@gethsoftware Well, sort of ... it's not exactly what we would call a pipe organ. What they had was a water-powered wind instrument (the hydraulis), a fairly modest thing, not what you'd call epic (compared to a modern pipe organ).
When the deep pedal notes come in I want them to show up with the right degree of vertical depth from the top; I know you would need a screen that was six foot deep to do this properly. Also, having synæsthesia, I would be happier if the colours coincided with the notes, but there is some disagreement even amongst synæsthetes as to which colour represents which note.
Generally deeper shades are attributed to deeper notes, so just a really dark colour would help.

I'm a really negative person, but for some reason when I hear amazing pieces like this I feel that the world can't be that bad since it has such beautiful things as this, even if this particular one is sinister-sounding. After all, it'd be boring if all music was light-hearted. Ok I'm going to stop rambling now.
@ZOMGHALP This is Bach. It still contains many of the themes that Bach would have used. It was intended for solo violin, but Bach would practice it on the organ, which then turned into him testing the capabilities of the organ. Think of it as a virtuosic piece for organ. AND if they were ever able to come up with a ridiculous notion that Bach did not compose this piece, nobody will care. Toccata and Fugue in D minor is associated with Bach's name and will never die.
It was common in those days for aspiring composers who were unknown or simply studying with a teacher to write their name on it in hopes that it would stick around.
As there is no autographed manuscript it seems quite possible that this piece is not written by him. Just because it is popular and well known does not necessarily make it his. Listen to the counterpoint... it just doesn't have that magical bach sound to it
@ZOMGHALP "sounds like nothing bach would write." Bach wrote everything, so why wouldn't it be something that he would write? And Bach was never really an aspiring composer. He was at the elite level from the get go. By his late teens, he had become known as a master organist having mastered the organ. And this piece is popular, with the masses believing he composed it. None of those will ever believe otherwise.
@freshhh1994 How likely is it that this iconic piece of music was composed by an unknown when it was long ago attributed to Bach? Pretty slim if not infinitesimal. The music remains the same for sure, and I'm sure each person goes on what they seek to believe. The argument will soldier on until definitive proof is found either way. That's not likely to happen though, so for now Bach is the composer.
@jrssjdca A lot of music that was originally attributed to Bach has since been (pretty definitively --- no debate any more) attributed to others. If I had to guess the future, it would be this: statistical methods, like those which have been applied to literature to determine authorship, will be developed for music to derive a "composer's fingerprint" which can be compared among pieces --- and that this will yield a relatively low statistical likelihood that this is by Bach.
@smalin I have seen about 5 maybe 10 pieces on the internet that were previously thought to be by Bach, but are no longer. However, those aren't of the same magnitude as the Brandenburgs, The Goldbergs, The Italian Concertos, the WTC, which are known to be by Bach. I'd imagine that the History Channel may shoot something through a computer with mathematical analysis to throw out a new theory that it may not be Bach, but would they stir a hornet's nest in doing so? Or just let sleeping dogs lie?
@jrssjdca Until there's an autograph score by an unknown organist or the like that surfaces, then theory will always be theory. The Ringk copy is the only one known in existence.
@jrssjdca surely he didn't write everything! He had a limited output, as does every composer. Don't believe everything you hear.
Listen with your heart and intuition. Most people can believe what they want but to me, it sounds like a student wrote this and put his name on it. And that's my opinion.. I know you think I'm wrong, you've already told me so. It just doesn't sound legit to me.
@ZOMGHALP My classical guitar teacher told me way back when that "Bach wrote everything" which meant that anything you hear has his influence on it. I have read that there are 1000 known pieces that have survived, and probably 1000 that haven't.
You have your opinion and I have mine, and neither is right or wrong because there's no evidence. I grew up hearing that this was by Bach, and that's what's stuck. Since it's an iconic piece, it'll probably remain as is with Bach being the composer.
New theory suggests bach did not write this piece. Due to lack of an original manuscript and that many of bach's organ pieces are nothing like this. But these scholars who say this are thinking too hard. Does a composer have only one style? No. Does Moonlight Sonata sound like Fur Elise. No. Many composers use different styles in music and each piece may sound a little bit the same because being written in the same musical era. But I believe Bach did write this. Whos with me?
@thetripledoubleZ I'm with you. For me, Bach wrote this by process of elimination and lack of evidence that he didn't write it. Mozart didn't write this, Beethoven didn't. Johann Peter Kellner (who another YTer theorized may have written it) assuredly didn't write it. I don't think he wrote anything of relevancy and there are no recordings from him that I could find on Amazon. So would you believe an obscure organist wrote this world famous masterpiece, or the greatest composer who ever lived?
@WiseIsWise Well, do we know what publicity was in those days? Like it is now? Absolutely not. No one was interested in Bach until Mendelssohn rediscovered him. Now perhaps during Mendelssohn's time this was attributed to Bach, but I've never read anything how the attribution occurred. The only info I've been able to find is that Bach wrote this piece, and for 30 years there's been a dispute.
@thetripledoubleZ I am with you. The complexity of the fugue layers is a staple to Bach. His Art of Fugue proves this. Bach's fugue style in very distinguishable--and Toccata and Fugue in D minor carries out the fugue that he is famous for.
If the human being has been able to create the Toccata and Fugue in D minor it is clear that to create an imaginary friend called God is piece of cake.
I've always known this song as "that creepy, dracula music." Then I was told the actual name a loong time after i first heard it(which is about 5 years or so) when i needed it for a music project.
This is a gas and a half - at least as much, perhaps more so than the early movies in the '50s set to jazz scores. It really clarified the complexity of the voice leadings in 18th C harmony.
"Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde"(1931) with Fredric March.Jekyll plays this on an organ,at the film's beginning. An amazing piece of music complementing a superior horror classic.
@smalin this is a great! congratz! it would be even better (in my opinon) to have the grid of steps in the background(i guess this is from a midi sequencer or daw) and the notes. or the color code in the descritpion to show the full complexity of it.
@lilisakura1 Just found the sheet music earlier today, and while it sounds hard and impressive when it's being played, if you just get the subject and answer melody and rhythms right, you're fine! Pedal is minimal, and where it is, it's very easy, apart from where the theme is brought in twice (semiquavers), and even then, your right foot stays on one key, and your left foot stays deep in the bass clef. Don't panic, I recommend getting the sheet music :D
OMG!! Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting something so positive and uplifting on you tube! Everytime I hear this piece, I picture Leonardo Dicaprio in the flight scene in "Aviator." God bless you for making this!
I think it's great that these videos are up (and that this many people still love classical) AND that you still answer your comments even tho the video was posted seven years ago. Keep up the great work!
its so wonderful to see so many people enjoy classical music since we stepped into the age of hiphop and techno even though i enjoy techno alot i still love classical
@smalin Can I make a request of The Finale (fourth movement) of Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings? It's one of my favorite pieces, and the melody/countermelody combo would look great on the bar-graph score.
@Kuckooracha Gee, I don't know how to answer that. I mean, it's like explaining sex to somebody who's never experienced it. It's like listening to it, except much more involving, demanding, and satisfying ... plus something else beyond what it's like just to listen.
@smalin I often turn the sound up while listening to this, and feel vibes going through my body for each note that is played. I just feel so... powerful and... immense? I can only imagine with jealousy what is it like to play this.
@Kuckooracha Then you should stay tuned for (what I hope will be) my next video: Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor. Every time I work on the piece, my delusions of grandeur escalate. :-)
@smalin OMG! I've been waiting for you to make a video of that for ages! You just made my day! One of the best pieces of music ever written, in my humble opinion.
@smalin Will definitely do! I couldn't find your to-do list again, so I'll ask here: do you plan on working on Duruflé's works, maybe his requiem, or is it too late a period for you? My partner in life is his great-great-niece, I'd love to show her the work of her ancester through your videos!
@Kuckooracha I have played this piece on the piano and it was an amazing piece to play. Never did much with an organ so didn't get to play it on its true instrument.
@MDthornton83 Not really. Even in the unlikely event that you accept Bach's authorship, it's not a serious piece of music. And for a piece that starts off with undeniable brio it simply peters out into a tuneless dirge for the last 3-4 minutes.
In my honest opinion, this music was composed in its original format by Bach for the use of solo string instrument, most likely a 5-string cello. Later on he transcribed it for use at the organ.
So while its authenticity as a pure organ work is held in dispute, that it is of Bach's pen few can doubt when in their right mind.
He often transcribed string pieces for organ, i.e. Vivaldi concertos. No controversy there.
In sum: it is Bach's, but for solo string instrument.
@TheGoodWinston So the question I have to ask you is - what documentary evidence ties this piece to Bach and what's the earliest record of attribution? Otherwise your opinion seems to be nothing more than wishful thinking.
@smalin Just a small comment here but...I challenge you to do this with Toccata in F Charles Marie Widor. I have the upmost respect for your work (vids) :P
Oooooh! I love this song A LOT!! > < Peaceful and creepy at the same time. :) The part starting at 4:40 looks like a heart monitor screen, and the part at 7:51 looks like carrots! LOL
@smalin Well I guess I would cover them up if it was rap because i cant stand it.I guess dubstep is okay too but if i listen too much too it then it gets really annoying.Anyway the real music is classical but I like metal and rock too.
I listen to dubstep, hardcore techno, all kinds of metal + some kinds of punk + a lot of hard rock. I listen only to a very few rap/pop songs. Still i absolutely adore classical music, it relaxes me, inspires me and i just love it. I don;t see how listening to any other genre affects listening to classical music.
If you want to listen to dance electronic music with clear influences of classical, look for the artist of labels such as Natura Sonoris, with arists like Henry Saiz, Damabiah, Cora Novoa... That is the real deal of electronic dance
Too bad people nowadays dont apreciatte music like this.I have a classmate and whenever our music teacher puts a cd so we can listen to Mozart or Bach or Vivaldi he covers up his ears and makes me want to punch him because he only listens to rap and dubstep.
Seeing this music as a visual representation makes one realise again what a genius Bach and the old masters had to have been to be able to comprehend, imagine and compose this music and write it for different instruments to be played together at the same time without a single octave out of place.
Today's mainstream artists can't even sing in tune or along with a melody. It's all about IMAGE and sales without talent...America!
'The evidence of rule-breaking includes doubling at the octave and the curious minor cadence that ends the Toccata, both not heard elsewhere in Bach's organ output (usually even a work in a minor key concludes with a major chord). The Toccata also brims with harmony and counterpoint bordering on simplistic for the masterful composer.'
This is what's so amusing. Classical musical naifs lauding Bach's genius blissfully unaware that he wouldn't have been caught dead composing anything this crass
What do the colors mean? Great music! Great video!

I think it's great that these videos are up (and that this many people still love classical) AND that you still answer your comments even tho the video was posted seven years ago. Keep up the great work!

@smalin Can I make a request of The Finale (fourth movement) of Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings? It's one of my favorite pieces, and the melody/countermelody combo would look great on the bar-graph score.
nstegmull 3 weeks ago
@nstegmull Sorry, I'm not taking any more requests; my to-do list is already too intimidating.

@thefreeflowification Since I'm a composer (and have written contrapuntal music), I can imagine it ...

What does it feel like to play this? It sounds so... sublime!
Kuckooracha 3 weeks ago
@Kuckooracha Gee, I don't know how to answer that. I mean, it's like explaining sex to somebody who's never experienced it. It's like listening to it, except much more involving, demanding, and satisfying ... plus something else beyond what it's like just to listen.

@smalin
Excellent description!!!!!!! You really know music if you can describe it like that :) Great job this is my favorite version now
Catartist154321 3 weeks ago
@smalin I often turn the sound up while listening to this, and feel vibes going through my body for each note that is played. I just feel so... powerful and... immense? I can only imagine with jealousy what is it like to play this.
Kuckooracha 3 weeks ago
@Kuckooracha Then you should stay tuned for (what I hope will be) my next video: Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor. Every time I work on the piece, my delusions of grandeur escalate. :-)
smalin 3 weeks ago
@smalin OMG! I've been waiting for you to make a video of that for ages! You just made my day! One of the best pieces of music ever written, in my humble opinion.
muulka 3 weeks ago
@smalin Will definitely do! I couldn't find your to-do list again, so I'll ask here: do you plan on working on Duruflé's works, maybe his requiem, or is it too late a period for you? My partner in life is his great-great-niece, I'd love to show her the work of her ancester through your videos!
Kuckooracha 3 weeks ago
@Kuckooracha No plans for Duruflé.

@Kuckooracha I have played this piece on the piano and it was an amazing piece to play. Never did much with an organ so didn't get to play it on its true instrument.
danoz430254 3 weeks ago
@Kuckooracha Some who have posted on these videos state that it's emotional, sucks the performer into it, and results in a high.

Great performance of one of the most famous pieces of J.S. Bach's work.
How well it sounds although a lot of mathematical logic is in it (as you can image by following the bar graph)!

A timeless classic in the history of music.
MDthornton83 3 weeks ago
@MDthornton83 Not really. Even in the unlikely event that you accept Bach's authorship, it's not a serious piece of music. And for a piece that starts off with undeniable brio it simply peters out into a tuneless dirge for the last 3-4 minutes.
JasonRadley 3 weeks ago
@JasonRadley I see.
MDthornton83 3 weeks ago
Just my personal opinion.
Everyone seems to rush the single line after the large Bb chord near the end. It needs to be enjoyed more, slightly slower.
But yes, personal taste.
RequiemAeterman 3 weeks ago
In my honest opinion, this music was composed in its original format by Bach for the use of solo string instrument, most likely a 5-string cello. Later on he transcribed it for use at the organ.
So while its authenticity as a pure organ work is held in dispute, that it is of Bach's pen few can doubt when in their right mind.
He often transcribed string pieces for organ, i.e. Vivaldi concertos. No controversy there.
In sum: it is Bach's, but for solo string instrument.
TheGoodWinston 3 weeks ago
@TheGoodWinston So the question I have to ask you is - what documentary evidence ties this piece to Bach and what's the earliest record of attribution? Otherwise your opinion seems to be nothing more than wishful thinking.

@smalin Well I guess I would cover them up if it was rap because i cant stand it.I guess dubstep is okay too but if i listen too much too it then it gets really annoying.Anyway the real music is classical but I like metal and rock too.
jiaber1999 4 weeks ago
@smalin

8468786 1 month ago
'The evidence of rule-breaking includes doubling at the octave and the curious minor cadence that ends the Toccata, both not heard elsewhere in Bach's organ output (usually even a work in a minor key concludes with a major chord). The Toccata also brims with harmony and counterpoint bordering on simplistic for the masterful composer.'
This is what's so amusing. Classical musical naifs lauding Bach's genius blissfully unaware that he wouldn't have been caught dead composing anything this crass
