...we are the worse economy in Europe( from non slavic countries standpoint). Greece is to blame for its own economy because it doesn't exploit its strengths. Why is there so much unemployment? ill tell you why because most Greeks don't want to hire people outside their family. Most businesses are family run, and they don't want to pay out of their own pockets.And they all want to be in the public service. Don't blame the EU for the stupid mentality of the Greeks. We have so much tourist..

Thanks for that video. I can imagine what a sad night that must have been. I know Olympic brought many Greeks together from the African Countries, not only South Africa but also Zimbabwe, Botswana, Malawi, Zambia, Congo, Angola, Namibia & Mozambique. The Greeks need a direct service from Southern Africa. It is sad.

What did you all expect though? I kaki mira pire tin Olimpiaki apo ta heria tou Idriti tis ton Aristoteli Onassi kai tin edosa sta xeria tou kratous. Aristotle Onassis started Olympic on a good track. When he sold it to the Greek Government the worse was in sight. Let's face it is a disgrace for such a world renowned brand name to not fly to a major air hub like North America, heck even Asia. Decades and Decades of mismanagement, favoritism, and plain old waste, left the airline battered...

Please note that Olympic had its problems when Onassis had her this is why the Greek government took over after OA had halted operations for some time back then, infact the Greek government and offcourse the people of Greece (tax payers) kept this airline alive for so many years. The reason why it ended up where it did is because of the European Union.

Can you please give some examples as to why the EU is to blame? Its not the EU'S fault if it keeps giving grants to the Greek government and it ends up being used for the wrong reasons like building mansions on illegal land, and Members of parliament with all the riches. Instead of the money going to Olympic where it was intended it went into the hands of the members of parliament of PASOK-ND and shareholders, and CEO'S of Olympic. Don't blame the EU for the pathetic country Greece has become.

most national airlines (government run) are non profitable or with very little profit and therefor the government has to help the airline, in the case of the EU they imposed huge fines to the greek government for bailing the airline out and this is the reason why the EU is to blame, the are also to blame for the bad economy in greece too! when the drachma was around everyone was well off, now everyone is with out a job!

Well the irony of the whole thing is it was the Greek government who pushed Greece into the EU. Simitis was the one who replaced the drachma with the Euro.How is the EU to blame for the bad economy in Greece? They have given millions in grants and the money has gone into the pockets of the rich for their own personal growth. Portugal and Spain are also in the EU and have much better economies than we do, and the funny thing is they entered 5 years later in 1986.Discounting Eastern Europe....

Do you really believe what you are saying!? Olympic ended up like that because it was used in any way as a vehicle of favors. For example do you know that Olympic could operate perfectly with 2500 employees? And it had something like 8000..Definitely not EU fault.

Born in Rhodesia, I took OA twice to come to ATH on vacation.

I still remember 35 years ago when we would give a standing ovation in Jan-Smuts when the OA Boeing 707 landed , much to the surprise of the other transit passengers.

You have to be Greek to understand this, a Greek from the diaspora!

Spent 23 years working for KLM in Greece and now proudly work for the new OA where we WILL make it a success & someday be able to board the flight back to a scheduled JNB . We will be back Joberg !

15million visitors still this airline lost money since 1975 and all but vanished orfm the advertisment......are you sure they will survive the likes of Ryanair or easyjet?
