  • The Maria to Robot ( false maria ) is a technical masterpiece, the forcefield rings that move up and down, were lights but the clever part is the repeat running of the negative through the camera until to create this effect . This film Metropolis made in 1926 and released in 1927, has very advanced special effects for the time including model and stop frame animation, the restored version explains some of this

  • @inzen: very nice, original try at German!

  • new fan of the man, thank you for posting ;-j

  • A real pity is that Al's singing was not captured on more film....video would have added an extra dimension to this mans life...cut short so tragically 69 years ago..

  • Perfect combination-seens almost synchronized-such a shame Al Bowlly died in an air raid-London 1941:-(

  • Ray Noble with Al Bowlly on the vocal, what an exciting time for those blessed to have seen them in person,WOW!!!!!!! Ilove you Al and Ray,you will never die for your music lives on always!!!

  • Just wonderful! There are no feelings like these in the songs nowadays.... it is a pity!

  • One of my favorite songs.I was.Born in the mid 1960's, I really thought this song came out in the '50's or early 60's.. Glad I know now! I love Ray Noble now.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG ITS GREAT THANK YOU

  • I have the Jacques Renard version from 1933 on US Vocalion of this absolutely beautiful song. Many people (outside of the UK) do not know that this song came from England, just like "East of the Sun, West of the Moon", and so many others that bacame famous in the US during the mid-30's. This song was also used in the American International Horror picture (filmed in the UK) "The Abominable Dr. Phibes" w/Vincent Price and Joseph Cotton.

  • Though both "Close Your Eyes" and "East of the Sun" were popular hits in England, they were written by Americans. "Close Your Eyes" was penned in New York by Chicago native Bernice Petkere, and "East of the Sun" was the work of a Cleveland native, Brooks Bowman, who was a 21 year old undergraduate student when he wrote it for a 1934 Princeton Triangle Club musical.

  • Thanks for setting that straight. I also love Petkere's equally haunting "Lullaby of the Leaves"

  • I remember Ray Nobles record of Turkish Delight. Oh once there were 2 dancing girls who danced around in guaze, They filled up all the cabarets they were enormous draws, The chief of police arrested them for showing too much zeal, He didn't mind the upper deck, but couldn't stand the keel.

  • Ray Noble ist the best! I became goose skin!

  • favolosa idea di usare Metropolis.

  • Very nice. It's good to see such great contributions to expand musical awareness.

  • what a voice!

  • Thank you so much for these contributions.

  • Yes, this is a magnificent arrangement, so sophisticated and rich. It is fascinating to compare it to the Lew Stone-Al Bowlly version recorded within days of this one. This version is far more dreamy - I could listen to it over and over again.

  • loris711 - I agree - Ray Noble's arrangements were beautiful - superior to Stone.

  • Forget the video, listen to this fbulous rendition. Al Bowlly was perhaps the greatest crooner of all time.

  • This is just an absolutely fabulous tune, dazzling arrangement, and great vocal. I just love this.
