It is well documented that the original Cavern club no longer exists. The part that remained under the shoddy parking lot was explored in 1983, and it was found to be unstable with collapsing ceilings and very poor foundations. It was then completely demolished and the one across the street was built with approximately 15,000 of the original bricks. Just do a bit of research and you will see. It is a great loss.
So - it IS the same site, and the front room of the new club occupies a good bit of the space of the original .... so don't feel cheated. You are standing in a good portion of the space as it was (just facing the other way).
The Cavern of today was dug out and rebuilt and occupies 50-75% of the original site. It could not all be dug out due to foundations etc - but it is the same site (not across the street). The original room is now rotated and runs parallel to matthew street - whereas originally the room was 90 degrees to the street. It also is further down under the ground - again due to the foundation restrictions on the excavation.
i don't know if it was a slightly posh lilt the Beatles had but I hardly ever hear any Liverpudlians speak like they did (apart from Neil Aspinall) even this guy has that kind of bite in the accent you never heard them have, I know John put it on a bit but George(speke)Ringo (the Dingle) anyone out there break it down for me?
Crap. This is NOT The Cavern and is a totally different building. The real Cavern where The Beatles DID play is LONG LONG gone. It is buried under rubble further down the street. This joint is a plagiarising capitalist ran skanky alehouse. BOLLOCKS !
You tell something we ALL aready know. So, stop to take us for fools... And if you really heard what Neil said, you would have avoided this uninteresting and stupid comment...
@mellowlou The only bollocks is coming from you pal, it is the exact site of the origional, slightly deeper, granted, a cavern under the cavern full of water was discovere and this is what now is the cavern. it is in the exact same place, deeper and turned through 90 degrees. Stop trying to make bad, something a lot of people hold close to their hearts you uninformed "arsehole"
@mellowlou yes you are right. I visited the place in 1982 and there was only the front of the club , the rest of it had been demolished if I remember well it was for a car parking
Nobody tells it like Neil tells it! He's right, y'know...
