  • how did the first creature start flying ? or was bored of walking and just jumped in the air and voila ! pfffahahah actualy people believe this crazy nonsense

  • @tnafguy I study birds in the wild, so I'm pretty I know what I'm talking about. Sea-facing cliffs create strong updrafts that allow birds that would otherwise be too heavy to fly to stay airborne. I don't know a lot about pterosaurs, but there's no reason that the same principle wouldn't apply.

  • @tnafguy Most pterosaur species lived in coastal regions. Throwing yourself off a tall cliff is a good way to fly. It gives you momentum to unfurl your wings and start flapping, and if you fail, water is much softer than land. That's why many large birds today live near water (albatrosses, pelicans, herons).

  • It sure is nice to see a djarum76 video free of the damn votebots.

  • Listen to the PHd at 2,22 "Suddenly something happened things started

flying". And then again " mutations and natural selection produced wings.

Any aeronuatical engineer understands mastering the secrets of flight

is not a result of mindless accidental mutations.

  • HOW CAN HUMANS EVOLVE WINGS?

if a roach can do it why can we? whats stopping us from flying?

  • @RespectMyHate What's stopping us from flying? I'd hazard to guess the fear of falling to you're death would be a major hindrance.

  • @MrDBarch That fear didn't seem to hinder the first proto flyers, the ones who started the flight trend.

  • @RespectMyHate you didn't ask about them (proto flyers), you clearly asked what's stopping humans from flying; what's stopping us. Hence my reply.

  • @MrDBarch So fear of falling to our deaths is your answer. You know nothing about biology.

  • @RespectMyHate human evolution has been severely slowed.I dont think its going to speed up anytime soon either.in order to get it started again, wed have to stop taking care of people born with defects,or people with certain diseases.wed have to get rid of most of civilization and most of the advancements weve made in science.i would personally hate to see any of that happen.I wouldnt be surprised if the human race doesnt stay the same for a long time,or more likely, start going backwards.

  • @aarontheman9196 We will use technology to evolve.

  • Cool video. It's easy to understand why something like that won't survive long.

  • wtf? its not because of difficulty finding food its because the gravity was different when the dinosaurs were around....

  • Omfg... "Mutations and natural selection" is all this vid has to say about the origin of wings? Fucking history channel doing more harm than good... That is creationist fodder if I ever saw it

  • This is just one crazy fairytale. "insect flight evolved suddenly." Hello??? How? Proof please!

    "Suddenly something happens!!!!"

"Mutations and natural selection produced the first species with wings capable of lifting them into the air. This random evolutionary accident ...."

    Who believes this garbage?

So this 'random evolutionary accident' produced flight 4 times over?

    ONCE UPON A TIME ....

  • @greatgulffixed Yeah, I agree with you. I'm an evolutionist atheist and all that, and it's totally not explained. We can only hope that they go into more detail in the next thirty minutes of the segment.

  • The only reason I am watching this CRAP is because of a character in my book trying to explain evolution of wings. They can support NONE of this fictitious crap about MILLIONS of years ago. I hear the words "unknown" "accident" "random" and other keys words too much to believe in this stuff.

  • For all you deniers of reality:

    watch?v=6cOSF2MGVzc

Let me guess, god just made them like that right?

    -_-

  • I think it's actually kind of a pity huge flying animals like Quetzalcoatlus, or even Argentinavis or such. I think it's a pity that there's nothing like that around anymore.

I know alot of people might be more happy about it because of the whole 'death from the skies' thing. But I wondered what it'd look like to see such a massive creature fly. You know, seeing it with your own eyes.

  • @Shavarnarak That would be awesome!

  • "This random evolutionary accident" also created sonar, pumps, computer brains, advanced storage systems. sonar jamming systems (tiger moth), evolution isn't just a blind watch maker, its the inventor of just about all of our inventions today.

  • So how did they get the wings?

  • very cool, i love evolution!

  • Great! I love this show.

  • random... accident?? Yeah, what else could it possibly have been?

  • Fascinating stuff! On to part 2!

  • we have perigrin falcons here in providence rhode island, they live in the very top of our tallest building downtown!!

someone actually posted a vid of them in that building i think its the fleet bank building not sure, but they fly/dive sooooo fast!!!

ive forgotten the name of the vid but its floatin around youtube

  • If anyone is interested in the evolution of insect wings, here's the link (you'll have to put it together though). No "ww" in the url.

    Here: tinyurl dotcom/gills-to-wings

  • Very interesting. Peregrine falcon @ 200mph...impressive.

Only thing is contradiction on largest flying animals. He said the pterosaur, the largest flying animal ever (approx. 440 lbs )is 4x as big as any flying animal today but the great bustard is about 45 lbs.

Wouldn't that make it more like 10x bigger?

  • thank you!

  • The narrator just used the word "accident" to describe the development of wings :P

  • may be they never flew, may be that had wings but they never got airborn, just an hypothesis!

  • The footage, expert commentary and editing are great. But it seems like a show for small children because of the narration explaining simple concepts like they are introducing mysterious and complex things. The music sounds like stock reality-tv stuff. This would be great to show in primary schools.

  • It's a programme meant for an American audience.

    Enough said.

  • @jazzx251 LOL

  • My 6-year old son just watched this with me and was fascinated. will watch the rest with him too. thanks for posting this, and the evolution of whales series too. great stuff.

  • Do the wings of the flying fish not count real wings too so tht fish wld be another category?

  • That's a very good point. Although this doc is looking to powered flight not gliding. If you were to expand the subject to gliding you would have to include fish, snakes, frogs, flying squirrels, sugar gliders, colugos etc. Great subject for another video.

  • Comment removed

  • thnx. can the flying fish flap their wings too unlike the other gliding creatures u mentioned? And also isnt the structure of a flying fish's wings more similar to tht of those creatures with powered flight like birds as compared to the gliders?

  • but it still cant fly, so maybe its going to evolve into a flier, but it isnt there yet no matter how flexible its wings are

  • Teasing me :(

Is there another video on that subject to post, or just wishful thinking?

  • I will keep an eye out for one on the evolutions of "gliders"

  • Thank you for posting this. I wanted to catch them on TV, but I never found the time.

  • when they say suddenly btw they dont mean in our time frame but millions of years shorter than most other evoloutions.

In comparison with the world's age its suddenly

  • Absolutely fascinating. Please upload the rest!

  • 02:34 "...insect flight evolved SUDDENLY ..."

That sounds strange. There must have been "humble beginnings".

  • suddenly as in a course of a few million years. We went from monkeys to humans in a few million years.

  • I think the 'suddenly' remark is in comparison to the speed at which other species that conquered flight.

Although I agree, it could be misleading to the uninformed.

  • Yes, I think suddenly probably means tens of thousands of years at the very least.

Cretins probably think it means during lunch time.

  • Yes indeed. Perhaps scientists haven't figured it out yet, but i'm sure they must at least have some ideas.

I know nothing on the matter, but if i had to guess (if they pointed a gun at my head) i'd say that wings started as feet that grew long and light in order to soften a fall (in heavy insects). If that happened (i'm not sure that it should) you'd get wings pretty quickly (in evolutionary time).

    I think...

  • "I think", as Darwin wrote next to his drawing of the Tree of Life? ;-)

  • Yeah, but he was smarter. I got it wrong. The insect wings evolved from gills.

    Here: tinyurl dotcom/gills-to-wings

  • Thank you for the link! I just finished the article, it is fascinating.

  • Yes it is!! I'm glad you liked it too. =D

  • Hundreds of millions of years ago I believe I heard there was more atmospheric oxygen, so Pterosaurs would get more energy for flight. This is also why all animals back at that time were bigger.

  • I don't really dig this documentary, the way they speak to the audience is like it's they are are talking to retards. it's like hey stupid people look at this big pterosaur, it was big at 3 cars, look, here is 3 cars to remind you how big that is cos you're so stupid you might have forgot.

  • dude... u have to think that "creationists" will watch this!!

  • or because actually seeing 3 cars end to end brings the realization of "holy crap that's a big animal" home better than just saying it.

Also this was aired on the history channel, and it is suited for a general audience. They aren't expecting an audience of scientists. It's all about the development process. As a web designer this concept is easy to grasp. When making a product or a web page you must consider the people who are using it.

  • I disagree, this programme is accessible to anyone, incuding children. And the comparison to cars is good for conveying the scale of the beast!

You may be familiar with the content , but many are not as scientifically literate as others.

  • LOOOOOVE the evolve series!!

    thanks for the upload!

  • "..This random evolutionary accident can now be seen..." ...Wait.. What? I hate science garbled for popular consumption....

  • And its fucking wrong too. When they say things like "accident" it gives creationists ammo.

  • @Wezzipooh at least their telling the truth.

  • That line really bugged me too. Nothing happens by "accident" in the natural world - that's the very basis of science. That actions have a cause.

  • It must had a really big source of food. That monster must have consumed a truckload of energy to sustain. But then, no competition in their niche does help.

I find the chest area really small, that behemoth would need tremendous amount of oxygen to function.

Being a cold blooded animal it does save heaps of energy.

I hope more questions are answered in the following parts...

  • Alpha1Bravo1Charlie1 - 3 words : Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

  • lima oscar lima

  • Romeo Oscar Foxtrot Lima!

  • hope this series mentions pterosaurs

  • wow the history channel has actually done something that can be considered history kind of. i mainly here a bunch of bull shit about nostradomus or w/e and bible bullshit that isn't even known to actually have occured or not.

  • O.o what the hell does the big bang have to do with evolution stay on topic or don't talk >.>

  • then how about you make a theory that has more evidence then any other theory (evolution) and has facts to back it up

  • that's like saying gravityists made some stupid bs theory because they don't want to fly. you're an idiot.

  • I was trolling, some dude said nobody had tried to disprove evolution yet, I had to ruin the winning streak

  • I caught the sarcasm.

    5/10 for troll job.

  • Woot! Five comments and no one trying to "disprove evolution" yet.

  • Are these segments pulled from a TV show...? I'd be interested in picking up a copy on DVD if it were available... :-)

  • No, Djarm just works for the History Channel that's why there is the watermark in the corner.

  • Right - didn't notice the watermark. :-O

    Maybe I can catch a re-run sometime...

  • Its part of a series called "Evolve" 11 parts or so. they are a good watch

  • Cool vid, bro, thanks for uploading.

  • Interesting stuff.
