he talked alot about the old existentialists (beavouir and sartre) I wonder if he was arguing with Butler, and she said something from their perspective.
On the contrary, I think he's one of the few theorists today trying to cut out a good deal of (in this case, Lacanian) jargon in hope of making his conclusions more accessible.
I really like Zizek because he is not dry and shows me with great success the linkage between politics, sociology and psychology (I guess a couple more ology's too).
And come on... "don't f*ck with me". Releasing the intelectual tension with these kind of anecdotes is what makes him special.
Hhmm. What does his injunction to 'wait and learn' actually amount to beyond an habitual contrariness? Is it not the case that there are currently emergencies in which action is vital? I would rather say that those who always make reference to e.g. malnutrition in the third world, should consistently act on their words. I don't get the impression that too much action is the problem, but rather, too many empty words. And all the while one can read Hegel (i would prefer Nietzsche).
I think that he is saying that it is sometimes justified to decide not to act when presented with an emotional plea that doesn't have a functional context. Badly thought out, short-sighted actions can cause more harm than good. I think that many people have lost the capacity to internalize and integrate this information into a larger world view and the responsibility for more meaningful action. They want the ten-day diet version, to write their check and move on, not to change their lifestyle
I think he is saying that the contradictions that we will be facing in the near future are going to be much bigger than we realize and that theory is not ready for it. We need need an updated radical materialist body of theory and a radical emancipatory political project and this is precisely what Zizek's work aims at. But in this age of anti-materialism/anti-anti-capitalism there is a disturbing lack of critical insight into the machinations of capital and ideology.
I can't resist, as Zizek would say, here a vulgar interjection: Would not the ultimate radical, high-culture drinking game be to take a drink every time Zizek touches his nose?
But in all seriousness, another insightful lecture from both Zizek and EGS. And for those who find him inscrutable, Zizek is a highly idiosyncratic thinker, and I've found that if you just keep at his texts and lectures, his terminology and ideas become much clearer with time.
Or for slightly lighter drinkers every time he says 'precisely'.
I am more impressed than i remember being a year or two ago when i looked into Zizek, though i still find an occassionally appalling lack of rigour, i am persuaded that there may be -some- use for a Slavoj Zizek.
You could do loads. One swig every time he changes topic mid-sentence; one every time he wipes his hair away from his face; one for every time he uses the diet coke/laxative chocolate example. I might try it....sadly no one I know would want to play it.
wow i have very limited knowledge of politics and philosophy and only followed about half of what he was saying but my head is buzzing with ideas, i now have no chance of sleeping tonight....im going to watch it again, thanks! :)
How can this guy answer a complex issue such as Plaestinians and Israelis rights or situation? He has not answered anything but went around in a circle. If israelis feel this land belongs to them because of 2000 yrs ago, they should prove it by having a dna test.
Is this guy a cokehead? Yah... come on guys you are either listening to a cokehead or a man on a natural high. Anyways, the 1st world is rich for certain reasons. South America is just as mineral rich as North; the middle east has massive economic potential. It is not at all a coincidence all English speaking countries are rich. Culture makes us rich and we are trying to spread that culture.
Really english speaking nations are all rich? what about Jamaica? You have to understand that there are many different factors which affect a culture and more importantly build an economy. Also watch the rest of the lecture and the guy is not in any way a cokehead, but thanks for trying to dismiss his insightful remarks with an insult.
You are too quick to judge. Zizek suffers from Tourette's syndrome. Far from being a cokehead he is one of our greatest intellectuals. One cannot appreciate what he says unless one is well versed in psychoanalysis since that is what informs his arguments. You could learn a great deal from his writings but it is not easy reading for the layman. His easiest text is titled Looking Awry. It explains psychoanalytic concepts using examples from pop culture, and it is fun to read.
Get over yourself! One cannot appreciate what he says unless one is well versed in psychoanalysis? Really?!"You could learn a great deal from his writings but it is not easy reading for they layman." What an ego! And why do you assume that asking whether or not someone is on coke is a judgment statement? I enjoyed his lecture and appreciated what he had to say despite the fact that I am not well versed in psychoanalysis and,to someone who doesn't know any better,it appears as though he is on coke
the german nationalism was not based on color. it's race. a real race. a blood, an eye, a mind, a back-up, everything that u need. I guess that's the race that u should've talked about. amerikans tries to rule world by killing, seducing, with no history... ohh jeah a history that was found with a spanish that named by Cristof Colomb.
or we can imagine days like usa did the same to iraq at the war with iran around 80's. who knows? and I'm asking u slavoj; u're an european and have a history that written with reality.
then; countries like Turkiye started to find out that the american guns ( m-16 ) were found in terrorist groups at northern iraq. :D like taliban!!! this was how usa'd feeding taliban against russia. then usa were there to erase them all
I mean, I would like to make remember all americans; PUSHed (bush ) called the world that now on United States Of America is in war against any kind of terrorism on all over the world.
I guess the conflict, between palestinia and israeli jews, is not like arabs against jews or jews against arabs. The disagreement is the same beliefs. They are killing eachother for the same God. but on the other hand, what about usa? what's the matter with them? I mean there is lots of terrorist groups against Turkiye, and the peace angel of God is not taking any action.
thank you for your comment. be assured that you will see new lectures soon. we are uploading new videos every week. thank you. we appreciate your interest.
i think one should gather the courage to answer, 'yes!'. there are situations where the only truly practical thing to do is to resist the temptation to engage immediately; it is to wait and see by means of patient critical analysis."
"when in a critical analysis of the present global constellation, one offers no clear solution, no practical advice on what to do, when one paints no light at the end of the tunnel (well aware that this light might belong to a train crashing towards us), one is usually reproached, 'so what should we do? nothing? just sit and wait?'...
Fascinating.

1.when he point to the sarte -the dilema of dutty."while drawing in
secluded place and xxxxxx.Believa me or not but what i am hearing is "stalin".
2.chock circle and step mother.can't understand what is the point.

Absolutely. Try reading Lacan and tell me that Zizek is wordy... as far as academics go, Zizek is quite clear.

If you really think that's what this discourse was about then you should watch this video again, particularly 7/8 and 6/8.
I think he speaks to this directly in stating that it is futile to discern, or propagate, "who was here first," type of thinking.
