Think about how the russian saw the situation. It had been 3 times in the last 150 years that an W. European Nation had stormed in to their country and tried to kill them all. They felt like they had to defend themselves. So in a response to what they saw as NATO aggression, Russia formed the Warsaw PAct. This was formed to offer some protection at the cost of many E.European nations' freedoms. In order to understand history better you need to understand each side's point of view.
