Rap emphasizes catchy melodies in its choruses(A major part of its Pop influence), and generally has subject matter pertaining to "Bitches and Money" or some other superficial bullshit. Hip-Hop is much smoother and emphasizes its lyrics, flow, and accompaniment. Like I said, look up Nujabes to hear good (mostly lyric-less) hip-hop.

Candy is made to be addictive, to make you want more of it, but deserts are made to leave you satisfied, they're made for you to actually enjoy. Rap is like candy, to be catchy and to appeal to as many people as possible, Hip-Hop is for people more conscientious of their tastes and is generally made to make you think about what they are saying.
