It wasnt actually written for Sinead. Originally it was recorded under the group "the family" which was created to get more of princes music into the public. It is rumored prince actually wrote it about vocalist Susannah Melvoin. Sinead covered it 4 years later in 1989.
Correction.... not '86 but '85. Prince wrote and composed the jam but St. Paul made it his ... better vocals than the song's composer and far superior to that Sinead O'Connor version ... St. Paul's vocals and Claire Fischer's orchestration made the song
