  • @kellyrockssocks13 thats if they dont die too.

  • The star will most likely not react well with an atmoshpere..... The earths gravity will pull it toward the earth and make big boom? I'm sayin prolly not a good idea unless it is small and can be cnontained

  • ...Phil, are you fear mongering? How dares you D :

At the risk of sounding like I think I know what I'm talking about, I'd just like to point out that when a star dies it changes into those forms you mentioned based on mass. With very little mass, the mini-star has no way to collapse in on itself and become a black hole. 100 billion atmospheres also sounds dangerous, but pressure is force/area and the area is extremely small (5 microns according to the article) so the value is skewed.

  • Im scared shitless about the star thing i understood every thing about it

  • Probably going to get crap for this, but I just thought it a bit odd, coincidence really, that 2012 is when the world is supposed to end and that's when this mini-star is supposed to be completed. Just saying, it's kinda weird.

  • @isisorchid kinda okward how everythings falling into place now eh?

  • lol

  • Scientists have been coming up with new ways to end the world since the atom bomb was created. Crap, when they first built the hydrogen bomb, they predicted that it MIGHT set the atmosphere on fire... and they blew it up anyway...

  • Hell ya! Go for it! Does anyone really care if the world ends? It's not like you'll be missing out on anything while your dead... There's nothing left... Just a black hole

  • @QueCanada Well here is the thing, I actually do shit with my life. People who say it is pointless and won't miss anything have obviously done nothing their entire life except probably stay on there computer or play video games all day. Of course life wouldn't be different, cause you didn't have one. I like being alive, it is kinda fun actually.

  • @SuziG23 Good for you ...now what are you doing comenting on YouTube?

  • @neferiusnexus Telling people that think life is pointless that they have no lives to experience it. Seriously, not only fucking losers comment on youtube you know.

  • @SuziG23 Yeah, okay... you're probably right. It's just when you said that people who stay in front of a Computer screen all day are a bunch of no-life Losers, I guess that kinda' struck a nerve for me. Do you know how many People actually make a living through the Internet nowadays, and do you also know how many of those people spend their free time Blogging? I guess what i'm trying to say is Please don't be a up-nosed b*tch ...pretty please!

  • Can you please not build that thing on my planet? just curious..

  • I think Heidi Montags boobs will end the world.

They'll explode and we'd all suffocate under silicone.

  • Soooo "let's create a star on earth and see what happens?"...This feels like spiderman and shit is about to implode on us. I kinda like this earth...well not really but it keeps me alive and creating A BIG BALL OF HOT GAS THAT COULD POSSIBLY DESTROY IT....doesn't sound like my cup of tea....btw Don't we already have a star?...I believe its called the sun...can't we just...you know...use that energy?...Where is the star to be located btw? Just so i know which opposite side of the earth to move to

  • @jm3sb0nd007 Personally hoping out in the pacific ocean, under water somewhere.

  • i have fios too:D

  • Meh. We're all gonna die one day. Might as well be from a giant black hole.

  • @gladius900 I agree! Dying from a black hole together with 6 billion ppl at the same time is much more fun than dying in an average way. This was NOT sarcastic.

  • YES ASIAN GIRLS

  • I think that we shouldn't be trying to contain one of the most unstable sources of energy (in it's most primitive form) on the Earth, when there could be very, very, very, very bad consequences (black hole, supernova, etc.).

I mean, if we can't even land on Mars, which is the closest planet we know of that has an atmosphere and surface like Earth, then how do we expect to create a star, contain it, and make sure it doesn't kill everyone?

  • Pointing 190 lazers in 1 point to CREATE A STAR ...well that's just Stupid.

EVERYONE knows that in order to make a Star you need to make a certain ammount of Hidrogen IMPLODE. And to make that happen you need:

    a. 0-G, so that the Hidrogen atoms start getting atracted to each-other and nothing else.

    b. A BIG F***ing HUGE ammount of Hidrogen to achieve that all-important critical-mass.

Now how Exactly are these so-called scientists planning to create a mass-singularity out of Fotons is beyond me.

  • @neferiusnexus i think the goal is to make floating plasma.. not really a star. but a lookalike...

  • @neferiusnexus You didnt pay attention in science class did you?

    First, there is no implosion.

Magnetic fields hold the hydrogen in place. It only needs a "HUGE' amount of "Hidrogen"(hydrogen) if it occurs naturally, we are using lasers to provide the pressure.

How these "so-called scientists" are making this makes perfect sense now. Oh and WTF is a mass singularity of fotons? I never heard that once during my time getting my two degrees in physics and astronomy

  • Sometimes I just think that scientists are so stupid. "Hey guys, I've got a brilliant idea! Let's build something that could potentially blow up the planet and kill everyone!" "Great idea Bill!"

  • @mylifeisdance327 Sometimes, wait, always I think that the layperson is stupid. "Hey guys, I dont know anything about the subject, but im going to act like I do!" "You are good at that Jim!"

  • @judomudo Stars actually run by fusion, not fission

  • WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH HIS EYES!? And nose. And mouth. On closer inspection, his face is the weirdest fucking thing I've ever seen.

  • i heard that it takes more energy to power the star than the energy it provides and its been done before on smaller scales

  • im not afraid of those things. i just think that they'll probably kill us all

  • wheres the stars

  • I dunno whether to hate your shit, or like your shit, all i know is, you're funny as fuck....subbed!

  • I have a slight feeling that it will end badly and our planet will get it's "kitty cat paws blown off." So uh I'm really scared for that. Haha. I DON'T WANT TO DIE. :)

  • I wont to see if it dose works but at the same time i am like Noooooooo we should not be messing with that shit so only time will tell : /

  • Mine makes me do tripple backflips on my snowbaord and land on the head xD

  • Haven't these scientists seen Spiderman 2?! Unless there's a dude with four robot arms to take the "energy savior" down into the bottom of the sea if it backfires... I'm not too comfortable with the idea!

  • phil you know what internet made that kid want to build a bomb, you know what 34 is so you must know what rules 1@2 are and mustve been to where rules 1&2 speak of by now

  • "If you took a factor tree of all of the factors that made my girl to leave me, you'd have a tree, full of asian porn." Bo Burnham

  • lol sx is what is used instead of the word sex on things like runescape that doesnt let you say that stuff, and when you at the e, it sounds like sexy get it!?

  • First of all: It's not a star, Stars are huge uncontrolled fusion reactions this is a tiny highly controlled fusion reaction.

Second: When it dies it will do very little since it won't have enough mass or energy to do things a normal star does but it will release a fair amount of energy.

Why do news people have to go for the reactionary?

  • hahahaha 2012...because sane people really believe in 2012...................................the world's gonna end in 2013 retards

  • I think scientists are fucking awesome but there does come a point where you need to stop fucking with stuff . ex : Trying to create a star.

  • kill the rest of us

  • 1:23 lol......

  • @csaitos What's the problem? It was the only example I could think of at the time. I still can't think of any other mini-star disasters in popular culture. Do you have a better example in mind?

  • @livingsoul12066 That was pure fiction. The CQOTD was for a real case.

  • @csaitos Of course it was pure fiction. And even though I highly doubt a lab-kept mini-star could ever get to those proportions, it's kind of like the Hadron Super Collider. The first thing anyone though of was the worst possible outcome.

  • What song is playing in the intro?

  • Isn't the star thing out of spiderman 2???

  • holy crap i actually went to that star making place in livermore for a physics trip for my college.. i was in the building that the lasers are in and saw where the star will be made.. it was pretty cool there it was like a little town of smart people they even had a cycling group called THE CYCLATRONS.. they gave me a cool refrigerator magnet too..

  • yeah black hole sounds great they should do it in iraq just in case of black holes

  • The theory is it'll burn out super fast. I saw it, the star is the size of a needle ball. Um... I think it's a neat idea. But we have these 100% safe solar power plants we are building now. Can't we give those a try first in mass production?

  • Im Fuckin Scared!

  • Well they will try to simultaneously heat a single atom, which will then expand to a certain point and where the atom was will be a seperate universe or the star both possible out comes. in the universe case it will collapse on it self as it reaches its peak of expansion it will take place in such small amount of time it may seem lie nothing happpened

  • dude you just figured out how the world is gunna end in 2012

  • AARRRRRRRRRRRGGGHGGHHHH 2012!!!!!!! THE MAYANS WHERE RIGHT!!!!

  • idiots we have the sun why do we need a star fucking idiots

  • Anyways this could lead to far more then just an energy source, some of mans greatest discoverys were made by mistake. I see no reason to stand in the way of a posible amazing discovery that will either increace the quality of life forever, or kill us all instantly. We all have to go eventully it might as well be on the heels of a scientific break through.

  • Seriously, how long do all u ppl want to live in the stone age of burning fossil fuels? We have been doing that for decades! What they could possibly introduce is a clean religable renewable energy resource. Isn't that what everyone has been screaming about lately? Who knows maybe it will kill everyone in the prosess, but so far I don't see anyone else coming up with another better idea.

  • Building a mini star on Earth huh? AWESOME. It is a great first step towards generating stable nuclear fusion which would do wonders for all our energy problems.

  • Mmm i suppose they have good intentions (a new energy sorce, yay) but we all know what happens when man tries to play God..... Heidi Montag

  • That's fucked up.

why make a star on earth.

Darwin Award for the scientist(s) who came up with this idea

  • @littleReis Solving the worlds energy crisis might be a good reason.

  • I'm always amazed to see how humans have the awesome tendency to make their existence more and more miserable!!!! This mini sun project is FU*KING SCARY!! It's COMPLETELY INSANE!! We already have many problems like aids, global warming, and other diseases, why not put all those billion in researches to find cures for aids, and other diseases, why not use all that to improve our day to day life instead of wastin it in a project without direct interest for us and with more danger than advantages?

  • What a badass way to end human existence!

  • i want to build a bomb now

  • i think it so scary i just jizzed in my pants

  • I just noticed it's finished in 2012!!

    Ahhhhhhhh

    Jk

    Lol

I think that the lasers won't do nuttin. Stars are made from compressed material and the earths gravity would littarly make it die instantly on a small scale. Probably causing people to get cancer (chances are) but i don't think it will kill us all. And if in was 100 billion celcius it would ignite the air(I'm serious) would cause earths temp to rise and would make a vaporized spot in earth about the size of mississipi.

  • @popit123456789 i think you have no idea what the fuck you are talking about :/

  • I say do it if destroys the earth . It will happen so fast we wont even know what happened.

  • if they're already wasting colossal amounts of money on previously mentioned menacing insane untested machine, then you'd think they'd make it portable and test it on another planet or planet-like thing.. like the moon.. btw, this doesn't HAVE to be logical, I'm fifteen. Let me dream!!! lol

  • building a bomb huh what kind of bomb was it? was it a HOLY SHIT theres a bomb on the train kinda bomb or was it a ground bloom firework covered in duct tape? cause if its just a ground bloom then they over-reacted. but that mini star project isnt even slightly dangerous on the scale they are talking about on there website i would even go so far as to stand in the damn reaction chamber when they test it im so sure of that.... well maybe not lol

  • If humans are stupid enough to make a star, they are stupid enough to kill themselves off. Nothing more nothing less. No real scare tactic there.

  • how bout we focus on making the earth a better place the old fashioned way?? and not potentially destroying it in the process...

  • @Helloimsnapple The money saved from harnessing the energy the star would allow money to be spent on better things i.e. hunger and cancer and AIDs.

  • the "star on earth" is for Nuclear fusion reactions which would be about the coolest thing ever! It's the perfect solution to all of our energy problems! it runs on hydrogen which will never run out, has no pollution and would make energy unbelievably cheap! So cheap we would most likely pay one flat rate and use as much as we want (just like we pay for internet)!!!

  • i would fuck this guy

  • The big lasers are for making a fusion reaction. It's gonna be fucking sweet.

And if this was anything world-destroying, it obviously wouldn't be built.

  • I signed up for netflix =D

  • i think we shoudl create a cure for cancer not a cure for that pesky living

  • Shit I thought he said the kid was building a bong and it blew up

  • hey dude i was watching this new show called STEVEN HAWKING IN THE UNIVERSE and he's like the szmartest guy in the world and he said if anyone made a star on earth it would turn into a black hole and get insainly hot and kill everyone on earth

  • an extremely complicated lazer coming on 2012..... i bet theyll make it and blow up the world... =O

  • @kingplot it will blow up the world

  • @ciber101010101 which it will be 2012!!!

  • well this science/physic stuff interests me since i was in like 8th grade but now that the environment isnt doing too well... is it really a good idea to be experimenting with something at that level? i dont think mother earth would like a 1,000,000 degree pimple/cold sore on her face... =P

  • @cornman1220 rofl ya i love science and im in 8th grade riht now

  • @ciber101010101 hey man, if you like science, go for it and dont lose sight... or else u'd end up like me - being a finance major hahaha ^^"

  • well, fortunately a star that can go NOVA needs to be much larger than our Sun.

Since this mini star isn't, it won't explode.

  • It would be awesome if they had all the bases checked, such as when it dies and explodes/implodes/becomes a black hole, and with something that can take all that heat, but that is a lot of ifs.... still neat idea

    <
