@iDJMIXTRESS tubing is the whole experience of floating down the river on the doughnut thing, and stopping off at the bars that line the river. most bars offer free whiskey shots, all of them offer cheap buckets and the amount of pressure there is to get wasted is absolutely ridiculous. the people that work there pour whiskey down your throat as you walk into the bar. along the way there are also swings and 10m platforms to jump off, and the river is only 1m deep in some parts.....

@hamburglar0906 (continued) furthermore, at some point the river actually forks, and if you don't take the right fork you end up in the middle of nowhere rather than vang vieng. but basically, people drown because they aren't wearing life jackets, they think they're invincible, they try swimming and tire out or they're just too drunk or high on drugs (which you can get from the bars as well)

I was there 6 weeks ago, and had the time of my life. i drank a lot, jumped off ridiculously high platforms and didn't think much of it. but two aussies have died this summer tubing, including a family friend of mine who was only 19.

please please be careful. don't get wasted on the river; it's not worth the risk. don't go by yourself, don't get split up from your friends, and make you designate someone to stay sober. tubing is mad fun, but these tragic deaths are unnecessary.

I love Laos, was there in 2006 during Son Kran (sorry if I spelled it wrong) had an amazing time, especially in Vang Vieng . And you're right it is much more of a tourist party place than anything else, there are no museums or any cultural places of interest and there were more foreigners than natives when I was there.

Look, there's posters from the Lao Tourism board ( a gov agency) all over Laos that gives advice for tourists on how to behave appropriately, and one of the actions NOT to do on these posters is to partake in nudism.
