The oil companies saw this and realized that was how they could get the gas price increases they had long wanted without generating mass protests--create a shortage.
They only created shortages where people were politically active--California and the west coast, northeast US. For people in the south, the only shortage was on the news.
People were so glad to get gas, they accepted paying more than double for it.
The increased gas prices made alternative energies more economically feasible and within a few years there were good developments in this direction.
The oil companies and OPEC then increased production just enough to keep the price low enough to make the developing alternative energy industries unprofitable.
This all happened in the 1970's. Imagine where alternative energy would be today if OPEC and the oil companies hadn't killed it?

Thats why its so frustrating, since our Congress rarely does whats necessary. But for protests that large you need lots of people... and the majority of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, and can't simply trot off to DC to protest for 3-5 days. Heck, most people have trouble getting a single day off without threats or mistreatment.

Actually, its more because protests don't work well in this generation. There are protests for everything, and nobody pays attention. What we need is for Congress to do what they got voted in to do, and the Republicans still withholding votes for fear of Bush should be drug out into the street and beaten for holding back the entire American people. Short history lesson: gas used to be cheap--real cheap--30 cents/gallon.
Sugar also was real cheap, but one year there was a shortage and the price went way up, but people didn't complain because they were just happy to just have the sugar.
The oil companies saw this and realized that was how they could get the gas price increases they had long wanted without generating mass protests--create a shortage.

They only created shortages where people were politically active--California and the west coast, northeast US. For people in the south, the only shortage was on the news.
People were so glad to get gas, they accepted paying more than double for it.
The increased gas prices made alternative energies more economically feasible and within a few years there were good developments in this direction.

The oil companies and OPEC then increased production just enough to keep the price low enough to make the developing alternative energy industries unprofitable.
This all happened in the 1970's. Imagine where alternative energy would be today if OPEC and the oil companies hadn't killed it?

Actually, the highest temperature EVER recorded in Baghdad was 123 F. Maybe that point is not a big deal...it's just that Snow lies and fudges and exagerates even when the bald truth would do equally as well. Of course, Snow isn't unique there. News outlets have sloppily claimed that summer highs in Iraq reach 140 degrees...but the highest temperature ever recorded anywhere on the face of the earth was 136, and that was in Libya -- not Iraq. The most mundane factoids get distorted in this war.
