Gays should not be serving openly in the military, the military knows better how to maintain its order than you. Meaning, although DADT forces gays to lie, at least gays are able to at least serve in the military. The US military are members of the NATO military alliance of 28 western nations. ALL those nations - except for Turkey, Greece and the USA - have total equality in the military and allow people to be who they are.

Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain & the UK have no problem with gay & lesbian soldiers.

Civil unions are indeed equal to marriage statewide. whether or not each state that offers them makes sure they are equal is a whole other matter .The benefits your mainly talking about are based on federal law. even with gay marriage, you would not get those benefits because of DOMA. so its a redherring and has been ever sense the No On 8 Campaign brought it up

Besides, We can always make sure that civil unions have all the same rights down the future without having to redefining marriage

Take that back it was an executive order signed by President Truman in 1948 that ended segregation in the Army. Took awhile before it fully set in though. That's all President Obama would have to do to end "Don't ask don't tell" though.

As I understand the "don't ask don't tell policy". It doesn't even have to be put to a vote to be rid of. He can just sign a document and it would be no more. Just like segregation in the Army was done away with by President Truman in the 50's.

That is incorrect. It would be an amendment to national policy, which would require it to pass through both the Senate and the House of Representatives in the Congress as a bill.
